If you have a garden, what are you planting this year? When are you prepping your gardens? :flowerforyou:
I live in NE Ohio, and the weather is already perfect for prepping the garden and getting some stuff in the ground (such as Purple Potatoes, which we are going to try and grow this yea r!!). We have two relatively large raised flat beds and also have a cover to go over them that is very similar to a green house effect (it helps so much when the plants are still young).
On my list so far is:
Onions
Tomatoes
Peppers (Bell, Hot and Jalapeno)
Eggplants
Summer/Yellow & Butternut Squash
Purple Potatoes
Cucumbers
I would like to add some new stuff this year. Anyone else have any ideas? Keep in mind, I dont live in the tropics

I am in the UK, so not too dissimilar weather wise? I love growing things but only have a small garden.
I will be growing potatoes, spinach, salad leaves/lettuce, courgettes (zucchini to you guys!), carrots, onions, leeks, mangetout/sugar snap peas, French beans, blueberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries, redcurrants, strawberries and blackberries.
Phew! Got a whole lotta prep to do first though!0 -
I will be planting a very small container garden with tomatoes, climbing beans, onions and some chives, parsley and dill.0

I plan to have one this summer. Bought my seed packets a few weeks ago and need to get those started in those little starter flats. Let's see ... I bought peppers, green beans, cucumbers, parsley, basil, rosemary. I know there was a couple more veggies, but can't recall off the top of my head. Going to try a container garden outdoors though, help keep any critters away I guess!0

I love to garden! Unfortunately we don't get much sunlight at our house so we're very limited on our space. I grow loads of tomatoes, lots of different varieties. I've been putting out peppers, green beans, soup beans, zucchini, and two kinds of cucumbers- one for fresh eating, and one for pickling. I have a small herb garden and a couple blueberry bushes and will add a couple more as well as some raspberries this year. We are looking at moving, hopefully sometime soon, so this year I'm not going to put out much, probably just tomatoes, beans, cucumbers and zucchini.
Zucchini is super easy and you can add it to anything without changing the flavor much. Plus its GREAT on the grill and freezes well so you can have it for winter.
Green beans are easy, they'll just need some support, even the bush kinds.
Try some new varities of your favorite veggies- there are so many kinds of tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and potatoes.0 -
We're planning one. Tomatoes, bell and chile peppers, asparagus, garlic, maybe some summer and/or winter squash, pickling cukes, basil, sage, mint, thyme, dill, cilantro, parsley.0

I have a garden...but its a secret....0

I'm going to have an indoor herb garden in my kitchen window, and at some point we're going to start an outdoor garden. It probably won't be until this summer or next year though.0

My daughter and I may attempt cucumbers and tomatoes this year. We started out some cucumbers one year but then put them outside and they died. I don't know if it was heat/sun or kids(or peoples roaming cats/dogs) that ruined it though. It seemed to do good inside just putting in window light. We do have a very very harsh sun.0

Red beets might work, also since things are so warm already (as they are here), peas need to start soon. They are an early crop and then you can plant second harvest after they are done in the same space of something else.0

I'm zone 6a.
I have a 400 square foot veggie garden (round, dirt patch used to have a pool 12 years ago so it's round!!)
We start our seeds indoors in Mid-March. We put our wee plants out in May after the threat of frost (I live in New England so we can get May frosts).
I'm planting:
lettuce and spinach in April, rest will go in May
-soy beans
-green beans
-cranberry beans
-Baby sugar pumpkins
-Butternut squash
-6 kinds of tomatoes (start from plants)
- 2 kinds of cukes (we like to make pickles)
-2 kinds of basil
-Peppers
We've had luck with tomatilloes before!0 -
I discovered my green thumb for flowers and plants a few years ago and love the stress relief my time in the garden brings. I have a great friend who has a fabulous vegetable garden and he is going to help me start my own this year. I can't wait! Tomatoes, potatoes & onions....OH MY!! :happy:0

