Hi friends.
I am brand new to myfitnesspal but not new to the world of weight loss. Seven years ago I dropped over 60 pounds. Since that time, weight has slowly creeped back on and I'm now 15 pounds heavier than I was at my smallest and my smallest was still far from my goal or the weight I should be for my height.
I'm a 30 something gal at 187 and wanting to make it at least to 149. I've been heavy all my life. I will never forget the fitness tests in 5th grade soooo many years ago, I weighed in at 135 and all my friends, especially they guys, made fun of me because I was heavier than all of them. In high school I stayed in the 180s and then after college I puffed up to over 250. At this point in my life, I focus more on how I feel than how I look and the real motivation behind my desire to lose weight is to be healthy ... looking good is just icing on the cake.
I would love to meet some people with similar goals. I'd especially be interested in talking to someone who is around the same age and with the same amount of weight to lose. Would love to talk about what works, what doesn't, etc. and maybe make a new friend or two along the way. :flowerforyou: I love reading nutrition and fitness books, magazines, etc. I love learning!!!!!
P.S. I am not into fad diets, diet pills, or any other gimmick of the day. I want to lose weight in a healthy way and in a way that makes it eaiser to keep it off in the long term.

Hi, and welcome to THE best site on the web! :flowerforyou:
Between the easy to use food counter (which by the way is SUCH an eye opener!) and all the wonderfully supportive members, you WILL be able to lose the weight that you want to, AND, it'll "almost" be easy doing it!
I recommend logging ALL your foods BEFORE you have them, rather than later, as it tends to lead to better food choices. (not to mention you'll know if you've got enough numbers left to have a night time snack, like I ALWAYS try to do!) Some people also like to weigh and measure some things, such as meats, rather than just estimating and possibly being WAY off! :noway:
Don't go making the mistake that if you have LOTS of numbers left at the end of the day that you'll lose even faster, because that DOESN'T happen. Feel free to read any info about the site in the "help" section at the top of the home page. And also, under "all topics", then "general", and check out the first few threads. They'll really help you understand how MFP works.
Before coming here, I had tried just about EVERYTHING out there, including hypnosis, TWICE, and nothing really worked until MFP!
Also, drink LOTS of water, it REALLY DOES help! :drinker:0 -
Welcome! I am also a huge fan of reading and when I started my latest weight loss journey, I went to my local libraries and checked out everything related to nutrition and exercise. I found alot of gimmicks, but the ones that made sense to me say very similar things.
1. Eat every 3 hours
2. Get plenty of fiber and lean protein
3. Strength Train
These are obviously just highlights. My favorite books are "Flip the Switch, Lost the Weight" by Dr. Cooper, "The 3-hour diet" by Jorge Cruise, and "Strong Women stay Slim" by Miriam Nelson.
You have a great attitude and I just know you will do well here.0 -

I'm 31, 5'4" & I weigh 195 & am hoping to get down to 135. It sounds like we are on a similar mission. I've tried before but this is the first time I'm taking it seriously. I'd love to keep in touch.0

I feel you on all accounts The best advice I have is to eliminate as many negatives as possible. Find an exercise or exercises you enjoy or at least can tolerate. I love elliptical b/c it easy on the knees & more fun than walking & burns more calories. If you join a gym make sure you like it b/c you won't go if you don't like it. And switch up exercises every once in awhile. For food, figure out your weaknesses (mine's coffe & soda) & slowly reduce them (I'm down to 1 coffee & 1 soda-sometimes no soda-per day--I switched out a cup of coffee for 1 low-cal KRS Energy drink). Before you know it eating healthier becomes the norm & you don't miss it...And it's okay to indulge cravings once in awhile if you really want it...I also like to look at my friend's journals for food ideas......Good Luck! You can do it0
