    IT Crowd

    the-it-crowd-2.jpg

Jen: If you type "google" into Google you can break the internet - so please... no one try it, even for a joke.
Roy: You remember the woman from last night?
    Moss: She was a delight.
Roy: Yeah. We get outside. There's a group of tramps, two of whom she knows by name. She starts screaming at them, "You owe me money. You owe me money". She thinks that the tramps owe her money. Next thing I know, it all kicks off and I'm running for my life. It was a horrible evening, Moss, a real horrible evening. She's a really horrible woman.
Moss: Right. But you slept with her?
    Roy: Yeah.
Douglas: You've got spunk and balls. I like that in a woman

Some good British comedies, if anyone is interested. Although You certainly can't go wrong with Fry and Laurie and Blackadder.

Peep Show, Nathan Barley, The IT Crowd, Brass Eye, The Day Today, Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, The Mighty Boosh, Father Ted (Irish), Red Dwarf, The Office (UK Version!), The Young Ones, Bottom, I'm Alan Partridge, The League of Gentlemen...I could go on but I'll stick with those for now. I imagine British humour is a bit odd to anyone who is new to it, as it is traditionally, dry, severe, sarcastic and also often surreal.

You COULD go on, but that list is pretty much perfect (except it's missing out on Shaun Locks criminally underrated 15 Stories High, if you haven't watched it before by all means DO!)

I second pretty much all of the above

15 Storeys High is a classic - I just love Sean Lock, he does the funniest "grumpy guy" character ever, but in a way that you still suspect he's a really nice bloke underneath. And his appearances on QI are simply hilarious! (which is the best quiz show on TV bar none, and presented by Stephen Fry!) Example:

Stephen Fry: If you could only take one thing with you to a desert island, what would it be?
Sean Lock: David Attenborough! (pause) So that he can tell me what kind of animals I've been shagging - I draw the line at mammals!

(paraphrasing slightly but I can't find it on Youtube - if anyone can, please post the link!)

Also, let's not forget Lead Balloon with Jack Dee, the wonderfully surreal Eddie Izzard for standup, and Harry Hill's TV burp which is the best thing on ITV by a mile  As for the ladies, I'm sure Jo Brand and Sarah Millican would be a hoot to have around for a dinner party

There's probably loads more I've forgotten to mention, but that just shows how many brilliant comedians we have in Britain! (and this comes from someone who didn't even speak English twenty years ago...)

No - I can only come back with less subtle innuendo on that one so I'm putting the joke down and backing away slowly

I was going to bring that up if no one else did. Great show. Saw one last year, totally by accident, called 'The Book Club'. It was so funny. Have to agree with most of these. 'Good Neighbors' anybody? 'The Two Ronnies'? 'Dad's Army'? My dad loved those. I used to watch them with him.

Agreed, love that show. It's a shame it got buried in some random time slot and people missed it.

'15 Stories High' I never realised that was a TV show. It is good but I've only ever heard the audio version on Radio 4. Lots of good comedy starts there, particularly panel shows such as 'Have I Got News'.

This is ancient, but I think 'Dad's Army' was a great comedy in it's day. The writing wasn't that excellent, but it was blessed with some brilliant comedy actors who made it a national treasure - Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier and John Laurie, all long dead of course now, but stalwarts of British comedy films from the 50-70's.

More latterly 'Not Going Out' , written by my favourite standup Lee Mack
  • Thanks all for the leads. Goodbye spare time.
  • If you like Peep Show you would like "That Mitchell and Web Look" too!

I was waiting for someone to mention League of Gentlemen. "YOU'RE MY WIFE NOW, DAVE!"

    "Dave, you're toilet was broken"

  • LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • YES! Just saw this thread, so if I am repeating any suggestions, sorry!!
Love Black Adder so much that I went out and bought a couple of the series on dvd a few years back.
Red Dwarf and, as long as we're mentioning Ab Fab, I would be remiss if I didn't recommend French and Saunders!!! Their comedy spans many countries and generations of pop culture. Love them!!! (They were even characters in an episode of Jim Henson's The Storyteller when I was a child. Didn't know it then, though. But, I can tell you that when I watched it again as an adult, the episode soared to great heights of laughter for me.)
