I had a cause. My mother is a 3 time breast cancer survivor & she's a hero. So I wanted to show her I support her & be her hero by completing a breast cancer awareness 5K in her honor. I signed up & having a goal forced me to train. You should have seen her face when I ran across that finish line. I'll NEVER forget it. I'll never forget the tears in her eyes. She was so proud. I've promised her every year I'll complete it for her now. That's what keeps me running. Everyone's motivation is different but no matter what it is for you, find it & go after it. You can do it. Try Couch To 5K program on iTunes. It helped me a lot. Good luck!

That seems so backwards to me! :) I'd imagine that staring at the same wall for 30-40 minutes would just get dreary!

My motivation in running is because I'm training for a half-marathon and a full marathon. But without that, the scenery and the challenges of uneven ground keep me going

I get spurts of times when I want to run then I work up my endurance to run and after a couple of weeks of running I get bored
I dont know if Its the treadmill or what.
I tried to run around my neighborhood but for the whole run I was paranoid about getting ran over.

I get some good tunes on the player and go to a park or a track where there are others running. My competative side comes out when there are other people around and I always want to see if I can keep up with this person...or out run that person...etc etc.

running outside is far better than running on the treadmil, I do get kind of bored doing that!

Run facing traffic and this won't be an issue. Neighborhoods should have 25 MPH speed limits and there's always the sidewalk to dive onto if something goes wrong. I run around my neighborhood several times per week and have never had an issue with cars. It's the dogs, coyotes and javelina I worry about.

If you want real motivation to run than sign up for a race, any distance really. Once you have a monetary interest in the matter your motivation changes. I had never run over 3 miles in my life when a buddy called my bluff on signing up for a sprint triathlon. That race was August of 2010. In a little over a year I went from never running to loving it. Running for 2-2.5 hours tomorrow morning at 5 AM because I want to, and it's on my training plan, but mostly because I like to.

Although I am signed up to run a half-marathon, I too hate running but like Missikay say, it feels so good when you finish, it is worth it.

My advice: Have a goal. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/post/new/475814-motivation-to-run#

Sign up for a 5k, in like 12 weeks (not much more time than that), and like our other friend posted, see if you can find one that is 'right' for you. You must actually sign up and pay the race money or you will never do. Then, you have a few program choices:

    - find an online training schedule and fit it to your race schedule, then train on the treadmill or map out safe distances around you to meet your daily and weekly run goals
good online 5k programs include Jeff Galloway, Nike Training, Self Magazine, C25k, etc.

    - Train with a local group like Team and Training or look up favorite local Running Shoe Store, they always have training groups. They may cost a bit of money, but what they can teach you will last a life time.

Lastly, if you can find a friend to run with.. Or run/walk to start..

and, if you want, friend me. I have done about 50 races, at all sizes, points in my life. Some I walked, some I carried small children, some I peed and vomited thru (I was pregnant), and some I really, really, really enjoyed!
I will do my best to be a friend and motivator!

Regardless of what you choose, I wish you the best of luck!

Here is a list of all the reasons I like to run:

    - It gives me ME time
    - I get to think about things while I run, sometimes it's almost like meditating.
    - It's a great workout
    - It gets me out in the community and outdoors
    - I like the way it shapes my body
    - It makes me healthy
    - I'm a happier person when I do it
    - I like the challenge of pushing through the hard moments of running (and there are PLENTY of those)
    - I like knowing all of the miles that have passed beneath my feet
    - I love getting ready for races and performing
    - I love being a part of the running community (runners are fantastic!)
    - I love an excuse to eat carbs

Running is painful most of the time, but you learn to befriend that pain. It forces you to be mentally stronger, to push yourself each time you want to quit. It teaches you what your limits are.

That's what keeps me running day after day.

funny, we must have posted nearly the same time.. nicely stated and congrats to you for your new 'hobby'... or should I say obsession? And yes, my first race cost about $15 but man, since I had cash out there, I just couldn't not do it... even if I just walked it!

0h, one more quick thought.. if you can... buy yourself some running shoes from a running store. They will help you pick a style for the way you run... then, you will also not be able to stand not trying them out!

