What's the best ice cream topping??

Healthy - wise I mean.
I am going out for ice cream and I def want oatmeal cookie ice cream. It's not the healthiest but if I don't get what I really want I'll feel deprived and still crave the oatmeal cookie ice cream once my own ice cream is done.
So to balance myself out - what topping should i get. I mean maybe I'll get none at all, that's the best choice but I wanted (if they have it) coconut shreds on top. That can't be too bad right?
I've heard marshmellow is the best topping cuz marshmellows are low in cals and airy?
Is marmellow better than coconut?
What are your views on ice cream and ice cream toppings?

I really love maple syrup on my icecream....
but then I also like almost anything on and in my icrecream.... oreos, cookie dough, chocolate.... now I want ice cream!
If you want a healthy option what about fruit? Or if you want something a little sinful what about dark chocolate?0 -

I would think the best toppings are the least processed ones (best option for food in general).
So a wee bit of coconut shreds, nuts, fruit is good.
I would look up the calorie info etc. before going to figure out what works into your counts for the day. Then juggle - juggle to make room for the treat! It's all about balance...... and FUN!

Healthy? Phew... peanuts wouldn't be too bad- at least they have good fat. Problem with most places is the fruit they have is practically candied.

OH IT IS SO GOOD ON TOP OF ICE CREAM. You know the funny thing is I was never an ice cream person. My husband eats it everynight. Ofcourse now that I can't have it I want it every night. I eat the Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches when I crave it.0 -
Peanut butter (or peanuts) is excellent with ice cream!
So are fresh strawberries or blueberries.
You can also buy low fat toppings but keep in mind that they are probably full of chemicals.
You might want to try an all natural jelly or jam.
Be careful with coconut...sometimes it has ALOT of sugar on it.0 -

My favorite topping for ice-cream is something I can only get at home. I take a banana, chop it into small chunks, sautee it in a couple pats of butter, and then throw in some faux maple syrup, brown sugar, and cinnamon, and mix it up good. Drizzle over vanilla ice cream.

ROFL Heck, eat icecream. Just be willing and committed (not the straight-jacket committed!) to work for it. Exercise first, icecream afterwards (you pick how much you want to work for.)

I also love sherbet (less calories) and pureed fruit icecreams (sorbets?) with no-sugar added and no fake sugars..... just fruit. YUMMY0 -

If you're serious about losing weight then you're gonna have to reconsider your relationship with food. By not eating ice cream you're only depriving your body of fat, sugar & a lot of calories.

I usually stay out of this stuff, but for some reason I am drawn like a fly to this thread.
I spent 15 years deprived of a healthy life. I spent the best years of my life eating icecream and saying it was because I was deprived as a child, I deserve it.
I now believe I deserve to feel healthy. If that means no icecream........then so be it.
I didnt touch a sweet for the first month of my journey. I had to re-learn eating.
To my best friend forever, who is a healthy weight by choice-she works hard for it, the best moment for her was when we walked into the icecream shop at the beach while she was here visiting.
Without a thought I asked if I could buy a banana. The girl said they only sell them in Splits. I then asked for a banana split, hold every thing but the banana.
We still laugh about that moment.
Choices-one at a time. That is what losing weight and keeping it off is all about. Look thru this thread. Shannon doesnt advertise it but she lost over 50 pounds and now runs 8-9-10 miles a day, Marla lost 50 and she too runs every day... We have been there.........

This is a hard one. I am a big believer that you can not deprive yourself-or you will continue to want that ice cream. I like to plan ahead if I can and burn those extra calories and then I order a kids scoop so I can get that craving out of my system. I am not a big fan of toppings, so I try to stay away from those-but you could always ask them to just put a little hot fudge,etc. so you can get it out of your system.
I think this is a good compromise. For example, I know that I am going to have birthday cake today so I haven't had a treat in a while and I have been trying to burn extra calories.

