Even if you don't care about cancer, sun damage ages you. If you tan, you are trading looking good now for looking awful later--wrinkles, blotchy skin, etc. It's not a trade I'd want to make.

AGREED!!! Too many family members and friends have died from skin cancer. It's not worth it. I'm extremely pale yet I still wear SPF50 and A BIG HAT and long sleeves whenever I'm outside. Sometimes people call me "The Ghost", and I LOVE it. SUN also AGES you much faster.

It seems you really want more color. I agree with the numerous other posts that recommend the self-tanning lotions. The new self-tanning products are SO MUCH BETTER than they used to be. Jergens and Neutragena both make great ones that slowly build up a nice normal color.

Tanning beds are DANGEROUS!!! Professional spray tans are great if you find a good place that does it, but please think long and hard (and do research on reputable websites or call dermatologists' offices) before you use a tanning bed / tanning station.

try tanning moderately - make sure you don't burn. tanning is good for vitamin D so you get the benefits of your calcium.
  • Tanning isn't that horrible. Try it out and see how you like it. Take it slowly. Don't burn yourself because that is when you increase your chance of skin cancer. take it slowly. Go somewhere with knowledgable staff and start off with a lower amount of minutes. The tan will gradually come.

AND! use a good bronzing lotion :)

skin cancer at 26 was a huge wake-up call to me. i had a short stint in my younger years were i frequented tanning beds somewhat regularly (between 1-2 years, tops.) i now slather myself daily, and in the summer multiple times a day with at least SPF 50. i was lucky that it was just basal cell carcinoma.

As someone who has had 2 skin cancer spots on their face removed before I turned 30, I just want to say it is not worth it. Pale is so much sexier than scars.

I think tanning beds are fine in moderation--there are obviously people who practically live in them!

I always wear sunscreen in the summer, but spend as much time outside as possible.

I'm lucky to be part Hispanic, so I tan easily/rarely burn...my poor skinny, white boyfriend is another story....

It's bad. Don't do it. Natural sunlight if you're are determined to get a little darker. Wear sunscreen. If I could only offer you one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.

I love tanning as well. It makes me look thinner, WAY thinner, and right now is the time I hit up the tanning salon so when summer comes around, I won't have to worry about getting burned. I spend a lot of time outside. Yeah, there's a risk of cancer, but honestly what doesn't give you cancer these days?

Agreed.... nearly EVERYTHING can cause cancer these days! Although some of my family members have had questionable spots removed, I still tan. I LOVE it! It is the most relaxing 20 minutes of my day! I don't tan daily and I don't tan year round. I start about now and tan into summer until I start going to the lake, beach, etc to work on natural tan. I only tan my bare face once every few tans though. Good news is, I had a dermatologist check up last and all is well!

I'm not a fan of spray tans... they don't seem to turn out well. In my opinion, anyway.

A "base" tan is actually a myth. Being tan (especially from artificial sunlight) does not protect you from burning at all.

agreed. ALL tan color developed from UV exposure is evidence of sun damage.
  • Does anyone have suggestions on fake tanners/spray tans that can be used all over? (face included?) I definetly think the risks of using tanning beds outweigh the positives. I hear mystic tan is notoriously uneven and only last 3-4 days. :(

Jergens is nice.. or when I used the sunless products I used Sublime Bronze, I think it's L'Oreal :drinker:
  • I've had a lot of luck with Jergens Natural Glow. Takes about 3 days or so to show, and I've never had an issue with it streaking (I'm also veryyy careful about applying evenly.)

I've started using this just last week and I LOVE it. I bought the Loreal brand last year. Hated it. Way too dark, had too much glitter in it. This stuff looks natural and is wonderful.

Also, tanning causes you to prematurely age, so even if you're (stupidly) flippant about cancer, think of the wrinkles you're creating!

Leather= good for footballs, bad for faces.

    Just don't.

Exactly my thoughts. I work in a dr's office and you can always tell which ladies starting as young as in their 40's have spent a lot of time tanning and which haven't. It may make you look better now but in twenty years I guarantee it won't!

i should probably care about me getting cancer more than i do, but i really just love to tan. As ignorant as that sounds, nothing feels better to me than laying in a tanning booth. It clears my skin..makes me feel thinner..i just love it!

I just had pre-cancerous spots removed from both hands, my arm, and one on my face.

That's what you get from tanning.

If you're dying to be tanned--go have a professional airbrush tan done.

Stay out of the tanning bed. As someone who is dealing with ghe consequences of years of "healthy tanning" in tanning beds, I'm here to tell you, it ain't worth it.

Try Tan Towels (http://www.tantowel.com/). They are amazing and basically fool-proof.

I am so pale I am translucent LOL I have learned how to properly do my face make up to look healthy and vibrant. I believe that true tanning is awful for you. As an example I scalded my hand VERY badly last summer, when the 3 inch plus blister went away the color on my hand was a lovely golden brown color. I got to thinking about how the sun does this and we think of healthy glow when really it is just cooked. If you need some color I would suggest good make up tricks and the healthy glow lotions. I like jergens healthy glow on my legs.

lol i know 2.... maybe 3 girls who have gotten skin cancer on their face from tanning... yup... and they still go tanning.... do as you please but yeahhhh... when i worked at a salon we still had the old signs that you had to have above the beds that says this is likely to give you cancer.... guess the gov doesnt require them anymore lol
  • I tan once a week at my Gym. I love the way the warm bed feels and I like having a little glow. I tan for 15 minutes at a time and I use a good moisterizer.
If you have family history of skin cancer, you need to be careful. I am not a Doctor, but I have read that all and most skin cancers come from the burning of the skin, from sometime when a person was in their younger days. Don't burn yourself! Plus, I do believe you get your Vitamin D from tanning beds too. Spray tans aren't bad, but you do get a little orange and if you work out and shower alot, it will only last like 3 days! Good luck!
  • My Bronze from SupreTan.... I recommend this too :flowerforyou:

I never burned and tan naturally very easily. I still got skin cancer. Any tanning (even with lotion) increases this risk expontentially.

Skin cancer is not worth the risk IMO. I have family members who own a tanning salon and still continue to tan after having melanoma removed. It's like justifying social smoking- you are still inhaling toxic chemicals reguardless of the frequency. The risk of shortening my life just so I look darker than the skin tone I was born with is absurd.

Yes I tan... I understand that there are risks, but you know, there are risks with just about anything you do now adays.... I want to live and be happy with how I look, I look much better with a tan, you don't have to go until you look like a brown paper bag. haha! Just be happy with what you look like... Thats all that matters at the end of the day.
didnt see this..but i definitely agree!! You can get cancer from a cell phone now adays they are saying..i dont see people throwing their phones out the window though.

:embarassed: This. Except I don't use a tanning bed (anymore, tried last year and it didn't tan me at all) and I don't have problem skin so it's always clear. I just love the heat of the sun...and I won't lie, I look a h*ll of a lot better tan.... and I acknowlege the ignorance as much as the poster I quoted.

I tan a couple of times a week, but I have olive skin and I don't look like an oompa loompa...and for me, well it just makes me feel good, I like the way I look when I am tan, and it is relaxing.

I have never tanned & never will...My cousin passed away Jan 17th only 167 days after being diagnosed with Melanoma...so i'm pretty happy with my pale skin

Melanoma kills you dead. No tanning for me. I've learned to embrace my paleness.

I think we just still associate tan with health, I hope that will eventually change. Personally, I think paleness can be very pretty. I tan easily so even minimal exposure darkens me up but I no longer purposely tan, not after they started cutting chunks off of my father.