    Then don't run.
Exercise should be fun; find what you enjoy. I think exercise became torture when we grew up and stopped playing.
I just don't do certain exercises that are hell.
Indoor cardio like the treadmill - "dreadmil" or stationary bike, elliptical....
I'd rather be tied and beaten in the town square.

No, for me it's either fun, or count me OUT!

I do a lot of weird things for cardio like military march, boxing type training,
dancing, floor rolls, squat thrust intervals and the good ole jumping jack while watching MMA.
And I jog, swim, play tennis, fast walk and bike.

Lost 70lbs and nearly 20% body fat - it works for me.

I hated running until I found a running partner. I went from running a totally demoralizing 1.5 miles around a 1/4 mile track (what used to be the AF standard) to a nice leisurely 6.5 mile jog around the flightline. When I reached that, I had no problems enjoying squadron PT and sports day 5K fun runs.

I have what I like to call "Exercise ADD". I get bored so easily with all workouts, running is the only thing that I have been able to keep consistant with. The key for me is to have a race or two planned like the other posters suggested. I started C25K in October and registered for a race in December. Now I am training for a 10K and I have 5 more races planned over the next few months.

I think once you get started, you will fall in love with it!

If you don't like running, then don't!

For me, I loved just running but couldn't maintain and got frustrated, but finally found the c25k program and off I went!

I still have days that I don't want to go outside (dreary, cold) but I know I'll love it when I'm out there. I get to daydream or zone while listening to music (yes it's low enough for me to hear cars and what not and I do pay attention to my surroundings).

It really feels good the first time you reach a milestone, like running for an hour straight! That was cool!

^^^This! If you don't enjoy it, don't do it. I'm not a big fan of running but I am doing it now because I have set myself a goal of completing a half marathon later this year. For me personally the idea of reaching a goal that had seemed so unattainable is so motivating it gets me over my heh feeling towards running.

Most of the time though, I do stuff I enjoy, our group activities at the gym keep things interesting and its new each day and it gets a little competetive at times too... I like that! ;P

it's the opposite for me, I find I get bored on the elliptical ; so I go running for a change of scenery.

I don't understand, why do you need to start? If you don't like something don't do it. That's why I don't do the ellip. or the treadmill, because I HATE them. I love running outside, that's my thing, but I can't imagine why you'd force yourself to do something you hate.

Same!! I trained for my half-marathon while raising money for blood cancers. My mom is a survivor, a good friend my age got diagnosed right before I started training... Then, unexpectedly, I lost my aunt to blood cancer a few weeks before my race.

Combining fitness with philanthropy really made the experience so much more meaningful. It also REALLY made me feel grateful to have a body that allows me to run, when so many are fighting diseases and would do so much to have low exercise motivation be their biggest physical problem. Now, I want to keep running to honor the physical health I am SO LUCKY to enjoy.

But, in general, I've also come to love running for the special ME time I get, the sense of accomplishment you get from setting a new "first," and from meeting other people who like to run. Runners are interesting, focused people, and those who do so for charity are extra special IMHO :)

I downloaded it on my iphone.... im going to start monday!!! Thanks..this is all i needed was mainly a guide..I am very ambitious and i think all i need is a guideline to go by instead of just going out and running, having a running workout like couch to 5k will help me, because i have certain task to complete each day!!

  • - I love an excuse to eat carbs

That too!!! Last Sunday I ate something like 2600+ calories AND STILL HAD A DAILY DEFICIT. Gotta love distance running :)

Run slowly, smile at everyone you go past, listen to a good book or fun music and the minutes rush past!

Wrong, in my opinion. There are certain things that you need to do, even though you may not like them. For example, your job if you don't have another option right now. Running is not one of those things. If you don't enjoy your workout, you won't stick with it!

Not exactly. As I said I hated running. Mostly because I was fat and it was freaking hard. I FORCED myself to do it so I didn't embarrass myself in a race I signed up for. Now running is my tranquility, it's relaxing, it's fun, it's competition with myself and others, it's where I find myself centered. If I had said "I hate this, I quit" I never would have found a great joy in my life.
