Pre-Surgery (not bypass) Liquid Diet

Hi guys:

I'm having a surgical procedure done in a little over a month, and the Doctor had indicated he wanted me to have a liquid diet for at least 2 days prior to the surgery.

So I'm here looking for suggestions for things I can "drink" to get me at least somewhat close to 1200 calories. I have whey protein powder, and if I'm allowed fruit, I plan to liquify some frozen fruits, but looking for other ideas too.

Thanks!

As a snack food or rarely a meal replacement, I buy the Jamba Juice All Natural smoothie packets. You add apple juice to it and blend for a ready-to-drink smoothie. They run about 200-250 calories per smoothie with juice and all.

Sometimes when I need extra protein I toss in two scoops of a neutral pure whey protein mix and cut the apple juice to 50/50 with water to account for some of the extra calories. I also will toss a few flax seeds in for a omega 3 boost.

In the YUM category, I saw someone here had posted a shake recipe:

The basics are: 1/2 cup cottage cheese & 1 scoop protein powder. Then add between 1/2 to 1 cup water and about 10 ice cubes and blend!

I was disbelieving but OMG!!!! I used a 100% Whey protein powder I have here in Chocolate Peanut Butter and this was fantastic! So frothy and tasty and too thick for a straw even!

The original poster mentioned xanthan gum for a thickener but it doesn't need it.

I had a double one of these yesterday when I ran out of time trying to cook up a new concoction before I headed out for work.

Your doctor should have given you some more information about what this constitutes. You need to make sure if he means a liquid diet or a clear liquid diet and that really depends on the type of surgery you are having. I would contact your doc and confirm before trying things such as liquidised fruit as this can still contain pips and fibre etc which may the exact things he wants to avoid.

    Wishing you well

Ok, since four month ago I had a bariatric procedure, I had to be on a liquid diet ten days before the surgery, ten days after and three more day each month after that. Before the surgery I also was allowed one cup of veggy daily. Here you go: protein shakes, juices, consome, farina, buttermilk (just watch the callories), cream-soups (light),fat-free hot chocolate, vegetable juices, skim ( skim plus) milk, baby food (fruits, vegetables, meat)...
Good luck and Congrats with your wonderful waight loss!

I like Athlete's Honey Milk Light... You can get them from Amazon or their web-site. I too had surgery and keep on on hand (even now) in case I need a quick meal or just to keep my protein numbers for the day. 150cals for 20g of protein... They are the best "ready-made" drinks I have tried.

Medi-fast has a bunch too, those you have to make tho. The onest that I've tried have been good... Even their "powdered eggs" (to keep in mind for after) were wonderful.

Unjury has been recommended to me as well, from the Dr.'s office... I've purchased some of their products but haven't had a chance to try them yet.

    Good Luck

    Thanks guys.

Planning on calling the Dr.'s office on Monday (still have some paperwork I need to fill out for insurance, oh fun!) so I'll try and get more specifics at that point, as to whether it' straight liquid, clear liquid, and if there's any restrictions on fruit/veggies/etc.

if it's all liquids - puddings, ice creams, broth, tomato soup, cream soups if they have the chunks strained out, milk, hot cocoa... and all of the clear liquids I listed below:

if it's just CLEAR liquids - chicken or beef broth made from boullion cubes/packets, jello, cranberry juice, apple juice, Italian ice, coffee, tea (dissolving sugar is fine but don't add cream), sodas...

I very recently had surgery and had to do the liquid routine. However, it was emphasized to me that it was to be CLEAR fluids. I used juices and broths. Oh, Jell-O was considered a clear liquid. So...you may want to double-check on that.

Oops...posted this before reading very many of the comments. I see ppl have already got your back! :blushing:
