Ok for the last month i cant sleep more than about 6 hrs a night. This is coming from someone that could sleep for 8-12 hrs a night before i started really loosing weight. Is it the extra energy from the weight loss? It doesn't matter if i have been to the gym once or two times a day still at 5-6am i am wide awake.....Like right now.

I don't know the answer but I'm interested. I too do not need nearly as much sleep as some. Mostly I sleep 6-7 hours a night (often broken sleep) and am fine. Yet many others seem to need a lot more.0

i even sleep less than that most the time and nothing helps0

I have a lot more energy since going to the gym 3 times a week. I used to need a nap after work or the gym and now I can stay up quite late.
I was set on laying in today (saturday is the only day I don't have to be out of bed by a certain time) but I woke up on the dot at 8am. I had to force myself back to sleep.0 -
I dunno, I think more than 5-6 hours of sleep in a row isnt natural. I always feel better and more rested with about 5 hours and a quick 20 min nap during the day.0

Same here. For me it happened when I started doing vigorous strength training workouts 3-4 times a week. When doing only cardio I had no problem.
I took a week's break from strength training and my sleep schedule became more or less normal.
(i also made a topic few weeks back. didn't get many replies though http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/495510-unable-to-sleep-overtraining-or-bad-exercise-scheduling)0 -
I sleep only 3-4 hours of broken sleep a night. This has been going on for years now. I take a mild sleep medication but it does not help. My doctors will not give anything stronger because I have a tracheostomy and take oxygen at night. They are overly concern (in my opinion) that because these stronger sleep meds will slow down my respiration that they could be lethal. I lost 113 pounds since 1 June 2011 and often exercise in the middle of the night. I too thought my sleep would get better as I lost the weight and exercised. But it hasn't. Any suggestions?0

For me it has been that way for as long as I can remember. I do not think of this as abnormal. When I get really tired (like a cold coming on), I might go to bed two hours early but at most, I will only get an extra hour of sleep.0 -
This is strange to me, because I'm the opposite. I used to not be able to sleep more than 4 hours, and since I've been losing weight I've needed more! Up to about 9 hours to feel fully refreshed, though I feel 9 hours is a long time. I hope I'm not doing something wrong here. :indifferent:0

Me too! It sucks!!! Off to the gym at 430 am! What else would a sane person do???0

used to worry me then I thought, if I aint tired, then I don't need sleep, so I stopped worrying. If I didn't get more than 4 to 6 hours I knew I'd sleep the clock round eventually and catch up. Then I found this news item......

which I thought gave a really useful insight!0 -
I am the same way. I average 4 - 6 hours a night.
I consider it a blessing. I'm not tired. I have more energy. I get to have longer days and enjoy more time and make up for some of the hours I lost due to being so lethargic in the past.

Bump...
Continuous sleep for me 2-3 hours a night.
Got back on the sleeping tablets ... helped me increase that a little or at least ensure got another 2-3 hours before morning.
Trying relaxation mp3s, position myself according to the rising, midday and setting sun so my body clock may re-synch. bananas, supps and warm milk .... all the above together are prob safe .
Breathing techniques can work too. Let me know please.0 -

That's a great article. Thanks for sharing.0 -
I have the same problem. I get about 4-6 hours of sleep, wake up early, then crash in the late afternoon when I get home.0

When I started living different over a year ago, I could sleep constantly. After a bit of changing I noticed I was going to bed about 9-10 pm and was wide awake at 2-3 am. Just couldn't sleep anymore. I functioned just fine on that amount of sleep. I chalked it up to being on the diet pill Adipex, which is a huge energy boost. But after talking to my dr. just to be sure, she offered a sleep aid to help put me at rest at night. I opted out bc quite frankley, I am already on 2 other rx meds and had started the Adipex, take a multi-vitamin, plus 3 other natural supplements. Another pill was just to much for me. It turned out w/o the Adipex, my sleep habits were still the same. I am sure it is just your body changing and your metabolism is different. Your whole body (including your mind and sleep habits) are going through a lot of changing. You shouldn't really question the amount of sleep. That varies from person to person. You should look at how your body is responding to the amount of sleep. Are you waking up and energized or is your body rested but mentally you still feel tired? Is your body still tired but your mind wide awake? Are you crashing later? If the amount is affecting you, try modifying other things. Try not excersicing after 3 pm., not eating past 6 pm, making yourself take a 30 min power nap sometime during the day. Remember that rest and complete relaxation (including your mind) is key to being healthy to. Even just stopping for 15 min twice a day and tuning EVERYTHING out helps set your body in a different state. If nothing helps then I would see my dr. If you are functioning fine, then I wouldn't change it. I just wanted to offer up my advice. I don't know it all but just wanted to try to help.0

Has anyone found it might be related to their age and getting older?
I'm asking because both my husband and I have been having sleep troubles lately and we've been trying to figure out why.
We have lots of theories, but I've been wondering if part of it is age related - we're early 40s and mid 40s. I've heard people naturally need less sleep as they age, but when does that start?
Op - Our sleep troubles are a combo of stress and some mild depression and anxiety, and possibly age related (?). Melatonin has worked well for me, and my husband takes some kind of sleep meds that his doc is trying for him. Also, sleep apnea can be a culprit. Or, like others said, it could just be some sort of natural change in your body. For me, if I don't get around 7-8 hours most nights, I have trouble during the day - tired, trouble running, cranky. But if you aren't being affected, maybe it's not anything to worry about?0 -
Before I started working out consistently (and I made some other significant changes), I slept a lot. I mean A LOT! I don't think it's cause my body needed rest, I think it's because my brain needed to get away.
Once I moved out and really started focusing on my health - it all started falling into place. I do sleep less and I'm completely surprised that I feel so much better on 6-7 hours sleep than I did after 12.
I wonder, if after so many years of sleeping our lives away - and looking at the big picture, we've only been doing this for a few months. . . maybe it just takes time to level everything out?
Just my thoughts . . .0 -
I have only really been working out and eating healthier for the past two weeks...and for the past two weeks I have been having broken sleep. I go to bed around 10, I wake up pretty much every night at 2 and then again at 4 (sometimes more) and finally I get up at 6. Not sure what's going on!0

Maybe im just jacked up on mountain dew...oh dont drink that....lol I think my energy level has increased greatly and that has attributed to lack of excessive sleeping. Plus i am single and dont have anyone to wear me out.0

you're welcome. Hope you don't mind if I add your as a friend?0

I hope not, I'm 28!
There must be some theory out there somewhere0
