I have a knee injury and although I can run now, before I got used to it I couldn't get very far! I find circuit training style DVD's are very good as it's lots of different moves so you don't get the knee pain from doing the same movement over and over!0

Ive heard the Jillian Michaels 30 days shred is supposed to be pretty good?0

Yeah I started with that one and it is amazing! Really good if you're not used to exercising and I found it built my strength up really fast (i.e. could hardly do any of it on day 1, found it too easy on day 30!!). I have since done her Ripped in 30 and Banish Fat Boost Metabolism and find them all very good and massive calorie burners!0

Cycling or swimming are kind on your joints!0

I have to Very Bad Knee's and wear Don Joy braces now when I exercise.. I do the treadmill (which is not very comfortable on my knee's) but only walk at a slight incline and never go above 2.6 on the speed. I prefer the Elliptical, it has no jarring on my knee's and glides smoothly and I can normal get a great cardio workout on there. On days when I just can not do either of those because of the pain my YMCA has Seated Elliptical's and Recumbent Bikes that work quite nicely.... On those days I also mix in the Rowing machine, being seated and having the weight off my knee's on there doesn't bother them at all and I sweat buckets doing just 30 minutes. Lastly on Lifting days I do alot of cable machines and seated dumbbell work. I tend to avoid the bench press, squat racks, anything I have to load plates on the bars. I do high reps (12-20 reps) with lighter weights and only rest 20-30 seconds between sets. I get a really great cardio workout doing this and start to finish my weight training sessions last about 60-70 minutes... I group muscles together..... Back/Biceps together....... Tricep/Chest together....... Shoulders/Abs together..... My knee's are to bad to do leg weights for them it is strictly cardio..... And after I am done I hit the recliner with my Ice Pack Wraps on both knee's for 40 minutes faithfully... It cuts down on the swelling after I get off my feet.... and numbs them up so the pain isn't to great immediately after....... Good Luck................0

if you have a knee injury or problem, i recommend you talk to your doctor or orthopedist and see what they recommend.
i don't recommend 30DS. it does have a few movements that could irritate you knee. i had really horrible knees, so i started biking a lot. it is such a great work out that is easy on your joints. it allows you to go longer and further then running, and at the end you are left knowing you had a work out, but not beat up.0 -
IMHO (and on the assumption that you are of average fitness) the best form of exercise is one which you enjoy and fits in with your life.
But more specific to you, whilst strength training and HIIT may be better for weight loss, these may be impossible for you due to your knee problem. It looks like you are looking for Cardio (since you mention running)? and in that case the suggestion of Swimming (or cycling if you knee allows) seems good.
Is you knee problem something permanent or a (hopefully) short term?

Basically its an old football (soccer) wear and tear injury, the patella had blisters and the fat pads had worn down, then had key hole surgery to remove rough bits and blisters. Doctor said to give up football if I wanted to walk when im 50, hence the weight gain as I played 5-6 times per week.
I now play tennis which strangely doesnt seem to hurt my knees (probably because it doubles).
I seem to be ok on the stationary bike, dont feel like im getting much of a work out on it though, will do 10-20 mins at around 30kph, will be a little out of breath but would recover easily within 5 mins.0 -
I go swimming - since taking this up I have found I don't suffer as much with the aches I used to get in my knees, and you can see from my profile my weight loss x0

In your case I would recommend going to see a sports physiotherapist. GPs are notoriously conservative with sporting injuries and will often tell you to stop, whereas a physio with a knowledge of (and sympathy for) sports people may give a more balanced opinion and at least give you an idea as to how far you can push things without making it worse.
Unfortunately this probably means going private.0
