What exercises get your heart rate up most?

Need something to add to my alternate days. (:

Roller skating! It's almost as good as running and so much fun!

Dancing too! Just pop some music in and move to the beat.
  • The stair master....I can burn twice as many calories in half the time as the elliptical. But it's soooo hard for me to do more than 15 min.
  • If you or someone you know has access to p90x I love doing one of their cardio workouts. Something like core synergestics or kenpo x...but really any activity that you do that can get your heart rate elevated, 175ish for an extended period of time is great.

HIIT (high intensity interval training) I do 1 minute hard and 2 minutes of recovery and go for 15-20 minutes. My recovery is walking at 4mph 1% incline, my hard is 9 mph at 4-6% incline. The nice thing is that these workouts are short but they SHRED calories like none other. Also, similar to wieght lifitng, your metabolism stays reved up for much longer after you finish your workout than with traditional steady state cardio.

Barbell full squats over 180 lbs. Lower than that and I barely notice an increase in HR.

Hiking uphill in the snow with boots on... sets of 30 lunges holding 20-lb dumb bells... both of those get me up to 170 bpm

Stairs. Actually there's a set of 225 very steep stairs that go from Pacific Coast Highway to the sand in South Laguna Beach known as 1,000 Steps. I can get my heart rate as high as I like there with not alot of effort and meet plenty of people doing the same thing.

One of my favorite places to exercise.

Climbing the stairs non stop for more than 6 minutes! That's my fall back work out! Climbing the 9 floors at my workplace, twice, or in the building where I live, for 15 mins. I dunno if I really burn many calories, but I feel like I would die panting if I do it for more than 15 minutes! :P

At gym: TRX suspension training plank crunches.

At home: Kickboxing or dancing to something like Saturday Night Fever.
