http://www.drugs.com/pro/paragard.html This is the product website. Both abnormal periods AND swelling are possible side effects of Paraguard.

http://www.drugs.com/pro/paragard.html Mirena's info sheet. Pretty much all the same stuff is listed, with the addition of issues related to the hormones in it. Mirena is a completely different thing in that it is hormonal and not just copper.
From that site:
The most common adverse reactions (≥5% users) are uterine/vaginal bleeding alterations (51.9%), amenorrhea (23.9%), intermenstrual bleeding and spotting (23.4%), abdominal/pelvic pain (12.8%), ovarian cysts (12%), headache/migraine (7.7%), acne (7.2%), depressed/altered mood (6.4%), menorrhagia (6.3%), breast tenderness/pain (4.9%), vaginal discharge (4.9%) and IUD expulsion (4.9%).
Other relevant adverse reactions occurring in <5% of subjects include nausea, nervousness, vulvovaginitis, dysmenorrhea, back pain, weight increase, decreased libido, cervicitis/Papanicolaou smear normal/class II, hypertension, dyspareunia, anemia, alopecia, skin disorders including eczema, pruritus, rash and urticaria, abdominal distention, hirsutism and edema.
The following adverse reactions have been identified during post approval use of Mirena: device breakage and angioedema.
(Just a personal aside...you don't need to respond to this, I'm just passing on what I wish someone had told me when I was younger. When choosing any form of birth control you do need to research how it works and decide whether it's right for you. ie If you have any personal convictions about when life begins, etc - make sure you really understand the method you choose. I didn't do that when I was first needing b/c - I just took my doctor's advice, and only four years later realized that the pill he'd put me on didn't actually block ovulation reliably, but mostly just made it so a fertilized egg couldn't implant. It blocked pregnancy, but not conception, and discovering that really crushed me.)0 -
I have Mirena right now and I HATE it. But I just got it inserted in October so I am giving it a good solid 6-7 months and if things dont straighten out I am getting it removed.
The side effects are numerous. Be sure to do the research and read reviews. Among the side effects I personally have seen: Crazy acne (not just on face, but chest and back also), Hair loss (clumps, not just a few strands), ovarian cysts (severe pain), irregular periods (currently 2 per month), flushing (red face).
Sometimes I wonder if the IUD works so well at preventing pregnancy because the significant other cant come near due to the side effects.0 -
HATED my Mirena, LOVE my paraguard. I seriously was having menopause symptoms with the mirena, it was awful. I have a clotting disorder, so I can't take any kind of hormones.0

I have had Mirena for 2 years now, I use it for regulation not b/c. I LOVE it. I rarely if ever have a period, it did take about 6 months for them to get to that point though. I don't have any side effects. When it's time to replace, I plan on getting it again.0

I have the Paraguard, it's made my periods very, very heavy but I've never had any issues other than that. Unless I'm really messing around with my diet and limiting calories it's pretty clock-work every month.
Did you have issues with it before? Or are these new?0 -
I am on to my second Mirena and I swear by them. No periods or pain but still have other monthly cycle symptoms.0

this is my second one the first one fell out and i got pregnant but we were also using condoms as well and it broke... this is my first time that it caused all this0
