SALTY!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought some bacon at a local farmers market. I cooked a few pieces today and it is soooooooo salty that I almost can't stand to eat it. I can barely taste bacon at all. All I taste is SALT! I can even see the salt on it after it's cooked. I realize that bacon should be a little salty, but this is ridiculous. It's so gross and I love bacon, so it's not me.

I may just be out of luck here, but is there any way to cook it or prepare it so that it's not so salty? I did not add any salt to it.... I guess it was just cured in salt.

I can't eat bacon any more because of the salt levels.. Have you tried turkey bacon, it's pretty good and less salty than regular bacon.

You could boil it and most of the salt will come out in the water and then pan fry it or however you normally cook it.

Try bacon without nitrates added in, tends to be less salty and better for you :)

Yes, this was going to be my suggestion too. Like you sometimes need to do to make country ham or salt pork edible.

Bacon is cured pork. Curing is a process of adding salt to preserve it. If you are trying to avoid sodium, avoid bacon.

Yep. This will work. Just don't do it too long, or you'll lose all the salt/flavor.

You're gonna call me nuts, but one time I tried to flavor some bacon, with like apple juice/grape juice....long story...

But it took the saltyness away...

PS - soaking it in apple juice wasn't all that bad, took some of the smoky flavor away tho

That sucks! I would suggest freezing it and using it in soups / beans from here on out. You can use the salt from the bacon and add less salt to those dishes...

At least it wont go to waste

I have cured and smoked my own bacon and ham. Soaking bacon in water is the process that I use after curing, in order to cut down on the salt and nitrate content. There is no need to boil it. I would not soak it any longer than one half hour, or you risk removing all the salt content. As for the smoke flavor, your guess is as good as mine; I've never soaked bacon after smoking?

Agree. If I'm going to have bacon, it's going to be real bacon.
