  • I have always hated running. :noway:

I mean seriously my mindset has ALWAYS been if i'm running you'd better run to 'cause something scary:devil: is behind me.

Oddly enough, i'm getting interested in the idea:embarassed: . but my knees always hurt when i run and i get short of breath pretty easy.

    so the question is this...

    How does a Non-Runner become a Runner?

    any ideas?

    Please?

Ditto to all advice above about getting the right shoes. Try and rope in a friend or two to start walking/jogging/running with you. Its so much easier to drag yourself out of bed for an early morning run, or motivate yourself to jog back from work or do a 20 minute jog in luchtime, or whatever works for you, if you have a friend to go with and to chat with about your running. Maybe find a beginner friendly event to have as a goal if that helps with motivation too. I started jogging about 8 years ago to support friend who was doing a charity run, I thought I'd just do the one event but after 6 months I was hooked. I don't love very run and sometimes I really don't enjoy it at all but generally its a chance to de-stress, keep fit and you can have a big piece of guilt free cake afterwards! Good luck and enjoy.

I wish you lived closer, we could do this together! I attempted running for the first time last week. When I told my 12 year old he asked why, I said to get healthy. He then got this shocked look on his face and said, "You did this on purpose???"

I have also heard Couch to 5K is great and one of my FB friends mentioned there is an iphone app called beginning running (or something to that effect). I have an android and didn't see one comparable. I am just doing the walk 1 minute, run 30 sec until I can build up my strength.

    Good luck!!

  • I'm with you. I hate running. Hate it. But I like the IDEA of running. I finally (rightfully) convinced myself that running was not the end all, be all of exercise, and I was fine without it. But now I'm trying again because it's the one thing I can get dh to do with me, and I want to be able to say "hey, let's go jog".

Oh, god, do I hate it though. Maybe someday I'll get over that hump. I'll let you know.

Number 1....go to a professional shoe store, get a gait analysis and get fitted for the right shoes.
Number 2....sign up for a 5K and train for it. (Most 5Ks are for a good charitable cause, so it's a win-win.)
Number 3....focus on increasing your TIME instead of your DISTANCE.
Number 4....if you love music, fix up a nice playlist or download some new songs to listen to while you run.
Number 5....download a running app on your phone or buy a GPS/HRM watch. Cool gadgets are always great motivators! :)

I went from not being able to run 90 seconds to being able to run for 13 miles. I started with c25k 6 months ago at 220 pounds. I would definitely start with c25k.

Couch to 5K hasn't just helped me learn to run.... It is the ONLY reason I know how to run!

    I'm on week 4 day 3 tomorrow, I can't wait :)

I hated even the idea of running, but I wanted a full body cardio exercise and I don't have a nearby pool, so I thought running would be practical.

    I love it.

My friend runs over 50 miles a week and when I say run I mean he RUNS full speed. He's awesome. He gave me some good advice when I started jogging. One of the best things he told me was to get knee braces for knee support. I got the ace brand ones at walmart that have a sleeve you stick your leg through. They are $20 each and seriously the best $40 I ever spent on exercise gear. I managed to run a 5k last year and am now training for a 1/2 marathon. Also when you start-start SLOW. Run slow. There's no need to start blasting full speed ahead when you first start. I do a warm up just by walking fast until I am ready to run and then as time has progressed I have started to increase my speed and my time. Get good shoes. Cheap shoes are awful and will not asorb the shock to your knees. I swear by Reebok personally. When me and my husband first started out we could only do 1 minute of running then 5 min of walking. Now we can run a 5k and more. It is doable. You just have to be determined to do it. Control your breathing and that helps prevent stitches. Good luck!!

I wear old track suit bottoms, and a tshirt under a hooded top, it's cold and dark here, so not to fussed atm. But will get some new pair of bottoms soon and hope to wear running shorts of some kind in the summer. Oh but I do wear a proper sports bra, just to make sure every thing stays in place :).

I actually snickered when I read this because my first thought was "clothes?!"

Seriously, I just started but I'm doing this indoors on the treadmill and the most important thing I did, other than buying good shoes fitted at the local runners store, was buy a lock-and-load-hold-em-in-place-no-matter-what bra. Without it, I'd literally knock myself unconscious after about three strides. Other than that, whatever pants/leggings I had laying around and a big old shirt to cover my giant hiney. :noway:

I'm in the middle (week 4) of c25k right now. I am LOVING it And I am not a runner by any means. I felt the exact same way as you (will only run if chased, and even then it would probably depend on the size of the weapon) I can only echo all the advice given here about starting slow, getting GOOD shoes (especially if you are a big girl like me you need good shock absorbers) and going at your own speed.

I downloaded the Robert Ullrey podcasts into my iPod for my c25k series. They are totally free and the music is great! He also comes on and tells you when to run/walk and the music changes tempo for the runs and walks so it helps with pacing. if you google him the c25k website comes up.

Honestly, I haven't had to walk during a run interval yet. I go slow, and I breathe deeply and I just put one foot in front of the other.

I'm also signed up for a 5K the Saturday that my training weeks end. That is totally motivating me!

I was never a runner, I actually use to say I hated running and would never be able to run more than a mile. At 29 rIght before I got pregnant I decided to start running to lose some weight. Honestly, it was pathetic...I could barley make if from electric pole to pole ( I run in the country). I refused to run with anyone b/c I was so embarrassed at my condition (cardio and strength). But every time I went out I made it a mission to go just a tiny bit further. THen I was running every other pole and so on...I was having a lot of back, knee, and feet issues from running. I had my ACL replaced with some of my hamstring a few years ago so I assumed there was nothing I could do. I went to the chiropractor and then helped with the back and feet issues. Someone recommended going to a running shop and getting fitted for the right type of shoe for me and I have not had much problem since. The more in shape I became the less my body issues seemed to get in the way. After having my daughter I am back at it and excited that I am up to 6-7 miles - which I never thought I would see in a million years. I am not out to run any races or marathons...I run for me, it is my therapy! SO whenever I hear someone tell me they will never be a runner...my response is never say never...it is never too late :)

I've always hated running too and then a friend talked me into training for a 10k with her. The Hal Higdon program is great because it varies your activity, not just walking and running like some other programs. I also found the right shoes for me - Nike Airmax 2009. The last factor is a great song list on my ipod - I googled songs for 12 minute mile and then picked the ones I liked. Good luck!

Here is my advice, coming from someone that used to HATE running, and has bad knees. (Countless years of pretty extreme skiing and racing tends to do that). Also had acl replacement and a scope or two..
First invest in the right shoes. Go to a store that specializes in running shoes, they will have the right equipment to figure out the best type of shoe for you. It will make a huge difference. Nothing will put u off more than bad shoes.
Second the couch to 5k program is a break way to get started slowly and get your body used to it.

Third, and I will say, To me, this was a game changer. I was given the book Chi Running. It changed the way I run and my knee issues went away. It basically teaches you how to run "naturally" . Your body knows how to run and if you do it right it shouldn't hurt. It really changed my feelings about running. I still won't say I love it, but I do enjoy it a lot more.

    Good luck..
