Losing weight too quickly?

I'm worried that I may be. I started here on January 04th and have lost 18lbs since then. I keep expecting it to plateau as my job hasn't been giving me time to do much besides work and sleep these past few weeks but it hasn't.

I know I've changed what I eat DRASTICALLY (goodbye sweet baked mac and cheese four times a week *sniff*, goodbye alcohol *double sniff*) but is 18lbs too much too soon from primarily diet alone? I expected a significant weight loss for the first couple of weeks given I have quite a bit to lose so I wasn't concerned. But now seven weeks in and still consistantly losing 2 or more pounds a week has made me wonder.

LOL, I'd never thought I'd complain about this, but I started this journey to be healthy, not just to look hot in skinny jeans. I've dubbed 2012 as my year of "Balance" both physically and mentally and I don't want to become as equally fanatical about losing weight as I was about packing it on in the first place. Perhaps I should just quit worrying and focus on how great I feel? LOL, ahhh, but if worrying about things was a full time job I'd be a millionaire and could pay someone else to lose weight for me ;)

Brightest Blessings all.

  • What is your calorie intake now? The only thing I would worry is that you don't drop below 1200. If your calorie intake is very low then you will lose a lot fast but you are likely to gain it back. I have recently experienced a similar weight loss but it was because I dropped my calorie intake and kept exercising on a regular basis. When I looked closely at my diary I noticed that I am consuming WAY to little calories and I have immediately increased my calorie intake. It wasn't easy to do because my body was used to eating less calories but I also knew that sooner or later I will plateau and then will have no room to adjust my calories down.

I always make sure to have at least 1200, most days it's 1300 or more. I eat back 75% of my exercise calories usually.

If so, probably you simply have a body that resets itself easily, so far. Keep eating clean, exercise, eat enough food and that's that. Enjoy the weight-loss, it will help you keep at it. :)

I don't think you have to worry. 2 pounds a week is a healthy amount to lose and the more you have to lose the easier it seems to come off. You will hit a plateu eventually and then you will need to change something up. I say if it isn't broke don't fix it in this case. Good luck in meeting your goals.

Just took a peek at your diary.

Seems like you are eating the appropriate NET calories, so I dont see a problem. You are eating pretty low in fat, which could be the reason? I recently started paying closer attention to my FAT content and noticed I would lose weight quicker due to that.

I wouldnt worry too much as long as you're eating enough.

Take it! I think it's common to lose fast if your eating habits were very bad. It'll taper off.

Maybe all it took was to remove that which your body loved holding onto. Alcohol contains a lot of calories and depending on how much you typically drank, I'd say that could have been contributing to the majority of your weight loss.
If you'd like, you could increase your calories a bit, mayhaps 1500 or 1800. Either way, you'll still be on a reduced calorie diet, losing weight albeit a little slower than at present.

Personally, I wouldn't care about a quick weight loss. But I'd fear I'd become obsessed with it. I have in the past. Wasn't such a wonderful time back then. Right now, I'm trying my best to focus on the health aspect of it all, not the calories/fat.

    Good luck!

I looked at your diary and I don't see that you are doing anything that would be unhealthy. Keep doing what you are doing. Your weight loss rate is normal. You don't have to exercise to lose weight, in fact if you haven't been exercising, then you probably shouldn't start at the beginning of a weight loss program.

If the 1300 (plus exercise calories you're eating) and you aren't hungry, then I say you're doing fine. I did read somewhere though that people on a health track, not drastic diet, should decrease the amount of calories by 500. So, if you had been eating 2000/day, then you should now be eating 1500 calories. THe research I had read was about how a slower, steady pace was better.

    Please note:
I am no expert. I read a lot, but I do not have a degree...or any nutrition/personal training experience.
