Scared, but I know I need to be here...

Hello everyone! My name is Aran. I'm going to share with all of you the usual story of "I've Been Heavy All My Life" BUT what I will NOT do is settle for that story as an excuse to why I'm still obese.
To be honest, I'm scared to loose weight because this has been my comfort zone most of my life, but that is about to change. Bottom line... no more excuses. I want to become the REAL me & stop hiding under layers of fat. I know who I am on the inside & I love who that is. I need to allow myself to find out who I am on the outside.
Being 300+ lbs is NOT who I am... but this is scary because I'm afraid if I loose the weight who I am on the inside will change. Does this make sense to anyone out there? I know this is probably one of the biggest contradictory introductions some of you have probably read, but I'm serious about changing my lifestyle because loosing weight is NOT about dieting.
I need help & motivation. I have to do this for me... no one else.

Absolutely...for some of us that is actually motivation...
But who you are may very well change...but its pretty likely it will change for the better...It's understandable to be scared...I've lost 12 lbs in the last month and I'm still scared. That's why MFP is here!0 -

There is nothing wrong with some (inside) change that will more than likely come from (outside) changes that will happen.
I understand that change is hard and scary, its a total unknown. One thing to keep in mind is that the change will be gradual, it wont and doesn't need to happen over night.
As you start to lose weight you will get to know the 'new' you, you may or may not like that person. It only matters if YOU like the new you. If you don't then make more changes.
Anytime a person starts out on a journey into the unknown its a little scary but at the same time that is what makes it exciting and an adventure.. If it was boring it wouldn't be worth it now would it..
As you go along you will meet people and make friends and find the support system you will need and what works for you..
Don't be scared to change... be afraid NOT to..
You can add me if you wish... : )0 -

You can do this and what will change on the inside is how you feel. You will feel so much more better about yourself than you do now. Good luck on your journey. It is life changing in a good way.0

i can relate to this, i am very worried that becoming a 'normal' weight will change my personality, but to be honest i have enough love and compassion in my heart that i know i won't turn into a bad person. if anything, all that will happen is that i will be more positive and want to share my success with people who need the help and encouragement, just like i do right now.
we can all do it if we just help each other and pass on the kind words.
don't be afraid, this is it!0 -
I think it's a certainty that the person you are inside will change as you make your way through taking care of yourself in this way. You'll probably learn things about yourself as well. But this sort of change is a good thing, even if it is scary at the beginning.

Aran,
Hi girl! Welcome and congrats for taking the first step to a healthier you!! Thirty-two months ago I weighed in at 324 lbs. and like you the unhealthy me was happy, content, and warm all rolled up under all that weight. Taking the first step is always the hardest and i worried also about how I, on the inside would change. I totally get your post. Makes complete sense to me!!! I can tell you that I love the "ME" on the inside now just as much as ever!!! Even though I have lost 87 lbs I am still me. What I had to learn was that that "number" at my feet DID NOT define who I was on the inside. As my body became healthier, so did my mind, the "ME" on the inside grew and became stronger, more fit as well. I managed to NOT get lost in all the shedding weight!!! Aran, you can do this!! I believe in you!!
Add me as a friend if you would like...I am still working toward my goal weight we can do this together!0 -
airie I know EXACTLY how you feel!!! You just punch that fear in the face!! you can do this!! I know it is scary but you have lots of mfp pals to help u along the way0

Welcome!
Here's some insight on the human persona:
When one gets "Comfortable" we become complacent. Change makes most uneasy because we fear the unknown future.
Combine these two...and you realize the present is all you have. The more complacent we are in any area of our lives, the more damaging the results and the more difficult it is to repair.
I offer up 3 words of encouragement for you - Choose. Act. Succeed.
You have made the choice to better your health.
ACT upon that choice with determination, perseverance, and the WANT.
In doing so, YOU WILL SUCCEED.
Do not look at this as "another diet", because it is not. It is a lifestyle. A diet is the habitual process of the food and drink you intake on a daily basis.
Do not think this is difficult, or you cannot achieve. YOU CAN. 90% of your challenge comes from the mental state. Stay Focused, 100% Honest with YOURSELF, Determined to Succeed and you will! If you have a bad day, shrug it off...refocus and move forward. Just hold yourself accountable. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES. You either DO, or DO NOT.
IF YOU WANT IT, GET IT!!!!!0 -
A lot of people are scared of change. This is not unusual.
It is a good step that you have joined and are trying to get over your fear.
My biggest challenge this year is getting over fears. I joined a running clinic, I have goen skating, and I am trying Soccer in the fall! I can tell you...I am so afraid of making an @$$ out of myself in front of people...always have felt this insane fear...but I realize now that I won't grow as a person and achieve all the things I want to achieve unless I push my limits.
I wish you all the luck in your journey!! I am confident if you stay motivated, do everything in moderation, and start to incorporate movement into your daily routine that you will succeed at losing some weight!

I know where you are coming from, and I can tell you from experience that as long as you are committed to the journey, you can do it!
Sometimes it seems insurmountable, but break up your goals into bite-size peices and before you know it, you were there. After all...you can't eat an elephant all at once!!0 -
Welcome!
As others have said, there may be change, but it'll be a GOOD change! Hopefully you'll be able to take pride in all your hard work, and there's a great deal of satisfaction in knowing that you are doing the right thing for YOU!0 -
You should be really proud of yourself for deciding to make a change even though your scared.Thank you so much for sharing and being so open. Openness can only help you reach your goals, continue asking yourself the hard questions and facing your fears. You can add me as a friend, I would be glad to have you as one.0
