So I've heard Protein bars are PACKED with sugar?
But why do people still eat them instead of just taking a protein shake?
I bought some bars the other day to test them out....so will see how it goes, but they're also packed with calories are they not? =S

There are sugar free protein bars on the market that are good. You have to hunt for them. They can be higher in calories than shakes but they are more convenient if you are on the run. I use Dr CarbRite Sugar Free Bars. They are very filling. I eat half at a time.0

I'm going to be baking my own this morning. Its going to be a busy week and generally I prefer to not use protein shakes or bars for nutrition, but I need something quick to grab and eat and don't love the chemicals or preservatives in alot of the bars I have seen so I found a recipe for making them at home. We will see what happens.0

Look into Quest protein bars they are one of the healthier options out there.0

There are great options for protein bars. There are plenty without too many calories or sugar. I like bars and shakes but I much prefer bars bc I would rather eat my caloeies than drink them0
-
I eat protein bars because they are delicious and some of them taste just like candy bars.
I have a huge sweet tooth!
I know it's not the most ideal option, but I would rather eat a protein bar than a cupcake or candy bar or something like that.0 -
There are brands out there that have less sugar in them. You just have to look around.
I mostly use shakes, but sometimes if I'm getting lunch in town I'll get a protein bar with it just to keep the protein levels up, or I'll get the bars as a snack if I'm hungry to keep me going 'til I get home. They fill you up a lot more than shakes.0 -
I enjoy supreme protein bars. I don't know about sugar content but they're great meal supplements in a pinch and when I want to feel like eating a candy bar I usually grab the smaller version of my favorite flavor.0

First question: Most are candy with protein.
Second question: Because people like candy and its marketed nicely.0 -
Ha.
Okay.
Well i got sent a sample one with my maxitone.
I like the idea of using it as a snack before a work out. But now so sure. I have a HUGE sweet tooth too so I get a lot of sugar in my diet already0 -
Yeah, I don't do the shakes or bars, waste, they are packed with sugar and the sugar-free ones have the fake sugar in em and I can taste that a mile away.........I just choose something way better for you in place of that stuff........0

The protein bars I buy are only 8g of sugar. They have 30g of protein in them and are around 280 calories. Why would I choose those over a shake? Well, they are far easier to put in my purse than a shaker cup. I can leave them sit in my car and they won't go bad. It's easier for me to take them to work vs having to take the powder, buy a water or milk, and then worry about the dirty shaker cup sitting in my locker since I have no way to wash it.
That is why I prefer bars over the powder. And honestly, 8g of sugar isn't much sugar at all considering you're getting 30g of protein in them.0 -
It's so weird.
I used to get told on here that protein bars are worse for you than protein shakes...now it's the complete opposite haha!
Anyone in the UK know of UK brands that are decent?
I used to be against these, but I actually like them now...kinda tried it and now bosh, they grew on me.0 -

I like the power bar reduced sugar for.breakfast on those mornings with no time to prepare and eat a meal. They have 1g sugar. 29 g protein and 280 cal. I also have trouble digesting milk so I like the calcium I get from an occasional shake , and it also can subdued a sweet tooth. So not bad, not the best option but it gets me to lunch time. I eat a fair amount of game meat and shrimp so getting enough protein is not a top priority since I get it naturally. My intake will change when I shift from fat loss to muscle building mode0

They don't have any sugar alcohols in them (which I can not have - it makes me very sick) or high fructose corn syrup in them (which I can not have either).
They taste pretty darn good too - which is a huge deal to me!0 -
met rx chocolate chocolate chunk bars are one of my favorite protein bars, and they only have 1 g of sugar and 32 g protein. Tastes pretty good and its 310 calories.0

I loved Met Rx bars ... then they started adding high fructose corn syrup to them.... I was so sad they did this (and actually wrote to them to tell them how disappointed I was). I can't have HFCS as it makes me really sick, so I was sad to see them add it to their bars.0 -
They both have **** tons of sugar added. Honestly.0

