Protein Shakes - Give me Pros & Cons, suggestions on what ki

I need more protein, and I struggle getting enough. I'm hungry and my snacking isn't going as well as it needs to.

So I'm interested in protein shake as a supplement, and to help increase my protein & carb ratios.

HELP!!!

    i love my protein shakes. they satiate my appetite, taste great, and give me a ton of nutrients - and help me stay in my calorie allowance! i look forward to my shakes every day. the only downside i know of is sometimes they can have a lot of sugar content, but just choose the right shake for you!

    Pros: convenient low cal/low fat way to boost protein.

    Cons: very expensive. Unregulated/poorly regulated. Many have contaminants including heavy metals.

    I add a protein powder to milk before and after a workout and a third later on if I seem to be low still on my protein intake. On non-workout days I take one mid-morning and one mid-afternoon. You can add it to whatever drink or smoothie that you want. The brand I use is called Promasil. It doesn't have the carbs and sugars that alot of the protein powders do. Each scoop gives you 20g of protein. Hope that helps some....
  • I drink one every morning for breakfast and add some milk and PB2 to it, or make it my own meal by adding various healthy food to it, but I have had it just as a snack too. The only experience I've had though is with Shakeology, so not sure how the others compare and don't really want to get into a debate here either. I do think though, that you really have to research the ingredients and make sure that some of the things being put into it are healthy for your body and not going to hurt it further. I take it because honestly, I ate like crap, I hate a lot of veggies and Shakeology has tons of healthy ingredients that get me most of my F&V in just one scoop. Now if I go a day without it, I just don't feel the same. :)

    I think if you are having a hard time getting enough protein, then they can be a good tool. I personally get tons of protein throughout the day, so it's now a problem for me.

    I use the Biox – Xtreme Power Whey Complex Protein Powder. One scoop has 130 calories, 3 grams of carbs, 3 grams of fat and 26 grams of protein. They come in great flavours that even taste good just with water. Also – no after taste – which I have found to be a problem with some of the other protein powders. I have one each day, either as a morning or afternoon snack. Good luck.
  • My wife and I both use protein supplements and highly recommend them.

    Protein powder can be crazy expensive though - I get mine from Costco where it's $40 for 6lbs. It's Muscle Milk branded and I like the chocolate flavor the best. My wife is super picky and will only go the unflavored route, so we end up buying hers from GNC at $35 for 2lbs. (yep - almost 3 times the cost of Costco)

    Typically what I do is whip up a double protein shake for breakfast in a blender bottle (2 scoops with 16 oz of milk) which is 72g of protein. It will typically keep me full until lunch, but I try to throw in a banana and yogurt anyways just to keep up my metabolism. Then for lunch and dinner it's pretty easy to get a good balance of protein and carbs. In a 50/30/20 (Carb/Protein/Fat) ratio, I always meet my daily protein goal, but I'm typically only getting about 70% of my carb goal. I'm looking to build muscle though, so I'd rather go a bit deficient on the carbs than protein.

    protien powders can be expensive and you can get protien in other forms and make that into a protien shake if needed.

    For soy protien use silken tofu and mix with some soy milk and fruit or PB2
    For whey protien use cottage cheese and mix with some milk and fruit or PB2.

    Both are good forms of protien and can be picked up in any grocery store at a good price.

    My goal weight is 135-140 lbs. I'm 5'4".

    I've heard that gram of protein for every lb of your goal weight, is that excessive?
