I have been doing this for about a month now (along with prescribed diabetes/weight loss med) and have only lost about 2lbs. I am constantly under my caloric goal (1500) and exercising regularly. I was reading several post stating that if your net (after exercise) if less then the caloric goal that you would not lose any weight. Is this right am I not eating enough? I'll give an example..Right now my intake for the day is 1334, I lost 680 exercising, and it states my net is 654. If you're supposed to eat back the calories that you lost exercising what's the point in exercising to begin with?

  • Your body thinks you are starving it, and will hold on to everything. Eat to your calories everyday. Fat is good for you, just eat the right type of fat. Nuts, avocado, etc.

You are starving yourself, eat and lose.

Because the 1500 goal is already a deficit. Exercising on top of that expands the deficit, often to unlealthy ranges that your body will resist, thereby slowing your weight loss (and your basic bodily functions).

Eat most of your calories back and you'll find you feel better, too.

Alright thank you! I wish i had of realized this sooner. I have only been using my app on my phone and just got on the website today for the first time and realized this.
  • I don't know the science behind MFP, but I know it works! Eat the calories you burn! I always eat my calories, honestly, it is the only thing that keeps me exercising is that I can have extra food (1200 is not much). And, I have the proof that it works because since I joined MFP just over a month ago, I have lost 10 pounds! I don't feel deprived AT ALL! This is a lifestyle, not a diet.

Hi deejayy89 -- I can't see your diary so not sure what you are eating but here are a few tips that worked for me.

Cals are total don't eat more for exercise
Watch your sodium you may just be retaining a lot of water (and if you are diabetic then it is really important to stay under 2000 per day on sodium)
    Keep carbs under control
Eat at least 80 grams of protein per day
Anything around 1200 is fine, you are not in "starvation" mode. Do yourself a favor and do an internet search on reputable sites and see what a farce they think that whole concept is.
    Take your multivitamin

BTW - i assume you have discussed with and MD or nutritionist since you are on diabetes meds but if not, please do. They can certainly offer better advice then anyone on this site.

It just depend on what your body type is whether that is true or not. You should eat to 1500 calories, the minimum though. I am at 1200 and I get that message if I eat 1199 and below no matter what exercise I do. Once you get into a regular swing it will be okay. Just stay positive and goal focused. I joined MFP while I was working with my lap band, I would jump around in weight. Now I have my band open (no restriction) and am working on my last 40 from the 113lbs already lost before MFP. It takes me about a month before I start really dropping especially going from sedintary for a couple months to kicking tail.
Keep positive no matter what, focus on feeling better. ;0)
