Don't know if this is the right place for this...

I've sort of noticed a trend on MFP that isn't settling very well with me.

Loosing weight is hard. All of us here are very aware of this. But it seems like we only notice, comment on, or give praise to people who have lost significant amounts of weight. Not that encouraging each other is a bad thing. It certainly is an awesome thing, and I love that I have a place to go for that. I love seeing huge success with members here. Its super encouraging! Sheesh! I can only imagine how tough and dedicated you have to be to get that far. I see myself getting there....one day.

But what about those out there who are just getting started? Those who have only lost a few pounds, or get excited when someone notices their weight loss for the first time? I feel the beginning of the journey is the toughest. Turning bad habits into good ones, starting new routines and sticking to them, all of that jazz.

I've noticed that when people post about small things like fitting into a pair of old "skinny" jeans, resisting food temptation, or just happy to know that what they are doing is finally working, it seems like its not as much of a celebration as before or after pictures are. Any and all feats of weight loss should be encouraged. no matter how big or small. Encouragement is a big part in not falling off the wagon in this game, and for some of us, this site is where we get most of our encouragement. For me at least.

I dunno. I guess I'm just saying, we are all trying to reach goals here and any sort of motivation, even in the smallest of forms for the simplest of things can be more encouraging that you know. We've gotta support and be there for each other, no matter how far along the path we happen to be. I guess I've just been observing and thinking about that lately.

Good luck to everyone, and keep up the great work!!!

Hmmm...I have experienced a LOT of encouragement and I have only lost my first 10 lbs....
I am also in a group called JUNE STARTERS and we constantly find a way to praise each other to success. Even for those "little" losses. They all add up to the big picture!
Anyway, sorry you haven't had the same postive experience that I have... :flowerforyou:
Maybe find a group of friends here and keep each other motivated. I have one MFP friend who we check in with each other each week. We have actually even developed a really great friendship.
HEre is to having a better experience from this point on :drinker:
  • I've seen quite a bit of praise and way-to-go's for any accomplishment. One thing to remember is that if you want your successes noticed you have to post them. Keep on working toward your goals.

    Good Luck :flowerforyou:

But its not just me, I've noticed it with others too, but maybe just sharing their success is all they need. Maybe I shoud join a group or something. I love feedback; positive or negative you know? I guess I'm just strange like that. One of the reasons I joined this site is for the calorie counter and seeing everyone just lifting each other up. I thought "this is awesome!! I could totally use a support system like this!"

I'm not really sharing my weight loss goals with people that I know personally. Its just because I've been down the "I'm gonna loose weight" road before and have always failed. But this time, I'm doing it for me, so I don't really share with many people i know. its my own journey, and this is the furthest i've come in a long time! I guess this is the only place I can go for encouragement.

Zibbity, I am also very sorry that you are not having a better experience here. You are so right that we need to keep encouraging each other even if it is for little things. I know that I have only been on this site for a week and have found some great threads that do just that.
Let me know how you are doing. When did you start your lifestyle change? Have you lost any weight, inches? How are feeling? Are you fitting better in your jeans? etc...
I would love to help you out in any way that I can. I can almost always find a positive in anything. So, hang in there and I know you can do this. You found this site, so you are starting on the right foot. It is always hard to start something new, but when you find something like this to put yourself out there, you can hold yourself more accountable. I commend you for that. I wish you the best of luck in your journey to a happier and healthier lifestyle. Have a great weekend.

That's weird, because I think its the other way on here. It seems like people will celebrate even the smallest thing.

"I stayed 4 calories under goal today" re: "OMG, way to go, thats awesome"

Just stuff like that. I guess it's all in how you look at things. But to me it seems like there are a lot of people on here that are willng to celebrate any victory with people, no matter how big or small.

But, just in case your experience is not like that, you can message me any success you have and I will certainly celebrate them with you... :drinker:

Thank you! I'm super close to my mini goal. I've lost about 20 pounds since April, and a total of 12 inches all the way around my body. Clothes are fitting looser, and my endurance is just climing which is cool.

I've only posted a few times here, about random things, but didn't really get much of a response, so I've just considered watching from the sidelines. Maybe I'm more of the encourager instead of the encouraged...I don't think that even made sense just now!

I know this is silly and has nothing to do with this post but, I just realized that I can click on your name and see where you are from and your profile. That is so kewl. Can you tell that I am new to this site?

I guess this right here is what I've been missing out on. Everyone is being super nice and I knew that this was the type of community this was. Maybe I just need to post more and not worry about it if anyone says anything or not. The whole thing is so freakin hard.

Fridays at work are the worst because that's when everyone I know decides to get hamburgers and chicken wings and pizza, meanwhile i've got my boring ol salad. I was gonna post about that here, but figured it wouldn't matter.

I've got to lose that mindset. Thank you for everyone that has commented. Its making me feel loads better. I knew it just had to be me thinking this way.

I hear ya about food at work. I normally sit around and eat my apple or something while others stuff not so good things in their mouths. Like they say, peer pressure is a b**ch. You should def. post about that here, we can tell you about how bad that stuff is for them and how much better off you are not to be eating it.

If you want I can find something about the nasty things chicken wings (skin on, deep fried, battered, hot sauce) do to your insides. That should hold off the cravings for a little bit.

Nah, but really, some people don't like honesty. I feel the same way sometimes, some people just don't like me either.

It IS hard.... don't let the "food pushers" get to you. You'll be buying smaller clothes and they'll be packing on the pounds with all that junk food. The difference is YOU care about what YOU are putting into YOUR body. Not that we all wouldn't like a slice of pizza now and then... and that's okay too.

You're doing GREAT!! I've hit a plateau (for about a month now) and it's getting very frustrating but I looked through the message boards and found other people with the same problem and some very encouraging responses and recommendations from several members. I've changed my workout and a few other things and it's all due to the comments members have made. Keep going!! I know I am going to keep trying and just like you I will post when I need a bit of encouragement (or be the encouragER as that can be motivating as well).

Oh now, if everyone liked everyone all of the time, how boring that would be. A good arguement about carbs or eating your exercise calories or the best type of cardio is interesting  !!

I will try to post more to people celebrating their successes too. I do know how important support is and believe that the support on this site is a big help for me sticking to my plan. So I'll try to pay it forward more often :flowerforyou:

Honey, that "20 pounds lost" is encouraging to all of us. It's one more little sign saying "She did it - she's doing it - I can do it to"... Good job and thank you.

Why do people hate Sarge? 'cause he's horribly, viciously, brutally honest. He says exactly what he thinks. I don't always agree with him, but I always admire the guts.

20 pounds is awesome mama and I know you can stick to it this time especially because you are doing it for YOU! :flowerforyou:

That is a great way to look at it. Just think of all those calories that they are eating. YUK!!!

    Zibbity,
What are you putting in your salad? You say that it is boring. Try to spice it up with some chicken or tuna. I have found a great salad dressing. It is from Kraft lite raspberry vinaigerrete. I did not really think that I would like it, but I absolutely love it. I know it is not fun to have a boring salad. Just experiment and see what fun stuff you can put in it.

Thank you! I want to loose a total of 80 pounds. But after loosing the first 20, the next 60 don't seem that far off. I really do need to go shopping, but I'm planning some events that's keeping the fundage a bit tight. BUT! It will be awesome to go shopping at an even smaller size for my big trip in October!