The "not feeling deprived" mentality is what put us all here in the first place. The original poster has just joined MFP and has set as her goal a 120 pound loss-- a total commitment to a change in lifestyle-- excercise/eating is necessary or she's wasting her time and kidding herself.
She's not being helped by being encouraged to satisfy cravings for food that isn't good for any of us-- especially so early in the program--

Sometimes maybe we need to view it as a gradual change- instead of an instant one. Eventually our choices can become better and better.
For a first step- having only one serving of 'bad' food is a fairly good one.
The issue, in my mind at least, is to keep challenging ourselves to make even better decisions down the road.
So have your ice cream- but remember you're trying to be better than you are right now. So 'upping the ante' will be necesarry at some point in the near future.
What works for one won't work for all- I wish it did, I would have lost all of my weight by now!
Another thought- eventually through being honest with your food diary, you'll see what's holding you back from your weight loss. The 'treats' tend to stand out and smack us with how bad they are.

Rainbow sprinkles . I treat myself once a day to a vanilla ice cream cone from McDonalds or 98% fat free ice cream from the day I started my new lifestyle. It is 150 calories of bliss. I feel treated, get some calcium, and yes some sugar. I use it as either a snack or part of a light lunch of salad with lite dressing, veggies and wasa crackers. It is my something to look forward to everyday. I am now 95 pounds down from 125 and haven't missed a day of my treat. I have beeen with MFP since December and know this lifestly change can be done without guilt, without deprivation, without thinking you failed to live a healthy life.0

Generally speaking, I don't do sweets anymore. But then again, just last week, I finished off a bag of fun size 3 musketeers bars. They'd been in my dresser since Halloween though. When I'd get a chocolate craving that didn't go away after a couple of days, I'd have one. Sometimes two. But when I figure it, that bag lasted me 10 months. Used to be, it wouldn't have lasted me 10 days.
Ice cream, however, I do absolutely love. I try not to have it in the house, because a bowl for me can be half of the container. That being said, I do have a half gallon in the fridge of the no sugar added slow churned Edy's vanilla. When I first picked it up, I made brownies for my sons and their friends, and had a brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce. Then it sat in my freezer for another two weeks before I remembered it was there. That day, I had one of my really big bowls of ice cream, with fresh cut peaches over the top. YUMMMMMM... I waited another week and had another bowl, but this time I knew I had the calories for it, and I measured out a cup of ice cream and again cut the peaches over it.
I think we can learn moderation in all things. I don't need to have a dessert every day. But when I want one, I want one. I will wait for a bit to see if it goes away, but then I'll enjoy it to it's fullest.0 -
can't stand the stuff so it's not an issue. I go once a year with my daughters and one daughter is like me - she refuses to eat it, the other wants one in each flavor.
Now... dark chocolate - that is a different story. When I really crave something sweet I will reach for my dark chocolate (85%cacao) and that is rich enough to really only eat 1 square.0 -
That ice cream sounds amazing! *_* Maybe you can compromise and not add any toppings, just enjoy the ice cream for what it is?
I know there are many opinions about indulging or not, but me? I say indulge. I am a big proponent of allowing a treat once in a while. And it doesn't have to be the end of the world--I have gone through periods where I indulged in something traditionally dessert-y every single day, and periods where I only did so once a week, and I never became overweight in either of those cases.
(I WILL add I was definitely healthier when I was only indulging once a week, or a couple times a month, though. =ppp Besides, when you have treats rarely, or in moderation, it makes them taste even better!)0 -

There seems to be many people who need a verbal kick in the butt more than once.
Your words are not being ignored.
What bugs me about some people on here, is their mentality for this lifestyle change.
Their kidding themselves and some people go halfway, which of course is better than where they were in the first place, but they still think some "bad foods" are ok, even in moderation.
Do NOT buy the sweets, pop, ice cream, and you won't be as tempted.
"well I've had ice cream and I still lost weight".
"I can drink diet soda and lose weight"
For some it might work temporarily, but as you mentioned for someone starting this lifestyle, it might not be the best choices for them.0 -
One thing to think about is that 'lifestyle' change can mean different things for different people. For me, going from eating sweets everyday to eating only once in a while WAS a lifestyle change. A big one, hehe! If I want to cut out sweets completely, that, too, would be a lifestyle change from where I am now.
Some people believe in all-or-nothing, and some people believe in moderation... and some people believe in other methods, too! Everyone is on the search for what fits them the best. One thing I like about MFP is the breadth of unique individuals you will find here, it's fantastic!0 -
