How "big" is "too big" for a bikini?

Hey everyone! With summer coming I have to wonder what size do you guys think is too big for a bikini? My goal is to feel comfortable in one this summer but I know what I might feel comfortable in might not make everyone else comfortable looking at it :p

I'm 5'5" with a medium/ larger frame (I definitely have noticeable butt/boobs). Any suggestions on what size you think I should aim for?

Thanks!

I would just concentrate on the size that makes YOU feel good and comfortable, screw everyone else's opinion as no matter what, there are always critics out there.

Too big for a bikini would be if you arent comfortable with your body image. It's very much a personal choice. I feel i am way to big for a bikini but i totally plan to rock one as soon as i can. For me, that size would be to not have a spare tire around my mid section with muffin top haha. I dont think ill be there completely this summer, but who knows. A tankini will prob be in my future this summer.
  • I am 42 and have never worn one in my entire life. I am "thinking" of wearing one this summer. I just "squeezed" into my size 8 jeans, lol. A particular size is not what I look at. For me, personally, it's whether or not there will be big rolls hanging out everywhere. :)

I used to work in a bathing suit store - I've seen EVERYTHING!! To be honest, if you feel comfortable in a bikini, then go ahead and wear one! There is no specific size that is "right" for a bikini - everyone's body is different. It might cost a little more, but if you go to a specialty swimsuit store you will get great customer service and they'll help you find a swimsuit (bikini or otherwise) that suits your body.

Remember, when you put on a bathing suit you automatically look at the things you don't like about yourself....but most of the time, other people don't notice those "imperfections" that you see. Everyone from a size 0 to a size 28W has imperfections that they notice on themselves - believe me, I heard EVERYTHING when I worked at a swimsuit store!

I'm also 5'5 and have a medium to large frame. I got a butt but no really boobs to speak off. I agree with everyone else, find something that makes you feel comfortable and ROCK IT!!!!!

This! Although when I go to to the beach, I am so surprised to see some of the people, young and old with bikinis. I wish I had their mirrors. I can't imagine what they see when they look at themselves?

I think it's more a matter of feeling comfortable and wearing a flattering bikini that fits, no matter what your size.

A bikini that doesn't fit right - doesn't cover enough, isn't supporting enough, or cuts into the flesh - isn't flattering on anyone no matter what their size.

    I'm 5'4, 145lbs..... 43 years old.

As long as you love yourself in it, that is all that matters.... Do YOU, boo boo. :flowerforyou:

I think if you put it on and it looks good to you.. then it was meant to be. The way you see yourself is probably worse than what other people see. I think I look huge, but whenever I told my best freind what I weighed when I started she said that I did not look that heavy to her and she was really surprised. I know I am my worst critic, so if I approve of myself in something, then it was meant to be.

The choice is up to you. If you feel confident enough to wear one go for it.

I would just say whatever you feel best at. I definitely see people who should NOT be wearing one, but most of them are like sizes 14 and up. But, if they are confident, go them!

Wear whatever the heck you want whenever the heck you want to. You don't need us to tell you it's okay.

As everyone else has said-whatever YOU are comfortable in! Who cares what everyone else will think? The way I see it, we're at the beach to have a good time not worry about who has on what and why. Anyone that has time to do so is lame. Put on your bikini and have a blast!!

There are some people who are a size 14 and are toned and look good in bikinis...but you're right, some size 14 girls wouldn't look good in a bikini (me being one of them!!)

Also keep in mind that bathing suits always run smaller than your clothing size - so don't be discouraged if you have to go a size or two above your regular pants size. Another thing to keep in mind is that bathing suits will ALWAYS stretch about 1/2 - 1 size bigger than they start out. So if it's a bit snug when you buy it, wear it around your house a few times to stretch it out and it'll be perfect by the time you want to head to the beach with it! I learned a lot working in a bathing suit store!! LOL

I think it's how good you look in it.

Like me and my friend. She's 5'8" size 14 US, but her tummy is flat as a board (yeah, its not muscle, but her fat deposit there is completely even), so she looks fine in one.

Now I'm 5'7" and smaller than she is (size 6 US) and I still have a couple more pounds to go before I think I'm comfortable in one. I have the "Kardashian" stomach, little pockets of fat. But hey it's almost all gone, just got to keep working at it.

It's all what works for you.

I would love to wear a bikini. I'm 55 and nothing would make me happier. I don't think I would wear it to the beach or pool. My skin is not in good enough shape to wear that little material.. so I wear bikini skirts over my large hips and thighs...
It is what you feel comfortable in, I have seen many women in bathing suits that I didn't feel were appropriate.
Remember looking good does not always mean less clothing.

go for it. i wore one last summer for the first time ever, and i was no where near my goal weight. i still have a long way to go, but my confidence is on the up and up and it was lovely to feel so much sunshine! anyone who says you aren't bikini worthy is not worth listening to.

I live close to Little Odessa in Brooklyn. Ladies of ALL shapes, ages & sizes wear bikinis - they are happy with THEMselves.

It depends. If you feel comfortable and confident in a bikini, you're going to look fabulous. If you're not comfortable and confident, you're probably not going to look good (unless you're a bikini model). Also, fit is SO important. A good fitting bikini that flatters your body type can work for almost anybody. I'm thicker in the hips and thighs, and the way my bottoms fit makes a huge difference. A too-small bottom or one that's not a good "shape" for me easily makes me look 10 lbs. heavier.
  • Ok... so the "PC" answer is: if you are comfortable in it, then you are good... however my honest answer is this:
Take a good friend, an HONEST friend, with you shopping for one. Honestly many body types can pull off a bikini if it's the right one for their body. Get an "outside" opinion from that friend once you find one worth showing them. I have seen others in a bikini that was sooooo not meant for them, but then again, could see someone a bit bigger who totally rocked it - it's all on the make and how it contours you. Sometimes when you have that 2nd set of eyes there to confirm it, knowing they are honest eyes, it also helps your confidence before your public debut :) This is what I advised to another friend, a RL friend, and she thanked me, so hoping it helps

personally i would say that if your bmi says you are overweight, you should not wear one. or if you are above size 16. Thats just my opinion.

It depends on how you feel about yourself. I'm 5'11 and I like all my other parts, but I hate my stomach so I wouldn't feel comfortable in a bikini. My sister is 5'11 also and is 160 pounds all muscle and looks great in a bikini but she's a size 8. My other friend is 5'11 and weighs 190, size 16, but she has a larger frame and looks great. Her stomach is flat and she just has a lot of boobs and butt, but still looks great.

If YOU want to wear a bikini and YOU like how you look in it, then YOU should wear one. If others don't agree they don't have to look.

I agree with this..... me: medium/large frame 5' 2"... big butt, small breast..i think size doesnt matter in a binkin..more like tone texture.....because i've seen some large large women in binikins but no cellulite or flabby stomachs and they look fine.
