Yes. It's eliminating shampoo, especially those with harsh detergents that strip natural oils from your hair.. It is quite effective. Basically you either co-wash (rinse hair with water, add conditioner and rinse again), cleanse your hair with ACV, you can use products like WEN, amongst other methods. This is especially good in drier climates and the winter season. It's also good if you color your hair, because you don't have shampoos stripping your hair of the color. All in all, you end up with healthier hair. If you use a lot of products that builds up, then occasionally you would want to use a sulphate-free shampoo, which is widely available on the market. Hope this helps.0

I do limited shampooing since I have curly hair. When my current shampoo runs out, I'd like to use the baking soda/ACV vinegar combo.0

No-Poo is a marketing slogan. Some people think it means NEVER use shampoo, but it was invented to sell a specific brand of shampoo. Lorraine Massey wrote about it in a book called Curly Girl, and she also happened to be selling her own expensive brand of "cleansing cream" called No-Poo. Really it was just a shampoo without sulfates.
The phrase has caught on as a general practice of using no detergents on your hair.
I limit shampoo as well, with my curly hair. It works very well in reducing frizz. I shampoo about once a week with BUrts Bees, which contains no sulfates.0 -
Yeah I have tried the No-poo method I was just afraid to say anything because lets face it people like to judge. I like the idea of not using all those chemicals but the month I have been trying it my scalp got very very dry and that part was not fun. And my hair seemed to be very staticy. Anyone have any tips!0

I have tried the baking soda in my conditioner to cleanse my hair, which felt heavenly, and then used an ACV rinse to close/seal the cuticle. I don't use this method all the time as it can be a bit harsh, the baking soda that is; ACV is fine.0 -
are you using anything at all on your hair? dry scalp and staticy hair aren't good.0

I don't ever you shampoo.
But then again, I don't need to  .0 -
I am doing the Baking soda/ apple cider vinigar combo and seem to be having a very dry scalp. Oily hair and dry scalp :grumble:0

What products were you using, as your hair shouldn't get too dry.0

I've been No-poo for about 13 years. But do go through a bit of shaving cream. ;-)0

You are not mixing the two together are you? How often are you doing this? I wouldn't recommend doing this more than once per week, if that often. You can use a daily conditioner in between washes using the co-wash method.0 -
then I suggest trying something else, since that doesn't seem to be working out.I am doing the Baking soda/ apple cider vinigar combo and seem to be having a very dry scalp. Oily hair and dry scalp :grumble:0

yeah, you need to quit. sorry!I usually do it maybe once a week but wasn't doing anything else till today cuz the itching just got to bad!0

I only shampoo my hair about once every four days. I like to push it to five if I can get there over a weekend. My hair is finally growing longer and it's stronger and looks healthier. When I do shampoo, I use a medium-priced sulfate-free shampoo.0

This is too often as all of that acid can be too harsh, especially not knowing the ratios. I would recommend not doing this for a while and seeing a dermatologist if the itching gets progressively worse. In the meantime, I would recommend that you brush your hair to loosen up the oil and debris, rinse with warm water for about five minutes, use a mild conditioner, and rinse. When and if you start using ACV again, then dilute it in at least a 1:6 ratio with water as a final rinse.0 -

Ive been using baking soda/vinegar rince as well. I scrub my scalp with the baking soda and run it down my hair too, then rinse with water and final rinse of diluted ACV (thats the important part diluted. I have been doing this for 6 months now. My hair has never been shiny until now and its very soft. I wont switch back. In the begining I added some drops of Tea Tree EO (to the vinegar/water rinse) and it got rid of my dandruff. Occassionally I will add Lavendar EO because I like the smell. Ive tried Lorraine's way and after 3 months and her products my hair looked 'okay' I think my curls look better now than then (when I wear it curly)0

I do it on and off! Mostly because I'm too lazy to buy shampoo. I've never made it past the oily-as-anything stage to when it actually starts behaving.
Edit, I only wash my hair every 3 or 4 days with the baking soda and ACV, and I usually do it in the sink since my hair is pretty short (I've chopped it off since my profile picture was taken). My roommate thought I had stopped bathing because she never saw me get up early and get in the shower any more -sigh-0 -
I love no-poo! Best thing I ever did for my hair!! I use actual no-poo (deva curl) and conditioner or just rinse with water and use conditioner...and I only do that about every three days or so. It can take a month or so for your hair/scalp to even out when first trying it so don't give up quickly if your hair looks worse before better! I will never go back to regular shampoo!! Another thing to keep in mind is when you are "no pooing" it is best not to use any products with silicone (or any "cones") in them as they build up on the hair. Most gels and other hair products (especially straightening products) have some kind of "cone" ingredient in them. Stay away from them!!0

I concur. I also thought it would be more entertaining.0 -

I've been doing co-washing for about a week. If you google it, you'll see that most people recommend using super cheap conditioners like suave or V05. I bought suave based solely on the scent. After the first wash, my hair's wave was way more defined than normal, but since I shower quickly in the morning before rushing to work, my frizz came back, so I bought some cheap aussie frizz cream & that seems to be doing the trick. I can go about a day & a half before my hair gets greasy, but I have always shampooed daily (please don't shame me...I know that's how I got myself into this situation).
I think the reason that I've been fairly greasy free is because the method I've been using involves scrubbing my scalp, before adding conditioner, while working the conditioner in & as it's rinsing out. I'm also drying with an old t-shirt & blotting/squeezing instead of rubbing the water out.
Another bonus with the cheap conditioner? I shave with it. Just don't forget to put some vinegar & baking soda down the shower drain regularly to prevent build up.0 -
It's pretty simple...if you want a shampoo that doesn't strip the natural oils from your hair, buy shampoos that does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate0

lol I thought this thread was something else entirely.
But to answer your question, I don't use the NO 'poo method. Under the advice of my hairdresser, I have actually only started shampooing 1-2x per week. It has actually helped my complexion and oilyness overall, not just on my head. My advice for those mornings when you look greasy and it's not shower day? Baby powder. dab it through your hair and then brush thoroughly so you don't look like a crazy person. Please note that this doesn't work that well if you have really dark/black hair. In that case, I would recommend a cheap mineral makeup in a deeper color from the drug store. I've used that myself and it works better than the baby powder, but... baby powder is so cheap
good luck!0
