Ditto to all of the other posts on this forum. I've lost almost 80 lbs about 3 years with a relaxer and gained about 50 of it back (I know, it's a struggle). I've been natural for about 2 years so hair is no longer an issue. But I do agree that there is this myth, fear, misconception, whatever about black women and being healthy. I hate being looked upon as that "angry fat black woman" (that probably can sing) and want to break down those misconceptions.
Please feel free to add me! I need as much support as I can get and would like to support you as well!0 -
Thanks ladies for supporting each other! I forgot to mention that you can add me!0

Just saw this on the message board. Messages move so fast I guess that's why I missed it. Count me in. I have started the 30 Day Shred after seeing some of the great results in the Success Stories and Fitness discussions. I have done Supreme 90 Day and had great results then came the holidays and now I am getting back into the groove. Please anyone feel free to add me and I will be posting before and after results of the 30 Day Shred.0

Great post and so very TRUE!Hey Sistas! I'm so inspired by every woman on MFP but mostly..black women! The myth is that black women do not workout because we don't want to mess up our hair & many other reasons. While that may be true for some, we're choosing health over hair! Let's all come together & support each other! [if you don't mind having new friends] Black women are plagued by so many diseases. You lose more weight with support! :happy:0

I went natural so I can wash and go. Hair will not hold me down... Hypertension and diabetes are much greater concerns..
Oh yes, a very big concern. I've even walked in the rain, some a work was surprise that a black women will walk in the rain because of the hair issue. Thats what blow dryer, flat iron, curling irons are made for. :laugh:0 -
Went natural. Wash and go (:
I can exercise when I please.0 -
Awesome post... very motivating!!! I'll be checking in here regularly!0

I've pointed this out as an issue to people in the past. It hasn't been one for me for years because my hair is natural, and when it was relaxed it was wash and wear.0

Hello to all of my fitness ladies, add me as a friend and let's stay in touch and help each other ^_^ to the op: It is sad that the hair excuse is true but it is understandable. I'm coming up with many alternatives for women who want to be fit and also look beautiful. ^_^
I've been natural now over 2 years. As far as exercising I either wear it in a bun or braided. I also wear lace wigs, or regular wigs to the gym... guess it all depends on my mood and what will hold up after a bunch of sweat lol. ^_^0 -
Anyone can feel free to add me. We can all take this journey together.0

Hi all! It is exciting to read about sistas serious about fitness! Even in Chicago I don't meet a lot of us who openly place this as a priority, so this is great! If you could use another buddy and for any Chi-town people please add me, I'd live to read about you!0

About the hair, I don't trip because of the locs. A few years ago, I had the short do that had to be done every week. I was taking a class in karate for a while and loved it so much, that do would just get a scarf around it and I'd sweat myself happy! The rewards of the class were so much more than the hair. I realized that we have to find something that means more than image and I did! It was an exciting time.0
