Hi, I am 5 8 and weigh approx. 157 lbs. I just started working out hard a few days ago, and what I've been doing is going to the gym at night to burn as many calories as I have ate that day. I am trying to lose minimum of 30 lbs in 9 or 10 weeks. Anyone know if this is possible? Or unhealthy?

This is incredibly unhealthy. Please stop. You need to NET calories in order for your body to function. NET -- so if you are working out, you need to eat MORE than you are going to burn.

When I first started doing my weight loss, I saw a nutritionist who filled me in about BMR and TDEE.

BMR -- the Basal Metabolic Rate -- how many calories you burn if you just sit and breathe all day -- you should eat at least this number

TDEE -- Total Daily Energy Expenditure -- how many calories you should eat to stat at your same weight.

In order to lose weight, eat between these two numbers.

I'm including two websites, that have calculations to figure out your BMR and TDEE

    BMR -- http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

    TDEE -- http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict-equation/

It may be possible, but it's unhealthy and unsustainable. As you don't have much to lose, eat the calories MFP gives you to lose 1lb a week and eat back all at least a good proportion of your exercise calories. You'll still be at a calorific deficit and won't make yourself ill, tired and weak.

    VERY unhealthy.

Remember that you're ALWAYS burning calories, not just when you're exercising.

Even if you stayed in bed 24/7, you'd burn more than 1200 calories. The second you get out of bed, you're burning more that that. Add exercise on top, and your burn gets even higher.

Trying to burn off the calories you eat by exercise alone... and you'd be expecting your car to drive cross country on a half a tank of gas.

Definitely not healthy. You and I are the same height. You are in the normal weight range right now. But I understand wanting to lose more. I have a goal of 135 myself. You will probably look great in the 130's. But 30 pounds in 10 weeks is not realistic for your body size right now. I would aim more for 10-15 pounds in 10 weeks.

Imagine how good you will look close to 140 pounds! that way you can lose the healthy way and look and feel good in the process.

Unhealthy... unless you particularly like the skinny fat look... and want no energy and rubbish hair and nails...

3lbs a week for a 157lb person? Safe weight loss would be 1% of your total body weight so that would be a 1.5lbs a week. and you're speaking of doubling that every week and increasing the percentage each week (based on a lower weight).
While "possible" you will definitely lose lean muscle to do it and could basically disrupt your metabolism with losing that fast. As to health, fast weight loss usually comes back as fast weight regain which isn't good on the heart.

That isn't right on any level. I'm assuming you don't want your muscle mass?

That is horrible. That would be like not eating anything on days you don't workout.

i would take a little bit healthier route! I also have a large goal, but I set mine at 2lbs per week, which a lot of people still say that is not healthy. However, I am losing about 2-3 per week right now. I burn 500 calories every day working out to lose a pound and I eat 500 less calories based on BMR to lose another, and so far it has been working.

In the long run it is very unhealthy - if all you want to do is lose weight, it might work but that is all you will be doing losing the weight. You need to feed your body accordingly for it to function accordingly - before you know it you might find yourself with out energy and the possibility of binges are very high.

So does that mean, at 320 pounds, that my safe weight loss is actually 3 pounds a week, not 1.5? If that's true I might adjust my goals.

Op thanks for reaching out for advice. Eat my friend :) Eat healthy and work out and you will lose weight. But I think working out every calorie you eat is not a good idea and can be potentially unhealthy. Maybe eat the reccomended MFP calories and eat some of your calories back if you can but don't work out every calorie you eat. On your work out days you should actually try to eat more.

The only thing I would add is that if you are a fit 320 lbs, near the normal weight range for your height then that may be too aggressive. If you have a lot of body fat then I agree with the 1% rule, but not for those that have a lower BF% or are in the "normal" BF% range.

I don't think it would be healthy for me to lose 1% of my BW/week, as a good portion of that would be lean muscle.

Good god....where do these people come up with these ideas!!!! Yes that is unhealthy. So you can make the decision whether you want to be healthy and fit.....or get skinny, lose weight and develop all kinds of health problems.

    Hey hunn

I'm 5'8" as well and started at about 150. My goal is also 127 (well, 128 but yeah). I just wanted to let you know that with diet and exercise the right way (as in eating at least 1200 cals plus whatever you burn off working out), you will lose weight. It will be easier at first and then get harder. I've been between 137 and 131 for the past 8 weeks, slowly losing about 1lb a week. The last few lbs will take a lot of work because 127 is low for our height, as under 121 is considered underweight.

Honestly, even going from 157 to 140, you will notice a HUGE difference. Why don't you aim to get to 140-145 by 9-10 weeks from now and try to do it the healthy way? Then you can keep working at it and lose the rest during the 9-10 weeks after that!

Feel free to add me if you want advice / support daily from someone who is the same height and who has similar Start weight and goal weights :)

A minimum of 1200 plus what you burn back, preferably your BMR plus what you burn from exercise.

& also I realize that you need the carbs for energy, which is why I saved my cardio for the night time. Guess that doesnt make a difference though -_-
