How many homebrewers are here and incorporating their delicious fermented beverages while working towards being fit? I've been a homebrewer for 10 years, and it's a struggle to fit in that high calorie drink in sometimes. This site is awesome to calculate the calories in your homewbrew! http://www.mrgoodbeer.com/carb-cal.shtml

I know I've mentioned to you recently, I cut out homebrewing because 5gal of beer is just too dangerous to have around the house. That and I hate bottling. After connecting with so many homebrewers that are also in to being fit, I've really been itching to get back to it... so, there is a corny in my future and I will be making homebrew my b!tch.

Switch to kegging. It's just one giant bottle to clean and sterilize instead of 54 of them.
  • My husband (mrbluepie) got a few of those kits to make beer, but we haven't gotten a chance to try it again. He does make his own limoncello every fall for the holidays and I'm looking to make mead. Maybe we'll give homebrewing another go though :)

    Exactly!

Oh, and then I had a batch that got a nasty infection - turned my Alt into a sour!! Scary part was it was a damn tasty sour. Beer is the only time a food can get infected and still be awesome. Well I mean, kind of awesome. My homebrew club buddies speculated I somehow got a bit of Brett from the air, and they're trying as we speak to get a good clone to make some non-infected sours.

Moral of the story - beer infection also made me so paranoid to try another batch. All that time kinda wasted. I just need to stop *****footing around and start brewing again.

I have made a few batches over the past 3 years, but since I moved into my new house I have not. I am working at getting my basement cleaned out, then set up to become my brewing centre in one area and exercise room in another, storage in the third, and workshop in the furnace room.

I plan on making beer and wine when I get it up and running. I am contemplating going with a keg system and will get some growlers to transport it if I am going somewhere other than my place.

My brother had a freind over and asked him "What king of beer do you like?" and I will never forget the reply "An open one."

I haven't done homebrewing too much in the past couple of years but was thinking of doing it again soon. It's fun, it's much cheaper & often tastes way better. I don't do it from scratch, but from kits. I have not given up beer as part of my weight loss/health journey & don't really intend to. I've cut back on it but i figure i've chopped out plenty of other things that i enjoy already. The way i balance it is if i drink it, i have to burn off at least that many calories during exercise. Obviously this doesn't negate drinking it, but hey, it's something.

There's a nice oatmeal stout brewer's wort kit calling my name from the u-brew store down the road. For 30 bucks, you can't go wrong.

Now...i do have about 30 bottles of home made Amarone aging in the basement...and it's been almost a year (i do the wine at the store so as not to interfere with the beer making at home).

our garage used to have gym equipment.

now it has 3 refrigerators, tons of kegs and burners, an insulated fermenting box and ... well, you get the idea.

Wow, you guys are hard core. I also live almost across the street from a great local micro brewer as well, so I tend to go there quite a bit for some tasty brews.

I live in Denver. I sneeze and end up in a microbrewery.

The Oktoberfest we brewed needs to go into the keg. Should have gone last night, but.....

Raspberry porter is still in secondary for a few more days.

Normally, we have a pretty good rotation going, but both of our kegs blew at once.

Yeah my brewery has 3 burners, 3 15 gallon kettles (one hot liquor tank, mash/lauter tun, and kettle), equipped with a counter chiller that has ice water pumping through at 25 gal/min. Cools the wort from 212 degrees to 60 degrees as fast as it flows through. I have a pump that pumps the wort from the boiling kettle about 20 feet to the fridge into my 14.5 gal. conical fermenter. Yeah, I got carried away with it :)

Just getting into homebrewing, but I'm intent on keeping booze as a regular (reasonable) part of my routine--so it's nice to see a thread like this one! I'm posting in part just to be able to find other beer lovers later on.

I also work part time in a (spirits) distillery, which means frequent opportunities to sample great stuff. I'm more than happy to get out and move around more in order to save some room for beer, whiskey, wine, or whatever. Plus, the exercise works up a good thirst.

This might count as a travesty to beer purists, but this past weekend I was at an event with beer "cocktails" including a dessert one consisting of porter, sarsaparilla, and a float of heavy cream. Man, that hit the spot on a warm afternoon.

I love beer cocktails!!! Recently had a super herb-y belgian white with Absinthe and some other earthy liquors. SO GOOD. The porter/sasparilla/cream sounds amazing.

Thanks so much for that link!
I have a keg which should be ready for sampling in the next few weeks (brewed ready for the rugby world cup)- could be dangerous! I think I might have to switch to bottling, because otherwise the temptation to go back to the keg for another glass is too great- while I could store the bottles out of temptation (maybe!).
I need to figure a way to work beer into a healthy sustainable way of life, given thats its my major vice and I am plainly not going to stay off it forever- but being a 5'2" girly with a bmr of 1200 that could be tricky.

I'm 5'3" and sit at a desk all day.. and I LOVE BEER. I have found that with plenty of exercise I can fit a decent amount of beer in my week. It's not an everyday thing any more, but it's still there.

Exactly! Plus, what's better after a long run (or whatever exercise) than a cold beer???
  • I been brewing for about 10 years. My biggest problem is that I make it faster then I drink it. I have a closet full of beer. Most of it is heavy stuff, I got into barley wines (up to 24% ABV) for a while, and now they are ageing nicely. They really mellow out between 3 to 5 years. I also have an IBA, IPA and English bitter stowed away. Maybe I should throw a party once my weight is off.
  • hi i started brewing about 3 months ago. i use the coopers kits and they are really easy to use. i brewed the lager that came with the kit but i like my ales . started to drink my second batch real ale kit about 5% tastes really good used brewing sugar and dry malt . i am going to try a german bock next . need some friends add me:drinker:

It is funny that you say that! My daughters' ran in the Chicago marathon and when they crossed the finish line they handed them a glass of beer!
We used to brew beer but have switched to wine. It is hard for me to stay on track sometimes with so much good wine in the house so I have started using a measuring cup and measuring every ounce I drink and tracking it. I know now that I was under-estimating, a LOT! I am keeping better track and finally starting to lose again!