Thank you. Will give them a test0

I like the profile of Trutein protein powder
Cal: 115
Fat: 1.5
Carbs: 5
Protein: 23
The protein profile keeps me full...and I don't find it much of a hassle to throw a scoop of powder, a cup of almond milk and a handful of ice cubes in the blender for 30 seconds in the morning. I pack chicken/vegetables for lunch ...when I get home I have another shake to tide me over until I finish making my dinner. While I love protein bars, I prefer shakes.0 -
I like both shakes and bars. I generally drink EAS Carb Control or Atkins shakes or anything by Labrada. For bars I eat Healthwise, which I don't think is commercially available, and Atkins. I have been told to dial them back because I was having too much of both and not enough real food. I don't cook much and my hubby has yet to officially join me on my journey, although he is becoming a bit more conscious, so I use them when I can't think of anything better or I'm in a hurry. Average is about 150 cal., 10-15 carbs and 10-15 protein. My hubby likes Detour protein bars which I get at Sam's. I used to eat those, but I'm trying not to eat chocolate because I think it makes my skin go crazy. You can look all these up on the food database and find the exact nutrients. I think the thing you want to do is use them when you are unable or unwilling to find a real food alternative.0

I do both. Usually have a protein shake in a fruit smoothie with almond milk after a workout, total calories 150. I save the Protein Bar for when I am pressed for time and cannot eat at home or a restaurant. LARA BARS are very good. They use very few ingredients and have no added sugar. For instance the "Cashew Cookie" is made from cashews and dates. Nothing else. Calories are 230. There are many different flavors and some are lower calorie. An example is the "Apple Pie" flavor with 190 calories that is made of dates, almonds, unsweetened apples, walnuts, raisins, and cinnamon.0

I eat them for convenience - at Uni one lives in my bag and when I'm hungry I know I've got a healthier option. The energy drinks have as much calories but ARE packed wtih sugar and have more carbs than the bar. I don't have the option to carry a spare shake around with me 'in case' I fancy it.
A protein bar and a cup of tea (herbal) feels as good as a snickers bar and a real tea..
I also have a sweet tooth.0 -

Will look out for these and watch for fructose syrup..
I have not long swapped from Slimfast (yes.. I know but I hadn't thought to look at sugars and still have shakes left I need to finish - can't afford financially to replace them).
I'm using the MaxiMuscle I think they're called, the meal replacement, it's a lot better than the slimfast, but dare say not the best.0 -
I'm up for to option of homemade protein bars, if anyone has any good recipes. I do the bars since easier for me. I never was a breakfast person and my dr told me I need to be getting some protein in the morn so started with protein bars. Hard to find ones I can tolerate that are low in sugar.0
-
Hi .. what is your recipe for these?
Thanks0 -
Most protein shakes are packed with sugar too.
The thing is, for post exercise recovery food, which is what most of these things are designed for, the optimum ratio of carbs to protein is 3:1 or even 4:1 for long distance cyclists. Most of these products aren't intended for general consumption, they are for athletes. The only benefit to eating high levels of protein is post workout anyway, you aren't going to magically build muscle just by upping your protein intake.
There is a whole huge marketing culture built up around theses things, and they are almost entirely pointless for most people.0 -
Depends on what you are looking to get out of them.
Specifically, are you using them as a post-exercise glycogen (energy-muscle repair) restoration tool or a diet supplement?
Without getting into too much science, if you are using them as an energy/glycogen restoration vehicle post-exercise then protein in liquid form combined with carbs 1:4 ratio within 30 minutes is reported by some to be the best most efficient way to restore glycogen stores in ELITE athlete doing prolonged exercise (over 100 min).
If you are using them as protein / fiber supplements to a diet Quest Bars are an excellent choice. For example the Brownie Bar is 170 cal but packs 20 grams of protein and 19 grams of fiber and 1 gram of sugar in the bar. It does have an artificial sweetener (sucralose) but the also make an "all natural" line with Stevia.
Fiber is great for your diet plans, but not as an energy source. Protein prework-out can also divert energy needed for Prolonged >100 min strenuous exercise to digestion.
Bottom line: normal work-outs < 100 min usually don't need protein supplementation if you get enough protein in your diet. However, if you are dieting and working out or doing elite strenuous exercise and need the supplementation the protein in liquid form combined with a bit of carbs shortly after exercise is the most efficient was to go. Solid food (bars) are covienent but take longer to digest. Hope that helps.0 -
I prefer a shake because I can control what I put in it. Protein powder, ice, organic milk, fresh or frozen fruits, organic/natural nut butter & even fresh spinach for a blast of nutrients and very little chemicals or preservatives.
Bars are convenient yes, so it's whatever works for you and whatever you're OK with putting in your body.0
