I saw that show on TV last night. Seems like some people really go to the extreme as far as preparing for the worst. I'm just curious as to what the you think about it. Are we going to face the end of time or something close to it? How many of you have thought about this and are doing some sort of prepping? Or, is it a waste of time because if something were to happen, our government will take care of us? Post your thoughts.

To be honest with you, if it's going to be all fire and brimstone and what not, I'm not so sure I'd want to rough it til I made it.

We are prepared for short term emergencies like earthquakes, flood, etc. We have a substantial first aid kit, water for a week, and a well stocked pantry. We probably have more than your average person, but we are in a somewhat remote area, so help may be slow.

I'll leave the rest of it to them. Honestly, I think it's more of a hobby for them if anything. They aren't hurting anyone, so what's it matter to me?

Not being snarky but I have found worrying about things that are hypothetical and beyond our control is a bit pointless.
The bottom line is that we can only prepare for what we know and in all the crap hit the fan scenarios the situation would be completely unknown until a reality.
That isn`t to say don`t be prepared for possible short term emergencies with food and supplies for a couple weeks to even a month (thinking natural disaster) but don`t waste time trying to figure out how a "Mad Max" world will be like.

I watched an episode for the first time this weekend. It was...interesting! I agree with mrsdizzyd - we are prepped for short term emergencies, water and food for ~ 2 weeks, cash on hand, enough gear to outfit a small army, and medical kits and training to handle most small emergencies. Those people were just whack-a-doodle, but I guess everyone needs a hobby

I have enough food and water in my basement to last until 12/20/21012. We'll all be dead on the 21st.

We've got 3 day emergency supplies set up. We're working on a 2 week. We're on well water, so we have a generator that will give us water in the event of power outage. We're working on proper food storage, should we be unable to get to a grocery store. And basic first aid. We've also got protection and know how to use it. Our goals are to eventually have 3-6 month emergency supplies, maybe even a year. Anything beyond that would be near impossible for us to manage on our own. And frankly, that would mean very bad things indeed.

We really enjoy watching the show. But some of the people on the show...I'm not so sure I want as spokesperson for our "cause."

Personally, I DO NOT want the government to "Take Care" of my family. Think about what a Great job they did "taking care" of the people after hurricane Katrina.

What is the worst that can happen if you stock up on supplies? You have extra food to eat in case of emergency, or job loss. Win Win.

emergency kits - which reminds me, i need to replenish the water - and first aid. canned goods are never lonely at our house. but i do feel like i've let preparations for disasters fall lax. being broke will do that. LOL.

i've given SERIOUS consideration to going sub-terranian. in fact there was a decommissioned missle silo in the Dakotas that i was sorely tempted to buy. but that has more to do with extreme photosensativity than with doomsday planning.

and also, i'm getting fit. zombie apoc is one of my reasons for being here. zombies hate fast food.

Waste of time because you're probably right, the government probably will kill off the rest of us so it really wouldn't matter.

They predicted 4 inches of snow a couple of weeks ago so there is no water, bread, milk available at the supermarket for at least another week or so I'll have to wait to start my preparations!!!

The government take care of our family...That's a funny one. LOL I have thought about emergency preparation and have things to take a through a few days but no major planning. But if something ever happened I would definitely be self sufficient.

Some of it is reasonable, some is ridiculous. And some of those people weren't just prepping, you could tell they were ITCHING for an armageddon. Finally, an end to their boring, mundane 24/7, and the beginning of an exciting new era where if they hold out against the slavering atheist zombie hordes long enough no doubt jebus will descend to bring them to paradise which will be a cross between Wal-mart and Dave & Busters
  • We've just started prepping. Better to be safe than sorry, and yes it is much like a hobby. You can prep for what you think may happen which is why some go to such extremes...to cover anything and everything likely. The government will not take care of us, if something catastrophic happens. Again it all comes down to better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Grow your own food and learn to preserve it, learn to hunt, fish and take care of you and yours. No I don't think therre will be a zombie apocalypse (fun to pretend though!). Oh and yes my family likes the show.

