Granny Smith Apples

I was going through all my fruits this morning and when i got to the granny smith apples i realized that there are 25 grams of sugar in every apple. Umm my sugars dont really allow for that kind of heavily dosed sugary things, but on the other hand im not too well versed in the difference between fruits and such and things like candy. I like eating apples all the time for in between meals to keep my hunger at bay. Is it okay to go over my sugars for the day as long as i eat healthy sugars like from fruits and such?

Unless you're diabetic, I personally think it's fine. My 8 year old will eat 2 to 3 apples a day. I let him.0

Its a freakin apple! Eat up, its natural sugar!0 -
since I started, I have ALWAYS gone over on sugars, usually from fruits. I have lost a lot of weight from doing this. I dont eat the candies, or juice or soda, but I will have fruit. I am no nutritionist, but logically, if it grows in nature, I am probably set up to process it better.0

natural sugar is totally different from candy with sugar.0

I love Granny Smith apples. I as tracking my sugar but changed it to something else. I hate that it counts the natural sugar from fruit.0

Haha, i just haven't done much research as to the difference between natural sugars and the others. Thanks for the advice!0 -
I only like Granny Smith apples. I was eating one every day. I have cut back a little but mostly so I don't get sick of eating them.0

This...except mine is a 2 year old and a her!0 -
Apples have a ton of fiber which slows down your body digesting the sugar. Completely different from candy. Eat your whole fruit and don't worry about the sugar.0

I wouldn't worry too much about sugar from fruit. It will definitely cause you to go WAY over everyday on here but if that's where most of your sugar comes from you're doing good.0 -
The registered dietitian I talked to recommended that no more than 5-15% of a person's total daily calories come from *added* sugar (candy, cookies, ice cream, soda, etc). For me, that's 25-75g of added sugar... on top of all the naturally occurring sugars in fruit, veggies, milk, etc. For me personally, MFPs base setting for sugar is way too low! I went in and manually changed my goal to something more realistic. Then when I realized there was no good way to differentiate added/natural sugar in MFP, I just stopped tracking it altogether. Eat that apple, and don't worry too much about sugar unless you have a metabolic reason for needing to do so (diabetes, PCOS, etc)0

I think it's totally fine, enjoy your apple. But I like to treat my snacks like mini meals, so I would balance the sugar/carbs with some protein. Maybe some low fat string cheese or something.0

If you eat the apple with something like a protein/fat then even diabetics can eat them no problem!0 -
You're not the only one that has wondered about this. I love my fruit and freaked out when I saw all of the sugar! But I'm the same as the others fruit sugar has got to be different than candy sugar. I hope.0

I had a similar question too... I don't eat any "bad" sugars but always high or over on the sugar value from eating a fair bit of fruit.
I read something recently, which questions the use of tropical fruits (sorry apples not included in this discussion):

As long as you keep within your carbohydrate allowance for the day, I guess any high GI foods (with regard to fruits) that affect your blood sugar levels are ok in moderation.0 -
I think you're fine. I eat an apple (I prefer Gala or Honey Crisp) before I work out for a little extra something in my stomach and some extra energy. I'm over my sugar almost every day just from eating an apple and some greek yogurt, so I don't worry too much about it. A few servings of fruit a day are almost always going to push you over the "sugar limit" set on MFP, but I don't think anyone will tell you a bit of fruit every day is bad for you
Plus, apples are super good for you!0 -

My diabetic son can eat whatever he wants. He boluses for the amount of carbs he eats, and goes on.0 -

Sugar intake is VERY important for Type II diabetics.0 -

I have PCOS and am insulin resistant and the fruit sugars I still try to keep down, but I do have a smoothie every morning and usually some fruit for a snack and still go over, so I quit tracking it, even with the insulin resistance, I still lose weight if I eat fruit. If I eat a cookie though, I am up the next weigh in......0 -
fruit is fine. it is the bad sugar from junk food that you should worry about. I am a diabetic and I have noticed that the totals for my carbs on MFP are too low so I don't pay much attention to it. I am a clean eater so I know that I have nothing to worry about and you shouldn't either if your sugars all come from good, clean, natural places like fruit and veg.0

sugar from fruit is fine - but still bad for our teeth so if its a new thing for you mabey brush a few extra times0

i think natural suagr to stabilaze your blood suagr is wayyy better then not eating sugary things and then letting your blood sugar drop so you binge on all those candys.
and an Appele makes you quiete full and satisfied.0 -
Yep, I too was shocked by the cals and sugar of the seemingly safe, green apple. MFP is set conservatively low on sugar and protein and I exceed it's limits nearly every day. The key is the calorie war, plain and simple. If you have heart or hypertension issues, and or are diabetic or are a threat to become diabetic, that's an entirely different issue. I have also begun eating Fiber One 90 calorie bars -- fantastic taste, low calories and the fiber is always helpful when your battling calories.0

I wouldnt worry about the sugars from fruits and veggies. Its the processed sugar you should be worried about0

That makes good sense, my son has type 1 diabetes. It bothers me a lot when people don't know the difference between the two, and stereotype all "diabetics". That is why I asked. Thx.0 -
If you are insulin resistant, the sugar from fruit matters. Some fruits have more sugar (and different types of sugar) than others.0

I am insulin resistant and was really hoping the sugar in fruit wasn't bad Why does it matter? I thought it was the carbs that your body couldn't deal with?0 -
sugar is sugar. your body is going to process it as sugar weather its from an apple or a candy bar.
sugar is a carb though. and fruits tend to also have good stuff like vitamins and fiber. so its more beneficial/nutritious.
as long as you dont go over on carbs as well i think your fine though.0 -
You need to look at the benefits of pectin....google it!
Basically there is research which says eat an apple with every meal :-)0 -

Fruit sugar is FAR better than other forms, even for those who are insulin resistant. The added fiber really helps, so don't peel your apples.0
