You'll drop the pound when your TOM is over.
We have it hard because we GROW PEOPLE. Our bodies are not destined to be rock hard, they are soft and snuggly for holding babies. We have boobs to nurse babies. We have extra fat because we GROW people. From scratch!0 -
You will see the drop about 2 days in, and it will reoccur every cycle. As women, we are built different and our bodies react different. You are probably also a little constipated, and that too will pass (no pun intended). DO NOT let the numbers on a scale control your life; let the feel of you clothes dictate how you are doing :~)0

TOM SUCKS...plain and simple. I am currently in the same boat and am up about 4lbs. I am retaining water like the Hoover freaking Dam! We have to suffer through it and know that we'll come out ok on the other end. I sometimes give into my cravings, but always over compensate with water. Good luck....we're a powerful breed, so we shall prevail, lol!0

Drink tons of water and take some ibuprofen.....helps reduce inflammation and cramps.....the bloat will go away and you'll feel so much better...and likely drop a little weight on top of it if you've been rockin' it out!0

I hate aunt flow...A good way to bring a person down. I don't get to bad of cravings and if I do I just keep it in moderation. I usually gain a couple lbs as well from water retention and I feel so boated iikk..I just tell myself that once its over I will return to my normal weight!0

I tend to feel really bloated but I just kind of "stick it through" for the 5 days or however long it lasts. By the end I'm back where I was before in terms of weight.0

Pinkearthmama, I LOVE this that you said. How beautiful. You hit it. And from scratch to boot! Wonderful thought, wonderful post, wonderful take on that part of being a woman.

Oh my goodness.... mine has gotten so much worse with age.
Most months I go up 5-7 pounds for a good week or so and bloat myself right out my clothes!
Not even taking water pills helps anymore.
Talk about becoming deflated.. makes you feel like all your hard work the other 3 weeks of the month is pointless.
So frustrating and depressing.
I'm still trying to figure out how to deal with it.
I already live a strict gluten free- dairy life.
I only drink water and natural fruit juices, limit processed foods, rarely eat out, rarely eat refined sugar and watch my sodium intake.
Nothing helps that time of the month!!!! :sad:0 -

I have the same problem. i'll be complaining to my husband next weekend.
But yes, it will go away, so just stay off the scale for a few days and keep logging and working out.
*edit: I have ghiradelli 86% dark chocolate on hand for those days. 64 calories a square. i get one each night when i'm grumpy. even if they are extra (over) calories for the day. the dark choc is good for you (in moderation), and the dark really calms the cravings in a way wimpy milk chocolate never could0 -
I just got mine bright and early today, and it is my birthday. Happy effing birthday to me. Haha. Needless to say, I hear ya.0

I thought I was the only one who called her Aunt Flo!! LOL! Even though she is not due to come in town until next week, I can already feel the effects. Usually I fluctuate during this time and I don't weigh in that particular week.0

hahahaha i know!!!! add me0

i'm here!!! it's ok, 1 lb is no big deal, I go up and down a few lbs in one day even on my normal, non-TOM days! Just try to deal with any cravings by maybe exercising a little more, that can help with other symptoms too.
Maybe don't even weigh yourself until it's over, and then carry on from there. good luck!!0 -
I always put on 1-2lbs during my TOM, it goes straight after, keep drinking water and try PMS tea, you can get it in health stores, helps with water rentention, my birthday tomorrow, nice pressie for me....ugh!0

I NEVER weigh when the crimson tide comes through! It makes you bloaty and uncomfortable. And plus, when you see that you've gained a pound from carrying extra "baggage", you get emotional x10!0
-
What about us who have gone thru the change? I was bloatie and seemed to have put back on a couple of pounds last month but the went away. Now this month, I seem to be experiencing the same again? Does "ghost cycles" exist in us older folk? I'm 66.0

Happy Birthday...can you return mother nature's present? lol0 -
Sorry to hear it. Drink lots of water. The week before is sometimes a good losing week. Also if you're having cravings for sweets, make sure you have enough protein. Sometimes that curbs the cravings for me.0

I always gain weight that TOM I eat hard boiled eggs to help with cravings and cramps0

^Love this!!
Also I read that this is when you feel the least like exercising but it's extremely helpful for reducing the water weight and just making you feel better.0 -
Well I was "blessed" (yeah right) to have flo visit me Thursday night. I have been working out and eating right so I haven't had the cramps and bloating as bad as I had in the past. I have taken far less pain med to relieve cramps and upped my water intake.0
-
I'm feeling it today....I'm cramping, cravings are bad, and I feel sluggish. But I have to get my workout in today...gonna pop about 4 advil and knock out my running. Luckily I haven't started yet, just PMS'ing......otherwise I wouldn't be able to make it to the gym. I'm constantly having to worry that the tampon and pad I'm wearing won't be enough and I'll embarrass myself at the gym one day with a big red spot on my pants. Lol........0

I agree with you completely!! Why does it seem you always get the TOM when it's something special going on... It would be nice if you would get the "visit" the week before or after your big party or vacation not right smack in the middle!!0 -
Try not to fret about that measely pound, it's probably only water weight. The icky feelings suck....but they too go away!!0
-
oh girl I know the feeling I got my lovely visit Thursday, complete with major cramps and bloating ughhhh, gave into my hormones and had a chocolate and pecan cluster it was either that or bite someones head off I woke up yesterday tho in a awesome mood, I did laundry, deep cleaned the kitchen, and even cleaned my living room carpet. I have no clue where the extra energy came from, but I was hauling butt!! Sometimes you just have to take that first day off to re-cooperate and adjust to the "visit".0
-
At 54 I feel blessed to still get mine on a sort of regular basis. Not having them means a whole new set of problems, that I'm not looking forward to.0
-
i get through it by knowing that its just that, a cycle, which means as fast as it came it will go again. you just have to be strong and stick to your diet and you will be fine. more then likely the pound you put on was just from water retention. if you have a bad day then leave it as that and make the next better. always remember, this too shall pass. on to bigger and brighter things, you can do it hun!0
-
I decided to take a break from logging food the first few days, just til I stopped feeling crappy. I probably didn't do too bad those few days and don't feel guilty either. And I'm down a pound or two today! Yay!0
-
things I have learned while dieting..... if you cut out sugar, your period will be much heavier. The one thing they never warned me about on the South Beach Diet.
The one good thing for me is my metabolism kicks up during my period. So if I can just stick with MFP numbers I will be rewarded when it's over with. I do cave into my cravings sometimes but I put the numbers in. I have learned to balance it out so in about 5 days I see a drop in the scales. Last month we happened to travel during my TOM and we splurged eating out.... I still lost a pound and my husband gained two! (Secretly that felt good since he can lose it much easier than me!)
But yes..... for a good week I don't see a change on the scales or I might see an increase of a pound. I get frustrated. I get very hormonal at times too.... for me it's my patience that goes. I get snappy and I feel tense. Exercise helps. I get on the treadmill and just try to let it all go. I put on upbeat music and dance around the house while I clean. I try to get outside to get some sun and fresh air.
Worst case scenario, I lock myself away from the food and curl up with a good book or a movie.0
