Walking with weights?

I walk 1.5 miles a day up and down hills around my neighborhood with 5lbs worth of weights strapped to my wrists for additional workout. So how do I calculate this? Should I just keep marking it as "walking" and nothing else or should I mark weights at a low intensity? Just want to make sure I'm doing this right.

When I walk with weights I just log it as walking.

when the weather is good for walking outside i do this a bit.
But i wear a HRM to record it. And just make my own category in MFP (walking with hand weights)
I'd never trust some kind of estimate on here.
And it is no good me giving you what calories i do since when i walk i walk on sand dunes.

Get a HRM, you'll never look back.

There are categories in the database called "Walking with a 10 pound backpack" or you could just enter it as regular walking and figure the numbers are a tad low.

This is not an exact science. And the difference is not appreciable. I'm sure you make 100s of calories of errors every day. It's okay, it all works out.

What brand is good for a HRM? I don't have a lot of money to spend at the moment so I would like to spend less than $50 if possible. >.<

Just log as walking. I do the same, it does not burn more (well maybe a few but not worth noting). On the plus side it will help strengthen and tone your arms and legs.

This is the non HRM calculation. I have no idea how accurate it is. I've heard walking with weights is bad, because it may lead to injury.

There is an option in the database for hiking hills with extra weight. Maybe that would work! Although, a better choice would be to invest in a heart rate monitor. Then you'll know how much you're burning for sure (or at least as accurately as a HRM can get).
  • I would recommend this website: http://calorielab.com/burned/. Since the amount of calories you burn at an activity will depend upon your weight (the more you weigh, the more calories you burn doing an activity of someone who weighs less), this website gives the calories burned on a TON of activities, but also does it based on your weight.

I'm not sure how you should record it but it really ups my calorie burn when I carry weights and do arm exercises as I go. Doing actual arm exercises bumps my heart rate even more than just carrying the weights. I use them for the first 20-25 minutes to get my heart rate up and then drop them for the rest of the time. I use a HRM to calculate my calories.

Thanks guys! I have an interview tomorrow and next week so hopefully I'll be employed soon. My first purchase will be a heart monitor. Does anyone have any recommendation for brands? :)

Suunto is actually the manufacturer of Polar.

I have a Polar. Do some research. Here, start with this: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/Azdak/view/the-real-facts-about-hrms-and-calories-what-you-need-to-know-before-purchasing-an-hrm-or-using-one-21472

Just make sure to buy one with a chest strap transmitter. The Polars are the most popular.

You can go to their website and do side-by-side comparisons on their different models. Or go to Amazon.com and read the user reviews.
