Avocados?

Hi guys,

Was wondering how everyone felt about avocados... I've gotten into the habbit of eating a medium-sized hard-boiled egg and a half avocado for breakfast almost every day...
Does anyone else include them regularly in their menu? How's that going for you?
I've just started last week so everything's still a bit new...

Thank you!

I have avocados maybe once a week. They are a little calorie dense, but the fat they have is healthy fat. I'd say as long as you're staying within your calorie goal, then go for it. They're delicious!

Just remember that avocado has a lot of fat it in. BUT it IS healthy fat. :) I love avocado. I eat it almost everyday too. my fav recipe is:

    1 can of chickpeas
    1 avocado sliced
    1 tomato sliced
    1/4 cup of almonds
a couple tablespoons of balsamic vinegar.

makes for a really nice salad. :)

I use them in Salads all the time.
You have to be careful not to eat them too much.
They are a healthy fat but they are still a fat.

Yes, they are fantastic! I had half of one this AM on a slice of Ezekiel bread, or I mash them into avocado dip with tomatoes, a little cheese, and a dash of lemon juice. So good!!

I have a 100 Calorie pack of the Eat Wholly Guacamole almost everyday. It has 3 ingredients (all natural if I remember correct) it has replaced mayo and salad dressing in my meals.

    I like them on toast, in soups,on salads, with a spoon,in a dip with a blue chip...lol
I buy several and put in veggie bin in the fridge, and pull one out at a time to soften to my desire.
  • I have avocado almost every day! As a spread in my sandwiches/wraps/cruskits or chopped up into my salads... I love it!

If you like them and they fit into your calorie goal I would say have it as often as you like! I figure since they're in the fruit & veg section they are better for me than plenty of other things - they're fresh & unprocessed!! =D
  • I love avocados! I eat them all the time and can usually get them comped at Walmart for 2/$1.

I eat them regularly, I can actually see the difference they make to my skin when I can't get them! Plus they have a good wack of fibre. What a great little package!

That is not enough protein for a meal. And for the rest of the day you still have to watch your fat content. Avocado is good fat but its still fat & calories. You are eating more Fat that protein. Try eating more egg whites with your Avocado

I have avocado and light mozzarella salad once a week, I have it with rocket, tomatoes, cucumber and a bit of Italian dressing, yummy, the only thing that would make it better would be if it was served with crusty bread and butter.
  • Good Question,
Avocado's are such a wonderful source of good fats. I use them to replace chocolate milk after my runs, and use them instead of mayo on sandwiches. Just because it is a good fats does not mean that it is not a fat, it is. But it does not have any saturated fats the way milk and mayo do. Last year I used them to replace the mayo on sandwiches and I feel it helped me lose 30 lbs and lesson my dependance on needing mayo to make the sandwich taste good.
    Good Luck

i love avocados......as everyone has said, they are loaded with good fat.....as long as your diet is not full of other fats you should be good....
i made a recipe tonight that includes avocados

    southwest black bean salad
1 can of black beans, rinsed and drained
    1 tomato, chopped
    1 scallion chopped
    1/4 red onion, chopped
    1 lime-juice
    salt and pepper
    1 hass avocado, diced
    1 can of corn, drained
    3 tbsp olive oil
    cilantro

combine beans, tomato, onions, scallion, corn, , salt and pepper, juice of lime, olive oil together....mix well, cover and marinate in fridge for 30 min. add avocado and cilantro right before serving....great with low carb wheat tortillas or on romaine lettuce as a wrap.....

Have you tried them grilled or pan fried? Get an avocado that it still a bit hard and grill them or pan fry. They go a bit crunchy on the out side and spectacularly creamy and awesome on the inside. (don't peel them either, it helps keep the shape. Yummy.

My little guilty treat once in a while: an avocado cut in halves and in the hollow left by the pit I put some "light" italian dressing. YUM!

Avocados are wonderful, I just finished eating 1/2 of one. Just have to watch the fat, but it is a good fat. Thanks for the recipes and the idea of replacing mayo with them. I've never tried that and I will know.

They are a huge part of my diet .. always have them in my Sushi !

Fact : " Avocados provide nearly 20 essential nutrients, including fiber, potassium, Vitamin E, B-vitamins and folic acid. They also act as a "nutrient booster" by enabling the body to absorb more fat-soluble nutrients, such as alpha and beta-carotene and lutein, in foods that are eaten with the fruit. "

Like every other " good fat " ... always eat in moderation ! :)
  • It's one of the best EFA's you can have. Have you ever heard of the author Natalie Rose? She writes a lot of books about Raw Food. I used to have her book Detox for Women: An All New Approach for a Sleek Body and Radiant Health in 4 Weeks. She had salad dressing (or topping) recipes using avocados as the base. Of course you eat salad daily and it's all good. I really miss that book. Now, if only the price of avacodo's would go down!
