Vitamin D Deficiency

My doctor told me that all my levels are within normal limits, except I have Vitamin D deficiency. I thought, "Even though I'm eating better? Even though I adore fish and certain dairy? Even with a more balanced and reasonable diet? Even though I live in the South, like the outdoors, and I'm not sensitive to the sun?" So I did some research and it turns out that my biggest risk factor for Vitamin D deficiency is being obese. Huh, who knew?? My fat cells deplete the release of Vitamin D in my blood, which puts me at risk for other drama.

Most dark skin races have problems with Vitamin D. Basically you get Vitamin D from the sun, your skin absorbs it. As you body gets more and more your skin darkens to block portions of that Vitamin D. Seeing as you appear to be black it makes sense that you have a vitamin D shortage since you've had darker skin your whole life.
You could either A spend more time in the sun (nude even), or take Vitamin D supplements.0 -
That reminds me, I need to get my Vit D3. Thanks. :flowerforyou:0

I have struggled with VIT D deficiency for years, it caused my hair to fall out and my energy to be at 0. I make sure I get sub exposure now even when it is very cold and from there I drink a lot of Kefir and that seems to help. Good luck!0

I was deficient in Vitamin D last year and a lot of other vitamins the year before that, I am anemic too all because of food allergies , I take Vitamin D and try to get some sun (without burning to ashes) during the day.0

I would go for regular check ups with my family doctor and I believe he never checked my Vitamin D levels because he always said I was fine - I went to a womens clinic in December and she gave me a wellness exam - I was extremely deficient. The doctor told me that normal range is 30...I was at 7 - WTH! I couldn't believe it soooo, she prescribed me a weekly 50,000 unit dosage of Vitamin D and asked me to take Calcium supplements for better absorbtion of the Vitamin D...I'm due for a check up in 5 months0

I have been Vitamin D deficient for at least the last 2 years that I know of it could be longer just never had it checked before. My doctor put me on a prescription strength of Vitamin D to help get to normal levels but it only helps for a while then I get back below normal. I take a daily over the counter Vitamin D to help keep my Vitamin D up. Need to go get tested again to see if it is working. I know in the summer I get a lot of natural Vitamin D from the sun, but in the winter it is hard. My doctor has told me that being Vitamin D deficient can affect losing weight. I think everyone should go get theirs checked.0

Thank you for posting that-I just started my diet 3 weeks ago and really haven't lost any weight-and i have a preexisting Vit D deficiency. You have inspired me to start taking my injections of Vit D again! Thank you!0

Yeah, I read the bit about darker skinned people being more prone to Vit D deficiency also. Makes sense. I was just puzzled because I've been Black my whole life and was never told I was deficient. He gave me a Rx for weekly supplements. But then I wondered about what my levels would be when the prescription was empty. Then what? Seeing as how I'll still be Black in 6 more weeks (I HOPE), what changes to make then?0
