Coffee

Greetings MFP's!
I am new, officially began my path to a renewed self on January 19th of this year.
Simple yet serious question!
I have given up soda, haven't had tea (especially the dreaded McDonalds sweet tea!), BUT I still drink coffee daily, but only one cup instead of usual 2-3 per day.
Should coffee go too? Is the caffeine counterproductive to my lifestyle changes?

I think the answers are going to be all over the map on this. I gave up caffeine for a while but am now drinking it again, but only occasionally... a couple cups of coffee a week. Coffee has health benefits as long as your'e not adding a bunch of sugar, cream, etc. My standard rule is, all things in moderation!
Good luck on your journey!0 -
I have two cups of coffee a day. I doubt I could function without them!!!
I don't believe this is about making drastic changes and especially as a newbie I wouldn't deny myself things because constant deprivation will make you want to quit.
Use this to learn how much of the foods you do eat are within your calorie goal. I learned that high calorie foods had to go and got swapped out for low calorie ones that I could eat in abundance!
Stick with MFP, it really works, but just don't starve or deny yourself and get exercising so you can reward yourself with nice foods!!!!
Good luck! xx0 -
I don't think one or 2 cups could be bad. Just watch the sugar/artie sweeteners. Caffeine is an effective stimulant. Hopefully you get good sleep though because that helps a lot in the fitness dept.
Personally, I don't drink it anymore after whitening my teeth at the dentist.0 -
I have never given up coffee! I don't drink a ton, usually one cup a day in the morning or on a rare day, two cups. Just watch out for whatever else you put in it. I just use one teaspoon of sugar (15 calories) so it isn't exactly a calorie buster. You need to watch out if you use a ton of sugar and cream and such.
I agree that you don't want to give up too much at once anyway. Eliminating soda and sweet tea is a fantastic start and will get you more mileage than giving up coffee. I have never read or heard anything about how a cup a day would hurt you. Although, I am an admitted coffee defender0 -
I say stay with the coffee. One shot of espresso has only 5 calories. Just add splenda instead of sugar and you'll be good (or add some Bailey's or Kahlua mmmmm [though that will add a bunch of extra calories])0

I drink coffee everyday! I don't think I could function without it. Now that I'm dieting I drink my coffee black, with one splenda. If you can avoid milk, creamer and real sugar then you're cutting out all of the fat. Plus spenda only has one carb per packet. It may take a while to get use to it, but its worth it. I'm actually drinking a cup as I comment lol. Good luck!!!0

I drink two 4 oz cups each day. Black, still losing weight, still healthy when I go to the docs. HTH!
ETA: I drink the coffee black.... LOL... Not that I am black.0 -
I drink a coffee (black) every morning, and occasionally a second. It's low in cals and delicious.0

Great, wow, you guys are just as fixed to coffee for me. I think I will consider cutting it back. My coffee isnt just coffee. Its coffee, with exotic cream, sugar, whipped cream, sometimes a dip of chocolate or caramel. So it isnt really coffee anymore, more like a coffee sunday. Today was only the first day, I have tried to stop drinking it before and it didnt last long.
Not that I am punishing myself strickly, just trying to address foods and drinks that have a stronghold over me....
Thanks MFP'ers!0
