You wouldn't eat raw chicken fresh out of the package, so you gotta look at tofu the same way.
I've had my best success with tofu if I press the moisture out, freeze it, thaw it and marinate it, usually in soy sauce, ginger and lime juice. Then I slice it up and stir fry it with lots of veggies! The freezing gives it a great chewy, toothsome texture.
If you're not into that, it's also tasty if you cut it up, bread the pieces, and bake them as nuggets!

I'm not a fan of the spongey stuff - and check the label because I think it's often deep fried to get that texture.
I like the firm tofu best - cut it into cubes or rectangles and marinate it then pan fry or oven bake it and use it with salads or other dishes like you would grilled chicken.
I've used the soft tofu a few times in smoothies and I used to have a great baked artichoke dip made with soft tofu - yum!
If you want to try it out, then look for some recipes that sound good and experiment.
If you just don't like it - then eat something else, there is no tofu police forcing you to eat it!
To Robo - yes, the soft kind is pretty much like egg white, with not much taste. Mostly harmless, I think!0 -
i dont understand why anyone eats the stuff gross!!!!! not to mention its actually not all that good for you its basically a filler if genetically processed crap
Um, I don't know what tofu you're eating, but mine is soy beans, water, and calcium. It's also made of non-GMO soy beans. Some of us eat it because we need the protein and calcium (because we don't eat meat or dairy).You wouldn't eat raw chicken fresh out of the package, so you gotta look at tofu the same way.

It is so gross to me and I am a vegetarian. I wish I could help you.. I even went to a noodle restaurant where it was made in a delicious pasta and I had to pick it out! lmso. P.S. No to the egg white because I love egg whites and it is not the same to me.0

I love tofu and there's loads you can do with it. I currently put a square in with my smoothies, but you can stir fry, roast, bake and more - it can even be scrambled!0

Mind you, I'm not a vegetarian or vegan, and I care surprisingly little about the treatment my food receives. Still, I love tofu.
The main thing people do wrong with tofu is use it to replace meat. On its own, it's brilliant in soups and stews and you can blend it with fruit for quite tasty, high-nutrient foodthings. Protein levels are fairly high, if you're willing spend more than ten minutes on your food you can make it absolutely delicious and awesome. Deepfried, stir-fried, sautéd or baked it makes a great addition to simple foods such as salads and pastas.
I personally don't understand omnivores' problems with tofu, especially the kind that instruct others to re-view their dietary beliefs due to their own sensory issues.
Sadly, I don't have any recipes to share. Tofu's surprisingly hard to come by here.0 -
Not gross...can do lots with it. I have it a few times a week
1. I had it for dinner about ten minutes ago, stir fried with chilli garlic coriander spring onions soy and sesame oil. yummy!
2. Also my vegan lover made for me mushrooms filled with mashed pumkin and soft tofu belnded together with cummin and nutmeg. it was quite a revelation!0 -
Tofu is awesome! the easiest thing to make is scrambled tofu.--tumeric and tofu in a skillet. boom. tastes/looks like eggs. add some nutritional yeast and seasonings (such as salt & pepper & sriracha)
why not just eat eggs????

Its not that bad. Before you cook it be sure to press it well. The more water you get out the more flavor it will pick up. Baking it crispy with seasonings is a good way to start trying it.0

I love tofu. I usually fry it up with some garlic and onions, plus spices and put it over rice or quinoa with some tomatoes, spinach and peppers. I add a little bit of cheese because I love cheese. It gives me the protein I need, plus I just love the flavor it has. To each their own I say.0

replace the meat in your chili recipe with cubed firm tofu
also, i'm surprised more people don't google when they are looking for recipes... there are thousands of recipes for every food type imaginable if you just take a minute to look for them0 -

My new favorite Chinese food place will replace any of the meat in their recipes with tofu. I have had General Tso's tofu (amazing!) and tofu and broccoli (in the sauce they use for beef and broccoli). Both were super yummy. I think they breaded and seared the tofu before putting it in the mix.0

I got bored of reading all the replies, so i'm not sure if anyone has already said this.
You need to DRAIN IT, and cook it right. This is the KEY to getting tofu to taste amazing.
You need a block of firm tofu. If you have time to drain it overnight, that's best. you can leave it draining for as little as 30 minutes though if you're in a rush.
- place the block in between some bounty/kitchen towels
- place something heavy on top, like a big book or something
-in the morning, get rid of the cloths which'll be really wet.. slice the tofu however you'd like it. i like it best in medium sized chunks.
-fry in fry light oil, and season with salt and pepper, or whatever you like, really.
amazing in stir fries and chinese soups etc. you'll grow to like it, if it's cooked right it tastes wicked. hope this helps.
you can also use silken tofu in smoothies, etc. i made a pumpkin pie in october which was incredible. i'm vegan so i used raw pumpkin, mixed with silken tofu, all blended up in a food processor.
also, with the firm tofu, i make 'scrambled egg'. for this, drain as normal, then once it's dry, crumble into different sized pieces- some medium sized, some small, to resemble scrambled egg. start frying up in a pan, add a bit of salt and pepper, and a tiny weeny bit of turmeric and cumin. amaaaaazing with spring onion and grated carrot too, trust me. if you're not vegan you probably won't bother with this, but it's a wicked alternative to egg if you eat dairy free.0 -
You have to cook it with other things that are naturally flavorful. I love it sauteed with some purple onion and BBQ sauce, and served on top of rice.0

I have to admit, when I found out I had a soy allergy, I was secretly a little bit thrilled because it meant I would never again be goaded into eating tofu.
I have lots of vegetarian friends who were all convinced that I didn't like tofu because no one ever prepared it properly for me. No matter how much I said I didn't like it, my claims of 'I don't care for tofu' always fell on deaf ears. I do not like it stir fried, in soups, or even silken tofu turned into mousse or cheesecake. Just no!
Now I get to say 'I simply couldn't... I'm allergic'. :-)0 -

My son is a vegan and he has showed me how to cook with tofu and it is great . I make areally good cheesecake with it. Also putting it in your smoothee also gives you your prorein.0

I watched Hungry Girl's Lisa Lillien swapping out a lot of noodle recipes with Tofu noodles ( She endorses House Foods Tofu Shirataki Noodles)
I tried them- tofu has intrigued me but I also had NO idea how to prepare it
Just gotta say, it didn't appeal to me personally,
but it's a great low cal swap if you want to try that too.
Found it @ our local Giant Eagle Store, sure you can google House Foods Tofu Shirataki Noodles and
see what stores in your area might carry it.0 -
i will admit, i am a vegetarian and am not a huge fan of tofu. it has to be cooked right and i seem to be really crap at cooking it well. look for recipes on different vegetarian/vegan websites and you'll find a lot of good recipes. also, use a strong sauce and the tofu will take that flavor. i love it in stir fry.0
