Question about "starvation mode"

I didn't know which catagory to put this question under, but I've always wondered and was hoping somebody on here could answer me.

Most people say that eating under your BMR or under 1200 calories (net) a day will cause your body to go into starvation mode meaning that you will experience little or no weight loss, but how come people with anorexia lose astonishing amounts of weight on such little calories?

FYI: I am not in any way suggesting that this is a healthy way of weight loss, I was just wondering how this rule applies to this situation.

Have you ever seen how skeletal an anorexic is? They have no muscles left. It's all gone. They look sickly and miserable. They get sick frequently and don't have much energy. They ARE in starvation mode, but there's not much left for the body to chew on anymore.