AZ over here:
I feel likes it's harder to grow stuff out here because it gets SUPER hot, and all my crop seems to burn. I've been working on mine though.
This year, ive already planted tomatoes (early girl's and celebrities) and i'm working on planting some serrano peppers and garlic, as well as green onions.
I'd like to plant some artichokes, but i think thats just a dream!0 -
Add some basil and cilantro and you have the making of salsa or spaghetti sauce with what you have planned already0
-
I have a sad little apartment balcony 'garden', haha. 2 kalanchoe; 1 pink 1 orange, a lemon coral and a jasmine plant!0

oh and:
We also have a dwarf cherry and a dwarf peach, raspberries, and blueberries. Starting over on the strawberries.
We have to have an electric fence though...darn woodchucks are big enough to ride with a saddle! (j/k but they are fat). We also have problems with critters stealing our fruit so we have to cover EVERYTHING.0 -
i tried a garden for the 1st time last summer and I sucked at it!! Tryin again this yr....0

Now that I'm not capable of maintaining a full garden, I grow herbs for cooking. I'm a wannabe chef. I have 2 raised beds where I grow:
Rosemary
Tarragon
Thyme
Parsley (Italian flat leaf)
Peppermint
Basil
Sage
Oregano
Dill
Chives (Garlic flavor)
Chives (Onion flavor)
... and probably something I've forgotten to mention.
This year I have room for some Kohlrabi. Hopefully, they will grow. Right now they are in one of those little greenhouse planters. I also plant a few flowers here and there, in a window box. And.. of course, catnip plants for the neighborhood cats and the big, housebound, Punkin.0 -
I've got kale, collard greens, swiss chard and a few frost hardy herbs that are about 6 in high. Won't plant much more for a few weeks, after the danger of frost has passed.
We just purchased a small abandoned farm so next year I plan to grow most of our food. It's not in any shape for farming yet, but we'll get plenty of exercise getting it back up and running. And we should have plenty of fresh fish once we get the pond stocked. So excited!!0 -
What an amazingly overwhelming amount of responses already!! LOVE IT!!
I've got some GREAT new ideas thanks to everyone!
Does anyone else compost - since we are on the topic? We throw all veggie and fruit scraps into a garbage container and then put it in our garden. It was fun seeing some of the different plants we didnt plant POP UP!!0 -
I tried planting a garden last year but it proved to be too much work for me. This year, I'm planning again and the hard work will count as exercise! I want to plant tomatoes, squash, zuccini, eggplant, collard greens, eggplant and maybe some green/red/yellow peppers.
I'm excited.....0 -
I am putting my peas out very soon. Brussel sprouts are going crazy. I also need to visit the barn down the road from me and request a truckload of fertilizer0

We are going to be doing some herbs such as: Oregano, Basil and Cilantro. I love to add these herbs to my veggies when I cook. Happy Gardening!!0 -
I have started on my flower bed, but have never had a garden and though I buy seeds every year it seems they never get planted. This year I moved to a place with a perfect garden spot. Just need to get it tilled and hopefully will get it planted. Gonna plant pumpkins, watermelon, cantaloupe, couple different types of tomatos, cucumbers, corn, peppers. Planting onions. Plus I have different flowers that I need to plant. Hopefully I will get something to grow. Gonna do a harvest theme around the edges of our property with my nephew and niece. Its gonna have different varieties of corn, pumpkins, sunflowers, and daisies. wish me luck0

I'm in the suburbs of Chicago and this is my first year of giving gardening a fair shake...I bought a plot from our community garden, which is just over a mile from my house. It's a great program where we donate excess crop to the local food pantry.
My list:
Bush Cucumbers
String Beans
Sweet Peppers (blend of 5 colors)
Eggplant
Sugar Snap Peas
Lettuce Blend (doing this at garden and on the deck at home)
Spinach
Carrots
Tomatoes (on the deck at home)
Herbs (on the deck at home)
This weekend I'm planting the seeds in our little indoor greenhouse starter thingy...it's about 4 feet tall by 4 feet wide, 2 feet deep. They'll all be going in the ground late May, except the carrots which can go in earlier.
The plot fee includes manure, water, and use of the composting piles. I'm super excited! My brother in law keeps a garden of about an acre so I'll continue to swipe squash from him!
Happy gardening, y'all!0 -

We used to compost but then I got too lazy to walk everything out to the bin every night, especially in the dark and cold middle of winter so now I just chuck it down the hill next to the house. Keeps the raccoons happy and so far they've stayed out of the garden.
My work garden gets the best volunteer Mexico Midget tomatoes though!0
