I can only speak from my personal experience with HCG.which was positive.

I used the homeopatic hcg drops which I ordered on the internet. They were $30 for a 40 day supply. I followed the diet protocol, but not to the T. I did not like most of the veggie choices, so I subbed in other veggies with similar calorie & nutrition content as the suggested veggies. I did fine with this.
I consistantly lost about a pound a day. I did not feel hungry the entiretime I was on the diet. I tracked my calories on MFP(my journal is open if you are interested. 500 cal diet followed 12/5/11-1/4/12) and I stayed right around 500 cal most days. I did slip up and cheat a few times and experienced a stall, but not a gain. I cheated over xmas weekend(pretty much ate everything in sight and drank alcohol) and I gained 7 pounds back. I lost this back over the next week or so.
My total weight loss was 20 pounds in 30 days. My blood pressure when from 130/90 to 122/80 from Dec to Jan. This was the greatest benifit...aside from the weight loss...for me because every member of my family(even the thin ones) suffers from high blood pressure and is taking medication.
I am currently on Phase 4 which is normal eating(carbs & all) and I have maintained my weight perfectly. I follow pretty healthy eating now for the most part, but I give myself 1 "cheat" day a week to eat whatever I want. I have found that my desire to eat "bad food" has decreased a lot. I will have a few bites of cake or whatever it is an be satisfied and stop at that. I definatly have continued to eat very "clean" for the most part and I do not eat much processed food at all. Mostly fresh fruits & veggies, natural cheeses, lean meats & eggs, whole grain bread products.
I do not think this diet is the answer to obesity, but it is what worked for me. And it has worked for several people I know. I do not have long term experience to see if I will gain it back, but the people I know who have done it have maintained a healthy lifestyle and the weight loss for more than 3 years. I did not experience ANY bad side effects while on the diet. I felt good, selpt great, had pelnty of energy, always felt full and satisfied with my food and I lost weight and lowered my blood pressure.
I realize that I would have lowered my blood pressure just by losing weight, but HCG is what worked for me to lose the weight. The motivation of seeing a lower number on the scale each morning was great.

I was on HCG for 30 days total.
    Start weight- 290 lbs
Weight at end of 500 cal diet- 270 lbs
    Weight today- 266
    Starting blood pressure 130/90
    Blood pressure today- 122/80
    Starting waist measurement 138 cm
    Waist measurement today 128 cm
    Starting body fat 46%
    Body fat today 42%

I will be doing a second round of HCG drops when my 6 weeks of maintence is done because I have a lot of weight still to lose. I think that there is research for both sides of this story and of course each persons experience is going to be different. At 100+ pounds overweight, this diet did not impose any threats to my health that my excess weight did not already.
From my own personal experience, I would recommend this diet to anyone with a lot of weight to lose. It is certianly not the only thing that works, but it worked & continues to work for ME.

I have to add that you MUST change your eating habits for life if you want to maintain weight loss. If you go back to your old habits, which got you fat in the first place, of course you will gain it back...and fast! After any diet, including HCG you have to maintain A HEALTHY DIET to maintain weight loss for life. If you eat healthy most of the time, there is always room for splerging on whatever food you want every once in a while without negative effects on your weight.

It is NOT healthy or safe to go on ANY diet that makes you lose a pound a day. If you did not become ill on that dangerous starvation HCG diet, you are lucky.

Please do not risk your health by doing it again. You do not know what the long term effects might be of putting your body into starvation mode for weeks.

The only reason people lose weight on that plan is you are only allowed to eat 500 calories a day. HCG has been scientifically proven to do NOTHING to help with weight loss or to make it safe to eat only 500 calories a day. It will not protect muscle, reset your metabolism or do anything else the snake oil salesmen that sell it claim. Dr. Simeons was a quack doctor. His "HCG protocol" has absolutely NO scientific backing and is not worth risking your health on.

The MFP moderators have been cautioning members against attempting that diet because it is so dangerous.

Please read the articles on these websites before you try HCG. I know some people that put their faith in the HCG diet, and became very ill from malnutrition as a result. It is NOT safe!

The Government is now in the process of getting all that fraudulent stuff off the market, and it's about time!
