Calorie Question

I found a recipe that calls for 1/4 cup of lemon juice. The bottle says that 1 tsp is 0 calories. Will there ever be calories in lemon juice when you use a certain amount. If so, how many?

Are there calories in seasonings like garlic, oregano, etc.?

Thanks.

the only thing that has absolutely no calories is water. when a label says 0 calories, then that means that for that serving size, then the amount of calories is a small enough fraction that it is negligible, hence the zero. so if 1 tablespoon of lemon juice has 0 calories, then 1/4 of a cup might have 5 calories (i don't actually know how much it would be but its going to be a really small number).

as for other seasonings, they do have calories but the amount is so small that you shouldn't even worry about it. 1 tablespoon of basil is only 3 calories, one clove of garlic is about 8 calories, etc. they're not worth logging or anything you should worry about.
  • in our very own food database on MFP...lemon juice (canned or bottled) has 51 calories in 1 cup.

As far as dried seasonings, the great majority of people never use enough to gain measurable calories from them--as a little goes a long way. But they still do have some.
