Anyone have any suggestions of things I can do to burn calories while I sit at this god forsaken desk?

Get a balance ball to sit on, it may not burn tons but it might be super fun.0

Stand up while you work. Burns 30% more calories than sitting. Do 5 squats before you sit back in your chair everytime you get up. Do a few pushups on the side of your desk. Walk the long way to the bathroom.
None of that will make a big difference, but I find that remembering to keep moving helps me make better food choices all day. I used to have my email calendar set for every hour to remind me to be a little active.0 -
The balance ball idea is great. It really helps with your posture and core muscles…so it’s cool for the first day, then the 2nd day it starts to be a little uncomfortable while your muscles strengthen to support you, and then it’s great.
Also, you may want to look into the possibility of your office paying to get a Just Stand system…

It depends on how your employer feels I guess whether they would pay to have it installed but we got one installed in my office as a trial run and our boss got it approved to install the system for any employee who wanted it. It allows you to sit at your desk if you like as well as raise your computer monitor/keyboard to your standing height so you can work standing up. You can do all kinds of things while standing….leg lifts, squats in between work/phone calls. Short sets of things, that add up over the work day and keep you moving and avoiding all of the hazards associated with sitting at a computer all day long.
Other than that, at my office on my breaks I’ll: walk up the stairs of the 3 floors of the building until I have to go back to work, do ‘push-ups’ against a wall/or sturdy table in the break room, I have a jump rope that I also do in a fairly private break room on my break. I do these things if I know I’m not going to have time to work out on my treadmill at home. 10-15 minutes here and there really does get your heart rate up and blood pumping. =D0 -
can you walk at lunch? get up and do a loop around the building every so often .. um, get one of those little sets of peddles and put them under your desk and peddle peddle peddle... ankle weights and do some leg lifts under your desk? lol .. seated side bends?
hm.. thats all I have for now.0 -
I've started a little circuit training at each bathroom break LOL kind of... everytime I go to the bathroom I do 20 wall push ups and 50-100 shadow punches. It takes not much for than 1 minute and by the time I've gone to the bathroom 5 + times (I drink ALOT of water) I've gotten in 5-10 mins of cardio. Makes me feel like I'm slightly active throughout my otherwise boring day at the desk.0

i got a cheap set of pedals (stationary bike) for under the desk on amazon for like 40$ i can do it in business attire and not that disruptive really0
-
if you are able to in your office setting... look for a compact mini elliptical machine... you can get one on amazon for about 90.... I put boards under my keyboard to lift it, tilt the screen back, and type and answer phones while i pedal away... otherwise, ask your office if they can get you a desk that the keyboard and monitor will raise so you can stand as you do your job...and sit when you need to..... do lunges, squats etc... even just pace... get resistance bands and do arm exercises etc....0

I will do leg extensions, ab work, even bicep curls or tricep extensions at my desk. Do wall pushups in the bathroom and "potty squats." Every little bit counts!0

<--- I sit on a balance ball all day!
When no one is looking, I roll around on it, stretch my back out, attempt push ups...haha
I do lunges/squats while waiting at the photocopier0 -
I pace around the laboratory like crazy. My coworkers sometimes think I'm insane for it.0

Invest in a REALLY heavy mouse.
Haha... I got nuthin'. If any of you invent the "Mouserciser" I'm gonna want some royalties!
I sit at a desk all day too but I do find that if I drink as much water as I should I end up making plenty of walks to the bathroom which is around 200 ft away...0 -
Get one of those desk cycles...it goes under your desk and you can peddle all day!
Or try searching google.... It is my go-to answer for everything:

Move… get up and walk around often. My doctor told me that sitting too long actually inhibits the production of enzymes that help metabolism. Well… that's my layman's way of describing it. She said the best way to help weight loss at a desk job is to simply get up and move around for a few minutes (say take a 5 minute walk around the office building) several times a day. She also told me about a "desk treadmill" that fits under the desk, but I'm pretty sure that would't qualify for reimbursement from my company! :happy:0

My co-worker and I are both on MFP and have been working really hard at achieving our weight loss & health goals. One thing that we started doing after New Years was taking walks. Half of our co-workers are smokers and will go numerous times a day, spending anywhere between 5-15 minutes per 'smoke break'. We felt we were being slighted because we didn't get the same type of de-stress time away from our desks, so we took it in a healthier direction. Once in the morning & again in the afternoon, we take a break and do four laps around the company parking lot or just down a block through this really cute, small neigborhood. We average about a mile per walk and time it so that from the time we leave our desks to when we get back is always right at 20 minutes. It helps with mid-day stress relief and it's roughly an extra 200 calories burned during our otherwise sedentary workday.
The ball idea is great. I sit on one all the time at home while I'm watching TV, but hadn't thought of bringing one to work (hmmmm...i wonder how weel it would fit wit hthe height of my desk?...something to look into...)0 -
I walk laps in my classroom. I have racked up as much as 6 miles on a teacher inservice day!0

Use it while working... even right now.
And invest in some hand weights. Do curls when you have free time. (Bicep / tricep)0 -
