Hi guys,

I want to incorporate strength training in to my fitness routine with weights, but I need to be able to do it from home as I can't afford a gym membership.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a good training program for a beginner (I'll need explanation of how to do the exercises to begin with) working with dumbells.
Thanks!

  • Hey,

I followed this routine for a couple of weeks - my motivation kind of ran out of steam - and I found that I was definitely getting stronger, especially in my arms.

Because I could only really work out in my room and I only had a fairly light set of dumbells, I couldn't do all of the exercises, but most of them are do-able at home and if you're unsure as to what they are, just google them (I had to for a few) and there's normally a good video on YouTube or another site that will explain the exercise.

As I said when I was doing the exercises, I did notice an improvement in my upper body strength - at the time I was combining some of these exercises with a press-up routine so my work out for a week was as follows:

Monday - the exercises in the link for the chest (5 sets of 5 reps), 25 press ups (6, 6, 4, 4, at least 5)
    Tuesday - the back exercises
    Wednesday - 25 press ups
Thursday - the shoulder & traps exercises
Friday - the arm exercises, 25 press ups
Sat & Sun - rest (or if I missed a day's exercises in the week, I used to use the weekend to compensate)

It was good for a while, but my motivation kind of fizzled out, but that was down to my impatience I guess. Hope this helps.

I work out at home! I have some equipment, such as a eliptical (although I run outside 3x a week), free weights (3,5,8,10, & 15 lbs), resistance bands and circle bands, a step (really just collects dust), ankle weights, wrist weights, stability ball and a workout binder that holds every at home workout I could get from a magazine!

I get workouts from magazines & websites (love Oxygen). I utilize many different "household" items to work with, example: lunged on the stairs, chair for tricep dips, so on. :)
