Should we get rid of cash?
I listen to talk radio alot and recently on a show I listened to an author speaking about abolishing cash and the advantages and disadvantages to it.
A couple of advantages would be that banks can't get physically robbed if paper money no longer existed and counterfeiting would halt altogether saving many merchants from losing merchandise to counterfeits.
But a couple of disadvantages would be issues with tipping (like a cab driver or bellman) and emergency use of cash incase you lost a credit or debit card.
So what are your opinions?

I don't really have an answer to your question but I tend to use my debit card more than anything.

Did you know that it cost 11 cents to make each penny?0 -

those metals have risen that much? I thought it was around 2.1?
for 11 cents maybe you mean a nickel that would be more comparative for the value of nickel and copper0 -
I'm glad to see you're certified in fitness areas so that you appear more credible when posting about this subject matter. :drinker:0

hahaha I've never actually read his signature until now...I've been around a lot longer than my current screen name says. I too am glad to know that this is coming from a certified fitness instructor.
About the cash...the only thing is that when technology fails you may need cash. I've been working when our machines went down before and it was a huge pain in the *kitten*.0 -
The gov't can't write up a budget as is...worst idea ever.0

It's not just the cost of metal. It's the cost of running the machines @ the mint and paying the employees, etc. It's also the blatant unconstitutional inflation the fed tacks on just so the fat cats can sit back and cackle at the rest of us while their bank accounts expand exponentially. But that's another story for another day. ;p0 -
I'm just showing you I'm not as dumb as most people think us meat heads think we are!

I know there is other costs involved aswell , I just did a rough calcualtion from market prices ;as the figure I saw looked quite different from one I had seen recently0 -
I don't think it's a good idea. We would be giving up more of our privacy.0

Ever try to use an ATM in another country? Not easy. I don't carry much cash, except for kid's allowances (funny, the kids won't accept my cheques, so distrustful). And I live in Canada, Tim Horton's doesn't accept Debit or Credit cards. Sigh, I need my Tim's.0

no cash? how am I supposed to run my "business"???0

Abolishing cash....not even a little bit on board with it for a myriad of reasons:
1. Look at the issue from a lower socioeconomic standpoint....what happens to the people that do not have access to banks whether it be to due to transportation issues or even access to the internet which many people do their banking on right now.
2. What about people that understand the concept of cash but unable to balance what they have in the bank. I have worked with many children in special education that could figure out how to count money however to balance a checkbook may be overwhelming and they may need assistance.
3. What on earth is the toothfairy going to leave...a debit card??? Really, what a shame that would be.
4. Also from my understanding we spend less money when working in cash than credit or debit cards.
5. Often when we travel across different currancy formats the exchange rate is not as good when using credit cards.
6. How much money is skimmed electronically per year off of credit or debit cards as well as identity theft..is it more than cash stolen...I don't know, just a question, I would think that theft would become even higher.
7. Oh ya also some people have issues using credit/debit cards because they often track buying patterns and people have "big brother" issues and don't want companies or the government to track buying habits.
I can actually come up with many more reasons not to abolish cash, but honestly I am tired.....in saying all this I almost never have cash on me:-P I much prefer to use my debit card. But when we look at other populations, we have to see what might be good for them as well.0 -
