Avg HRM reading in the 160s during jog... wtf?

I just started using a heart rate monitor. I went for a 40 min jog today and it recorded my average HR as 169, with a high in the 180s. After sitting on the couch for about fifteen minutes it's showing 75 - 90 depending on when I look at it. I took my heart rate manually and it seems to be showing the correct HR, at least for now. I didn't manually take my HR while I was jogging.
Based on what I've read an average heart rate of 169 seems really high. Assuming my HRM is working properly, should I be concerned? I'm 29, 6' tall, 150 lbs. I jog at 11 min/mi pace (slow) and while running isn't my strong suit it doesn't feel like I'm gasping for breath at that pace.

Max heartbeats for your age during excercise would be 191 so 169 is not bad at all (220-29=191)0

I'm looking forward to responses because I have the same thing (same range) every time I run. I'm 36, 5'4 and 135lbs. And same as you, I feel like I am running at a comfortable pace. But I'm tired of my hrm telling me each week I need to train less in Zone3. :grumble:0

My HR hits 160 when I'm giving it a good pace while running/jogging. A slower pace nets me about 140 but it is always 160 if I'm giving extra effort and I have hit 200 before but wasn't feeling any symptoms. HR is just a number so nothing to panic over though, unless you have any kind of symptoms. I'd say 169 shows you are giving it a good effort so that is a good thing! Of course, if you ever experience nausea, dizziness, sweatiness, or chest pain, you should back off and let the heart rate settle a little. Be smart. Happy running!0

Well mine is in the 180's when I run (slow, 4.5mph) so yours doesn't seem high to me. LOL0

Seems average to me too0

I start to feel really uncomfortable if I get anywhere above 160, but if you feel good then I would not worry about it...rather, I'd ping the HRM makers and suggest they let you adjust the zones!0

Thanks for the question. I was just going to ask about this. I was slowing my running down just to stay in Zone 3 and I felt like I was just walking.0
