Thyroid issue

So i recently got my blood work and it indicated that I have hypothyroidism on a small scale, My doctor has asked me to repeat my blood work in another month or so to confirm it. Now no matter how much i exercise/diet my weight does not go down. I am at a flat line rite now which is very discouraging.
Does any one have tips/advice on how to deal with this issue?

I was struggling then read on a forum here about a link between people with hypothyroidism having problems processing wheat and sometimes other foods.. nuts were mentioned and I already have a nut allergy so tried dropping wheat and lost 7lbs in the first week!
I went low carb too and that helped me lose the next 18lbs quite quickly then it slowed down a bit. I slowly re-introduced some carbs back like cereals but non-wheat based ones and allowed gluten free bread 1-2 a week for toast or a bacon sandwich at weekend and still managing to lose a few pounds a month even though TOTM has been playing up since December (peri-menopause kicking in I think)
I'll be staying mostly wheat free on a daily basis (though not giving up my hot choc fudge cake when I go out for my birthday meal!) so hopefully it will stay off. Maybe worth trying?0 -
I have autoimmune hypothyroid problems, also at an earlier stage. They are usually directly linked to some level of gluten issue. I have been seeing a dietitian who has told me to go gluten free as it can trigger attacks on the thyroid. I haven't been gluten free long enough to know whether it will help with weight loss but I'll try to check back when I have more experience with that.
It's also worth noting that hypothyroid can make you very sensitive to what some people would call "starvation response." The dietitian has told me to add 200 calories a day three times over the last two months. I haven't lost any weight but I also haven't gained (eating 600-800 calories a day more than I was two months ago) so I guess that goes to show that I was eating too little. I now eat a minimum net of 1350 calories a day - meaning that I eat all of my exercise calories back on top of the 1350. On long run days that can be close to 3000 calories and I still haven't gained any weight so there must be some truth to it.
One more thing you might try - there are supplements (Thytrophin PMG along with selenium and possibly iodine) that you can take to support the thyroid that are not actual hormone replacement. They are dessicated bovine thyroid with the thyroxine removed - so it's basically everything the thyroid makes except thyroxine from what I understand. This won't work forever but if you are in the early stages of a thyroid problem they may help to prevent it from getting worse more quickly. I had issue with it initially as I don't eat meat, but it basically came down to my health vs my ideals. In the case of the supplements, health won.
I recommend seeing a registered dietitian about the issue as they can tell you more specifically if the supplements are something that can work for you and if so, how much to take. I have noticed since taking the supplements that my hands are no longer freezing all the time and my overall body temperature is more in line with the other people around me. In other words, I'm no longer needing a thick sweater when it's 70 degrees. I think that result alone is worth the price of seeing a professional. I hope to start losing weight soon too, once my body gets used to the new calorie intake.

Thank you both for your insight, I did make some dietary changes like eating fewer carbs and adding more protein to the diet, but I was not that aware of wheat and gluten products... I think its time I pay more close attention to this aspect of my diet.

Bumping as I'm dealing with hypothyroidism. I'm not on medications and I sometimes take Thyroid Complete from Whole Foods as supplement. Best of luck and please update us.0
