Diet soda obviously isn't healthy for you, but it won't make you fat. I've noticed there are quite a few studies that correlate diet soda with obesity/weight gain but correlation does not imply causation. Overweight people are more likely to drink diet soda, and they may also think it makes it okay to eat more fatty foods since diet soda has zero calories. Weight loss is simply calories in / calories out, and diet soda will not directly cause you to gain fat.

    Excellent post.

I gave up fake sugar as much as I knowingly can. I drink a coke or similar prolly 6-12 times a year. Mostly rootbeer :) The fact that my dad reccommended using coke to clean off the corrosion off a car battery never sat right with me lol

every one of my 82 lost pounds was saturated in Coke Zero.

    And I'm still alive.

Drinking soda makes me a lab rat? Really? That's the most scaremongertastic claim I have ever heard. I even had to make up the word scaremongertastic to describe it!

I drank TWO sodas today in honor of this thread (and every other thread like it). I are a lab rat too. Weeeeeee!

I think I might have another just 'cause. I'll make it a coke zero. Double the fun? Aspartame AND sucrolose. Scary.

I won't drink soda at all..... Main reason... Put a cooked chicken breast in any soda and see how long it lasts.. if it can deteriorate any thing of the sort... why the hell would you put it in your body?

A man tried to sue coca cola for finding a mouse in his drink, couldn't be proven why?
Because the argument was, it would have been deteriorated by then.

I decided to test this out myself a while ago... A co workers daughter tested it.

Bye Bye Chicken breast in less than 3 hours... Don't you find that disgusting?

Don't believe everything people tell you over the watercooler! The Internet is RIGHT THERE, just google things and check if they are true before you spread nonsense about! Coca cola does NOT dissolve chicken in a matter of hours, that is ridiculous.

Here's an article from Time magazine about Diet Soda. It mentions a long-term (9 yr) study conducted at The University of Texas.

    http://healthland.time.com/2011/06/29/studies-why-diet-sodas-are-no-boon-to-dieters/
"What they found was that all participants saw their waistlines expand, but those who reported drinking diet soda had 70% greater increases in waistline growth than non-drinkers 9.5 years later. Among frequent drinkers — those who consumed two or more diet sodas a day — waistline growth was 500% greater than among non-drinkers. Researchers said their results were adjusted for other contributing factors like diabetes status, leisure-time physical activity level and age."

Interesting they don't mention adjusting it for caloric intake.:ohwell:

Wow, really people. Let me spell it out. Do your own research on aspartame poisoning. Good Lord. Now I want a diet coke.
    Just kidding.

I just don't go near soda at all.
For the life of me I don't understand why someone who is on a diet wanting to drop weight and get healthy would subject their body to that filth.
There are so many other ways to treat yourself, why a can of bubbly soda?

How about this...is this enough for you?

Dr. H.J. Roberts, diabetic specialist and world expert on aspartame poisoning, has also written a book entitled "DEFENSE AGAINST ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE." Dr. Roberts tells how ASPARTAME POISONING is escalating Alzheimer's Disease, and indeed it is. As the hospice nurse told me, women are being admitted at 30 years of age with Alzheimer's Disease.

Yeah... no. There is ZERO scientific evidence supporting Dr. Roberts' claim. Alzheimer's disease is scary enough. Please don't go spreading information that is NOT SUPPORTED by science. Seriously. Neuron cell death is my thing. Alzheimer's disease is my thing. I get exceedingly grumpy when people make claims that aren't supported by science and I get extra exceedingly grumpy with cherries on top when they start making claims about something I pour my heart into researching.

Go to http://www.alzforum.org/ or http://www.alz.org/ if you want to know the truth about Alzheimer's Disease.

Truth be told there isn't enough clinical data to support the information on that article. I work with the international database of clinical studies on a regular basis and these studies they "refer" to simply are not published. If the article is not published its subject to a little dispute to say the least.

However that being said their is plenty of clinical data showing that aspartame is indeed not very good for you. I've always preferred the sucralose or acesulfame potassium drinks over aspartame. The best option currently is actually stevia, its a natural sweetener so doesn't go unrecognized by the liver and is most certainly better then aspartame. Stevia is gradually gaining popularity even though I'll be the first to say it does have a bit of an aftertaste I could do without. Even coca cola is working on a stevia based diet coke. Problem is stevia is not remotely near as cost effective as aspartame, so the coke and pepsi corp of the world return to aspartame but be assured eventually aspartame will be banned from foods.

Only reason it hasn't is those companies donate handsomely to political parties campaign funds. Just buying time until they figure out a cost effective alternative. Despite seeing the studies myself I still indulge in a coke zero here and there... but with anything in life moderation is key. I mean I can also show you a statistic that shows 9 people a year die from drinking too much water, doesn't mean water will kill you but technically it could in an abnormally high amount.

Artificial sweeteners are certainly not the best thing for you but within reason you shouldn't have any ill effects, I still avoid aspartame whenever possible.

I don't know about all that but don't drink diet sodas.
These companies lace these drinks with too many chemicals, but I can't actually point to anything definitive.
It's just a feeling I get that I am drinking poison.
So, when I eat my Big Mac, I just drink either fresh tea or pure water with some lemon.

Guess that makes me a hypocrite...:smokin: - like the runner who smokes!

The acid in your stomach is much stronger than any soda.

You can use Coke to get rid of lime scale....
that's pretty scary. although honestly, your stomach acid is just as bad...

For me, diet pop is a major trigger. Leads me down roads I don't want to go on anymore...so I don't drink it. But I don't judge those who do!

Sometimes I want something sweet and bubbly to wash down that bacon cheeseburger. Seriously. Water just doesn't cut it all the time.

What I really don't understand are people who say they can't taste a difference between diet pepsi and diet coke. Freaks me out.

I know, right? Diet Pepsi is nasty.

This made me laugh out loud. Thanks for that. I'm drinking my icy cold diet coke in your honor tonight.

I think like anything that may not be very good for you, but sure does taste good, should be consumed in moderation. Should we stop? More then likely...but how grey and dull would meals be if we only ate things we didn't care for or like. Better to make it a sometimes thing...that way it tastes even better.

Now for people who have troubles with 'only one' that is a different story...if it is like crack to you, prolly shouldn't do it. LOL.
