Is it true when a woman exercise on her period she will cramp more?
If yes why?

I'm kinda worried about walking/jogging tomorrow because my friend said exrecise makes your cramps worst because of the sweat and movement of your body. My mother also agree with this but I really want to reach my 20lb goal and move forward I want to lose 70lbs by my 22nd birthday 9-14 and I dont want to let my womanhood stop me from reaching my goal!

I've always had cramp during my periods, but they never got worse with exercise. They actually seem less after working out!
  • Studies are kind of conflicted about this actually. I personally find it does make mine much better, although at the start of my exercise it feels a little worse. Within 10 minutes the pain is gone. Just try it and see if it helps you or not.

I completely 100% disagree. I feel more relaxed and my TOM is lighter!

Just sort of go with how you feel. If you feel ok, I don't think the exercise makes it worse. If you already feel bad, a day or two off isn't going to slow your progress by much at all.
  • I think the problem is when TOM is around, because of the cramps we are less likely to exercise... But I have found that being active actually helps... I don't know why, but it definitely helps me to exercise, less cramping, DEFINITELY, and I'm one who gets TERRIBLE cramps normally.

According to the Doctors show, exercises during that time of the month helps with cramping if anything

Exercises don't make cramps worse for me, but I used to not want to workout during that time. For me, it was more of an excuse than anything.

Your body releases endorphines when you work out. This should actually make you feel better instead of worse. But every woman is different. What works for one may not work for you. I say give it a shot and see how you feel.

The only way to really know is to try it for yourself. I work out throughout my TOM. I rearrange my rest day that week because I know the one day in my cycle exercise will make me feel worse. Now that I'm thinking about it... now that I've lost some weight, I can pretty much work out on my normal schedule. I don't feel as bad as I once did.

I used to get cramps so bad that I would sometimes pass out. However, I did find that even a little bit of exercise helped ease the pain. I agree that you should listen to your body since we are all different. Give working out a shot. Best case, you may feel better.

Although I've never had a big problem with cramping, I noticed when keeping up with regular exercise while my cycle, it's actually relieved the pain. Hope that helps. :)

When I workout often, my period is actually a lot lighter, and doesn't last very long, AND my cramps are slim to none!

No way! Nothing helps my cramps like running!
  • B complex, lots of water, and exercise. I used to have cramps that were almost as bad as labor pains (yes I can honestly say that, I birthed 2 kids naturally!!) B Complex, lots of water, and exercise. I also see my chiropractor once a month and that helps too!

The more I move the less I hurt. That goes with TOM, arthritis, headaches....all of that. I am actually starting to like exercising a little because it relieves my pains. Hope it helps you instead of hurts!

    Endorphins rule!

I always heard the opposite...Where did you hear this information at? I have never once heard that. I've always never had cramps, LUCKILY *knock on wood* so I don't know from experience but yea...I've always heard it HELPS cramps, not makes them worse...

I agree with many of the posters.....exercise is very relaxing to me and when its that TOM it helps alleviate the pain. I may feel bloated and ugly during that time....but the exercise makes me feel pretty.

What helps me is peanut butter and chocolate, i like to go to jamba juice before the gym and i buy a peanut butter mood, the large kind. It has 1000 calories, so it gives me better motivation to workout hard.

Anton - get out of here!!

Try it out and see how it works out for you. Try light exercises first and see if they get worse, if not gradually increase your intensity..but in my experience NOT exercising made them worse. Moving around always makes me feel better when I'm cramping. Also, if you're exercising a lot and drinking adequate amounts of water, it'll make your cramps less severe or close to nonexistent, I've realized.
  • I find that going for a run helps things tremendously. Things losen up and lessen the cramps.
  • I don't know if it's because of my PCOS but my cramps have me curled up in a fetal position nearly in tears. Unfortunately, they come often but they never last long. Whenever I can get cardio in, the cramps still come but they are not nearly as bad.

If I don't let myself use it as an excuse, for me, it actually makes my cramps lighter
