No, you guys. See these veggies? See this full fat yogurt?
I am not on a fad diet.
I am not restricting my calories.
I am *counting* them. I am *making note* of what the heck I am putting in my body.
I am getting a healthy amount of exercise every day and keeping track of how much that is.

Why is that so unsettling?

I find that a lot of times dieting makes the people around you uncomfortable so they project their own insecurity onto you and attack it.

I get the same thing from my mom. She calls me anorexic! It can be frustrating and hurtful to have people act this way when you have made a positive change in your life. Sometimes, these people are just jealous of our success! Good luck!

I've also received "don't become anorexic!" It is VERY hurtful and VERY misinformed. But i'm not going to let it make me fall short of my own goals! Good luck to you to, btw that dress looks fantastic on you!

Give the people who love you a break. Remember, they love the body you hate a lot more than you do.

  • This is the reason I joined MFP in the first place. Support. I need like minded people who understand what I am trying to do and can be a shoulder to cry on if I come up short. To those who don't understand or who can't get over their own insecurities...long walk, short pier.

At my job, I receive constant comments regarding how I refuse to eat cake, pies, candy, etc. My place of employment always have a reason to celebrate something with fattening food. People are aware that I have made a major lifestyle change and yet still my food choices strange. I often play it off but there are moments when I feel self conscious about it.

Nonetheless, I refuse to let the opinions of others dictate my life choices.

Work is the worst! Everyone is so used to junk food as a reward they become utterly confused when you don't want to eat pure sugar. You look awesome though :3
  • What is it with people. I said I wanted to loose 2 stone which will bring me to my ideal weight and all I have is "Don't be silly" or "you'll be skin and bone" and "That weight won't suit you!" Arghhhhhhh:grumble:

The only person who does this to me is my mother-in-law... not surprising at all.

Anyway, do your thing... don't let what people say bother you one bit. It's your body, your life.

I got told the other day not to take it too far by the women I share my office with. She was concerned I getting too thin and not eating enough despite the fast that I'm often at my desk munching through a bag of veg/fruit/meat/nuts! We had discussed what we ate as she was trying to lose some weight.

    My general day
Breakfast - scrambled egg/omelette + spinach and mushrooms, plus some nuts some times
Lunch - salad or raw veg (one or two tupperware tubs) plus some meat - either chicken breast, tin of tuna or mackerel
Dinner - some meat, plate full of veg and sweet potato
Plus some handfuls of nuts or spoonfuls of nutbutter plus some berries as a snack

    Her normal day
    Breakfast - instant porridge
    Lunch - instant porridge
    Dinner - tin of soup

Apparently I'm the one that may have an problem with my food!

I have the same issue all the time and especially because my goal weight is slightly lower than what most people would aim for! I've stopped mentioning it to friends because all I get is 'oh that's way too low' 'you're going to look awful' and those kind of comments. Just keep in mind why you are doing this and who you are doing it for (yourself!!). I have to remind myself all the time that I'm doing this for my fitness and so I can keep doing all my sporting activities without my knees hurting. Also I now have some awesome friends on MFP that are super supportive and motivating. Try to ignore the jealous ones :)

At this point my family isn't changing so I deal with it. My friends are all triathletes so they get it. Just became natural to surround myself with people as crazy as I am.

I get this from my mom all the time.
She even hints at the fact that my husband wont like me so skinny. My husband is happy with me and it is none of her business.

Probably that those who are not supportive and even critical are being faced with their own not so healthy choices. Many dont like change, even if others. I am grateful to have a supportive family who respects my choice to become healthy (not necessarily skinny). When I am at a dinner or such and dessert is offered or just junk in general, IF I am being pushed I tell them it makes me sick (which it does, just not in the way they assume) for whatever reason they back down much faster, quicker to let it go.

Surrounding yourself with like minded people will support you and keep you on track.
Losing weight was a bit like quitting smoking... my choice in friends had to change. When I quit smoking I could no longer hang out with my smoking pals, almost the same with losing weight. I've been maintaining since November 2011. Most of my friends are marathoners, triathletes and generally people that are as fitness crazy as I am. So they understand where I'm coming from and my eating habits are similar to theirs.
At work it's a different story. I have people coming to me asking if I'm ill! You're too thin, you should go eat a hamburger! This is hurtful. Why is okay for a fat person to tell a thin person that they are too thin, go eat a burger. If I said you're too fat don't eat the burger, I'd be slammed for being insensitive! After listening to this for 5 months I'm about to blow!!!!
  • My ex used to call me anorexic, and people all the time tell me, "Oh, you don't need to lose weight! Eat something!"

So annoying. I'm trying to eat relatively healthy and firm up, not necessarily going for numbers on the scale but if they drop I'm not going to complain.

Stop trying to feed me junk food!

I've been dealing with this for years, so I'm used to just brushing it all off and doing what I want/need to do.

When i mention that I still want to lose 40 more pounds to get to my final goal which 140 at 5'7" doesn't seem to crazy to me at all. Under all this fat I am very thin naturally and when I was younger I maintained 125 they tell me I am fine and that I should stop.

Same thing with my work, every payday they have some sort of buffet or bbq or bake sale on top of everyone always going out to eat. They look at me like I am the crazy one for bringing my lunch and eating a sensible portion while they mack down on a huge plate of nachos.

I never know about these threads. One one hand, I'm like "Yeah, screw those people!" then on the other I'm like "Well, what if you actually do have a problem with food and people are legitimately concerned?" But either way, to each his own. I feel like the line between food problem and food management depends a lot on the individual.

Yesterday, I was in the dining hall and they had this board in the shape of a tombstone for Eating Disorder Awareness week. There were post-it notes all over it from people who were deciding to "lay to rest" their unhealthy behaviors related to food and weight. One post was: "RIP, exercising just to burn calories!" Well, at the moment, I had just come from a two hour gym stint that focused on cardio, with the aim of burning calories.. so, do I have an eating disorder? I say no. So, depends on the person.

I have the option for free lunch at work every day but I choose to bring my own food anyway so I can track calories better and can be assured that everything isn't doused in butter. Usually it's not an issue but it seems that Fridays (when the non-managerial staff also gets free lunch) I get criticized for not partaking in the free offerings. The worst is the monthly staff meeting where we also celebrate birthdays. You'd think I insulted someone's mother by refusing a slice of cake.