My family has been doing some prep work...if you want to call it that. Do I believe the government will or SHOULD take care of us?? Hell no. We are active in learning and living a sustainable lifestyle. My teen and 18 year old (boy & girl) both know how to use a gun to hunt, fish, live off the land, garden, reuse, re-purpose and many other things that many people in this fast paced, so far from the 'old ways' society have forgotten. It was an eye opener for us when Hurricane Charlie went through Central FL. and caused power to be out for 5+ days in our city. We had a charcoal grill and set up shop in the back yard. Our neighbor smelling the coffee was amazed we were able to literally brew on the grill. It seemed weird that he didn't realize he could. Many of our nieghbors didn't know what to do. Although we had been learning ways to do things differently if the need arose, living that week without what we all take for granted really got us to wanting to know more about sustainable living. We are not even close to living off the grid; however, if the world did stop as we know it, we would be 90% prepared to live through it, learning from others and our experiences along the way to make up for what we are lacking.

Interesting responses. Myself, I'm not going to put any faith in anyone else when it comes to taking care of myself or my family. I went through and survived Katrina. So, I know you cannot depend on the govt or insurance companies for that reason. I agree, it is a bit of a hobby but why not be prepared?

Hurricane Andrew, here...you can't count on the government. You can't count on Jeebus. It's smart to plan and prepare.

I could stockpile supplies but I believe in survival through superior firepower. It will be survival of the fittest and most well armed. Whats yours in mine, and whats mine is mine.

The theory that concerns me is that the world wide power grid could go down in February 2013 because of the solar maxima. (look it up it's a real thing) So I see nothing wrong with keeping extra on hand and bottling some water in old 2 liter soda bottles. I'm just keeping an eye on the latest info regarding the 2013 maxima and will plan accordingly :)

Haha! It's funny when people publicly proclaim that they are basically total guiltless sociopaths, kept only in check by a risk-reward assessment of punishment for violating the law. I think most people that are that awful would not admit it... cmon, cop to it, you're a big softie who'd end up giving away his last deviled egg to a hungry old woman.

It was only 60 years ago that the nazi's were trying to exterminate the Jews. Only 20 years from all the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia. Humanity in general is capable of terrible atrosities and society hasn't evolved enough yet to think that in a time of chaos that humans wouldnt revert back to their primal selves. I will protect and provide for my family with every means possible until my last dying breath.

I prep - I have enough food/water/supplies for 3 months for me and my family. And me, my wife and son all have zeroed long arms, sidearms, silencers, night vision and body armor to make sure that stuff stays with us.

Am I paranoid? No not really- the problem is that when a disaster happens it happens very fast and the time to try and find items has basically ended. And by disaster this could be anything from LA style riots to Katrina style looting. If nothing every happens- cool... I have shelves full of stuff that will begin to go out of date in 10 years. If something does happen I feel a little more secure that we can ride it out.

Prepping is also a mental thing- it amazes me how many people just blithely wander through their day and think everything will be ok if a disaster happens. They assume "someone" will provide for them- well I am not that someone. I keep my preps pretty well under wraps because I dont want a flood of people assuming I will share- which I wont. I am willing to help guide and advise people on prepping but other then that forget it- you are on your own unless you are jsut as prepped and we can benefit from one another.

Everyone should have a Bug Out Bag (or BOB). If you dont know what that is then Google it. This is a minimum in prepping.

I have a friend who lived through Katrina. When the levees broke he and his next door neighbor were prepped. His entire neighborhood left and he and his neighbor agreed to help protect each other. When the loot gangs forst appeared on his street he and his neighbor walked out onto their porches in full tactical gear with their ARs and said you can loot any house on this street but these two. The loot gang agreed to that deal and he watched as the gang kicked in the doors to the other houses and ransacked them. A few days later another gang appeared and took a shot at him- he, his neighbor, the wives and the children all shot back and that gang tore out of there never to return.

As for the TV show Preppers - good lord do those people give prepping a bad name! I turned it off after 15 minutes (similar to the idiocy on Sons of Guns...)
