Oddly, my best gift was also my worst. It was worst before best. Before we were married (I think it was our second Christmas together) my husband bought me a rock tumbler, polishing grit and a bag of rocks. Now, I love rocks and I had mentioned (in a very offhand manner) that I had always wanted a rock tumbler (as a kid). It seemed (at the time) an odd, yet sweetly thoughtful gift and I tumbled a load or two of rocks - discovered, to my dismay, that it takes time to polish rocks - and it's messy, and noisy (we lived in an appointment and the swish, swish, swish eventually got to me even though it was stashed in a closet. It was eventually banished to a storage bin somewhere.
Fast forward 19 years, to about a year and a half ago, I started making chainmaille jewelry. Jewelry (particularly chainmaille) improves with a good tumble (don't we all) and I was lamenting my stupidity in losing my tumbler. Up steps my husband with a dirty old cardboard box - with bags of rough rocks, tumbler, etc. YES. It works perfectly, and is absolutely what I needed. It only took me close to 20 years to appreciate.0 -

There are lots of gifts that I've gotten that I love, the birdhouse my son painted for me when he was 5 is still on my windowsill. But I think my favorite thing ever was when my husband (boyfriend of only a few months at the time) took me to California. Although I had traveled as a kid, I never got to travel during my first marriage so this vacation was amazing to me. We had so much fun and got to stay a whole week and visited San Francisco, San Jose, Monterey Bay and a long drive along the coast. I've framed pictures we took there. It was the best vacation I'd ever had and I'd love to go back again. Since then we've been to Jamaica and Mexico and other states, but California was still the best.0

i'd seen a purse at an art gallery in Kansas City when the hubs and i were there visiting. i fell in love. was way too expensive though, so i didn't get it. 6 months later, at my bday, the hubs had bought it for me! It's still my fave, and i've used it for 8 years now!0

my best christmas present was on christmas day of 05 after i come home from the dog park (i had left my cell home by accident, but we were only 3 blocks away) and my daughter told me she was pregnant with my grandson (not that we knew he was a boy yet, she was only 3wks along). but i called up EVERYBODY from old friends to new. in fact if i could have afforded it, i probably would have put up a billboard saying, "my baby is having a baby!"
the best birthday gift i ever had was belated, but it was my grandson coming a month after my birthday in august of 06. that's MY tugar pie and my spoiled brat!!!0 -
A donation to The Human Fund in my name.
hope you didn't write that off on your taxes, otherwise i hope you're prepared for an audit.
i love watches and one day, no special occasion, an ex bought me a gorgeous dkny watch with big dkny letters on the band. the time was in the letter d, which was the first letter of his nick name. that way, every time i look at the time, the letter d would remind me of him. very sweet.0 -
I would have to say I'm not surprised often. So, the first one was my trip to Cali when my grandmother bought me tickets to see my brother when I graduated high school she surprised me with at my graduation party. But most recently this Christmas when I was surprised with not one but TWO beautiful slightly more expensive jewelery items I LOVED. Which is a big deal to me because I generally hate expensive jewelery and I would SO not spend that kind of money on something so silly, but these two were exceptional.0
