I heard from two sources last week that grapefruits burn fat like crazy. So I went to the store and bought two. For the past five days, I have ate half a grapefruit for a snack. I have lost A POUND A DAY!!! This cannot be a coincidence people! Wanted to share in case this could help someone else, and also, does anyone have any grapefruit success stories? :)

I'm more interested in how the heck you got 5 days worth of snacking on 1/2 grapefruit from only 2 grapefruit.

I could be completely wrong on this, but I do believe it's only coincidental. I eat grapefruit quite often, because I love grapefruit. Especially the ruby red. I've heard the same as you did; that it really helps with weight loss. But I just put that info into the same file with all the other "miracle" weight-loss aides. Not saying you're wrong, not at all. You got good results from it, and that's all that matters!

On the fourth day, I went out and bought two more. No, lol, I did not get four halves into five days at a half a day.

And it wasn't my only snack of the day, just one of my snacks.

But totally agree with you, I never really ate them before, and they are so good!

Oh no, not the only snack ma'am. LOL. Just one of my snacks.

Somewhat off topic but just as a caution to people on anti-depressants, anti-anxiety, birth control (and possibly others): Grapefruit is often discouraged when taking these types of medication. Your pharmacist or doctor can tell you if this is the case for you. Sorry, had to put the plug out there, because unfortunately this fact is often overlooked but it can be a dangerous oversight.

Thanks for saying this, because I had better clarify. I am trying to lose weight in the most healthy way possible. I am eating a ton of fruits and veggies and not starving myself by any means. But at the same time, I cannot control how fast my body burns fat.

And it is sooo encouraging to see the numbers move, I have to admit.

A lb a day can be healthy. Just because it is not typical does not mean it is not healthy. It all depends on the amount of activity vs. the amount of calories and nutrients consumed. A healthy diet and lots of exercise can result in 5 or more lbs a week in some cases.

Yes, very good to put that out there. Another caution is for those on cholesterol-lowering meds. Grapefruit interacts with some but not others. Very, very good advice about speaking with the pharmacist. My doctor failed to tell me, but the pharmacist was right on it.

I don't think grapefruit provides any miracle weight loss solution, but I like it because it is a tasty snack that keeps me full for a while (so I don't keep snacking). Sometimes I'll have half in the morning and half in the afternoon for my snacks.

If the OP were to open her diary I'm sure we could figure out why this happened. My guess is that the grapefruit provided some satiety and/or replaced higher calorie food.

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but you lost weight because you're restricting calories, not because you're eating grapefruit.

Grapefruit is not magic. It is not a 'fat burner'. It's just a citrus fruit. IF if IF it has an effect on metabolism, that effect is small.

Maybe it is a coincidence. I have been eating very healthy and excercising faithfully for about a month with fantastic results. But not as good as when I incorporated the grapefruit.

This x 11ty billion. Grapefruit interacts with so many different medications and can cause adverse effects. If you are on medication talk to your doctor before incorporating grapefruit into your diet.

Funny you should write about this. I weighed myself yesterday morning and had a grapefruit yesterday afternoon. This morning I got on the scale and was one lb lighter! I really couldn't understand why, but I guess this grapefruit theory is something to check out! I love grapefruit anyway, so I'm going to "experiment" with this theory. Thanks for sharing.

Glad it's working. First off, whether the grapefruit is the cause or not is mostly irrelevant. You're not moving backwards, and that's all that matters.

That said, you'll lose a pound by burning roughly 3500 calories. Regardless of whether or not the grapefruit is contributing to a metabolism boost, it's definitely not making you burn 3500 calories a day that you previously were not.

You're probably losing some water retention, which is fine so long as you keep yourself hydrated. Either way, the grapefruit isn't hurting anything so long as you're not on any medication. I work them into my snacks as well.

I got the texas grapefruit and start to 1 a day because I heard it reduces high blood pressure.
One thing it does stop my craving for sweet and they do fill me up. They are low cal, low carb (compare to other fruit.
  • In researching the grapefruit diet (eat 1/2 grapefruit or drink 8oz grapefruit juice with every meal), I've come across a couple of "recent" studies showing that grapefruit does, indeed, aid in weight loss. The grapefruit contains properties that affect insulin. So, don't just blow it off.

so you've dragged this 2 year old thread up from the grave and you've not even provided links to these studies
  • Really? What a sweet person you must be!
Since it was apparent that no one else cared to google "grapefruit and weight loss", I assumed no one was interested in links.
    Are you?

Yep...anti seizure meds are greatly affected by grapefruit. This can be devastating....please check before doing something like this....

Any time I am prescribed a new drug or OTC supplement I go to an online drug interaction checker. It gives drug-to-drug interactions, food-to-drug interactions, and lifestyle interactions (like alcohol and tobacco). Thank goodness I did that because I found that my omeprazol (prescription Prilosec) should not be taken with a couple of my others because the omeprazol will slow down and possibly prevent absorption. I also should not take my iron supplement with dairy.

No problems with grapefruit though. WooHoo!!! I can buy my box from the HS band at Christmas and continue to eat my grapefruit one a day in winter.

I take your grapefruit and raise you cottage cheese with peanut flour, maple syrup and cinnamon.

I eat this every day for about the last 6 months.

    Ended up looking like this

    See how silly that sounds?
