I don't mean partial section hikes, I mean the full 2200 miles?

Hahah...nope; only the partials. Sorry. Would love to do the whole thing, but don't have time. My college was right along the AT, so I know lots of people who DID do it. Just not me.

I think I might make it my lifelong fitness goal.

People will be all "Check me out, I did a Tough Mudder!" and I could be like "Yeah? Well I walked from Georgie to MAINE beotch!"

You should do it! My best friend did it and I loved living vicariously through him. He had such great stories! The only section I ever hiked was in Tennessee, and it was absolutely lovely. Some of my best memories. In my opinion, no one's story can top the story of someone who hikes the entire AT.

I did 1200 miles in 1989. My knees blew out so I had to stop. My wife, however, kept going. I turned into her support team and followed her up by car. I provided the food deliveries, took care of town stuff, etc. After my knees settled down, I hiked with her when I could. I did end up doing the 100 mile wilderness in Maine with her, and most of the Whites in NH, which was fantastic. We have a goal of doing it again one day (probably after retirement).

I really want to try it at some point! I've hiked most of the NY portion and some in CT. My BF thinks I'm nuts, but it's been a dream of mine to do since I was a teenager!

No, but I read a VERY inspiring book about two women who did it barefoot. Highly recommend the book:

@Jfinnivan - I'm very impressed regardless. The 100 mile wilderness is the scariest part of the whole trail, the fact that you managed it with bad knees is a feat indeed!

I didn't find it scary, only tough on the feet in some parts because of the rocks. Except perhaps when the moose were around. It was rutting season, so we were very vigilent. It was a great stretch, though. Very beautiful.

My husband dreams of doing it one day. I hope he can!

I doubt I would be able to ever do it but love the idea of it :)

You should read Bill Bryson's book on it - very entertaining. He did a chunk, but by no meals all, of it.

Yes - they loved hiking the trail so much that they decided to hike back (northbound). I have not read that yet.
