The best muscle up advice I could give, is to start by using a low enough bar that you can use your legs to propel you. Obviously it's cheating, but eventually you'll propel yourself less and less, and get stronger and more comfortable.

I've been working on various progressions. Right now I'm not strong enough to do one, but I want to learn to feel familiar with the motion so that when I am strong enough it shouldn't take much longer! The progression work I've done has been really helpful - several different ones, usually involving the rings being low, often with my on my knees, or put them at chest level and using a band. Practicing that motion when I first get up and where my hands go and forcing through like I'm breaking through a glass pane with my head (if that makes sense).

I'm hoping within a year I'll be there. Yeah, yeah, it's not as awesome as a strict, but just to take a step in the right direction would be a victory!

    Would doing dips help?

the substitution for muscle ups that i do in the crossfit workouts is 2pullups and 1 dip for each prescribed muscle up.
  • My best is 3 in a row.
When I started I could barely do 1 with a spotter.

If you can, have a spotter hold your ankles and you can use them as a platform to help you.
Practice your ring dips and strict pullups too
