"Unwich" rant

I'm not even a real "low carber", I just make a point to eat more meals as salads, tear off most bread from my Subway sandwiches, not eat the croutons/crackers, and basically get rid of the extra calories I would glean from these sources. I'm not against a burger or pizza every once in a while (i.e. I'll eat the whole thing if given the chance), but on weekdays for lunch, I try to minimize the extra calories I would get from those bready/carby sources, and concentrate more on the proteins/vegetables to keep my macros straight.
Now, I am seriously sympathizing with the gluten-sensitive and the people that really do go the extra mile to try to watch their carbs, because sometimes it's like pulling teeth getting a restaurant to listen to your order...
Case in point:
I looked at the Jimmy John's website since one just opened up near my job. They luckily have a nutrition calculator so you can see exactly what you're ordering. They have an "unwich" option... a lettuce-wrapped sandwich instead of on bread, which they wrap in paper in such a way that you can eat it without a fork and knife, much like their typical sandwich fare. I added up the cals and placed the order for a turkey tom unwich with all the veggies, then went to pick it up.
When I get back to my desk and open it, it's a regular sandwich, with a big loaf of chewy bread -____-;
They're so used to making the bread-based sandwiches that it's just automatic to them... I didn't really blame them, but still...
...and no, I didn't think to check it before I left, but I will next time.
I'm getting a free one tomorrow because I (politely) called and told them what happened, which is great and all, but I had to chunk the bread away and just scoop up the veggies and meat like a usual salad :<
Just sayin'. Many people look at you funny when you tell them you don't want crackers or dressing or if you opt for the low-carb version of anything. There's some weird look on the employee's face like you're obsessive or something. XD
Bread is my weakness and I find it quite delicious in its many vast forms, but I definitely notice a difference when I make sure only to eat it in moderation. Probably has a lot to do with the calorie count as well (some would say only the calories matter, not the carbs... this may be true, but that argument is not the point of this post.).
For those who do try to lessen their carbs, how happy will you be when restaurants and people in general get more accustomed to the low-carb side of things?
That's all ^^;

ugh, that is annoying. I eat a gluten free/ grain free diet and people give me strange looks when I ask for no bun or no bread. Its not that I am really tempted by the items if I get them, but if my burger has bread stuck to it from me peeling it off then I usually get a stomach ache. No fun. I love restaurants that have some gluten free options, not so many strange looks!0

I was pretty proud of myself that, despite the mishap, I actually threw the bread away.
.... except for a tiny bite, of course.0 -
Be sure you order the right thing, they also have an option that has the bread scooped out from the inside.
I made this mistake the first time I ordered delivery from JJ's0 -
I FREAKING LOVE CARBS!0

I have never been a big bread/bun fan and have always peeled it off long before I'd ever heard of "low carb" or "gluten free". My daughter is gluten free so most of our foods at home are too but eating out is definitely trickier! We went to a favorite taco place over the weekend and you'd have thought my daughter and I had grown two heads when I placed my order. I asked for a "taco salad, no shell" and ordered a side of corn chips to stir in. The woman first laughed at me (no kidding!) then just stood there staring at me for a minute. Finally I told her we couldn't do gluten and that spurred her to actually make my darn salad. I love, love, love places that already have accommodations made on the menu!0

My son in law has Celiac and went to In N Out, which has the protein style option where the burger is wrapped in lettuce leaves instead of a bun. He ordered that, and then asked them to make sure that the grill be scraped off prior to his meat being cooked so there wouldn't be any residue from a bun being heated on it. The order taker said "but our buns are made from sponge dough". As if this somehow made it so it wouldn't be a problem .
I wonder if he thought they were made from actual sponges :laugh:0 -
I ask for no croutons on my salad all the time...no one ever bats an eye.0

Just be grateful you can still eat the insides, I would have had to toss the whole thing because of CC0

I don't know if you have a hardees or carla Jr around you but they can "low carb" any sandwhich I'm with you on the bread I'm not low carb but I minimize where I can they make me retain water like crazy if I go overboard on processed or sugary carbs0

Jimmy Johns has an Unwich (no bread) option for every single sandwich they sell. I'd say they are pretty accustomed to the low-carb side of things.
They made a mistake. They gave you a free sandwich. It was an inconvenience to you for sure. But their mistake has nothing to do with Jimmy Johns not being accustomed to the low-carb side of things.
Why do people's food choices so often seem to come with a side of shoulder chips?0 -

this is sage advice. i lost 6 pounds when i chose to let go of my shoulder chips. as it turns out, they are quite heavy.0 -
This thread reminds me. I need to try a sandwich at Jimmy Johns. With scrumptious nummy chewy bread.0
