Making goals....

I am starting fresh as of yesterday! I have my elliptical being delivered today so I am more pumped than ever!! I need help, however, setting my goals. I want to make them reasonable though this time. In the past, I have set them too high, too fast, and just get disappointed after a certain amount of time, and then quit. I am eating healthier, exercises daily, and just overall in a better mind set this time so I want to make it count this time!!! Ready to get my skinny on!!! Any suggestions on what my goals should be? How do you set your goals?
Info. about me:
Height: 5'3
SW: 185 pounds
CW: 183.9 pounds
Total I want to lose: around 50 pounds from SW.

Hi there,
You seem to be pretty much the same as me
I'm 5'3", started at 188lbs, UK size 16, and am aiming for 140lbs as my ultimate goal weight.
I've given myself the realistic goal of being at least under 160lbs by my birthday in August. However, I've also bought a size 12 swimming costume as a motivator, and I'm actually hoping to be wearing it when I go on holiday at the beginning of July regardless of weight- if I can look good in it, I don't care what the scales say!0 -
I love the idea of buying a smaller size in something and trying it on until it fits one day.. that is great!
I make my goals usually by how many pounds per week. Since I'm starting from a fairly unhealthy lifestyle, I'm going for 40 pounds gone by the first week in June... it's about 4lbs/week (19 weeks). I will probably achieve that faster since I know exercising and eating right haven't been happening, but my next goal will probably only be 20 pounds in 20 weeks. It all just depends on how well you know yourself and how you lose.
When you set goals before, how many pounds were you losing per week? Use that as a good indicator of maybe what your goals should be... like maybe you lost 1 per week most weeks. Then, give yourself 20 weeks to lose 20 pounds - you're going to have good and bad weeks but if your average was 1 a week, you should just about make your goal!0 -

Before, I just hardly ate and went walking/jogging every day. It wasn't healthy at all. I have had an eating disorder before too and I want to steer clear of that this time and just do it right, no matter how long it may take. I have never paid attention to how much I lose per week because with the eating disorder, I weighed myself every day. I know our weight will fluctuate each day so it does no good to do that. I have since then stopped weighing every day and am weighing maybe once or twice a week. Starting yesterday I am going to weigh-in each Sunday and log my measurements every 2 weeks I think. I am not sure how much my weight loss goal per week should be. I know I will be doing the elliptical we just bought about 6 days per week along with the 30 Day Shred. I started the 30DS a few weeks ago but have been so off and on with it I just want to start over fresh. I am thinking, since I will be working out so much (plus walking a few days a week this spring and summer) and eating SO much better, maybe I should shoot for 1.5-2 pounds per week? Also, I have never been good at setting one goal, then when it is reached setting another, and so on. I have always wanted fast and quick results, then get bummed out when it doesn't happen over night and give up.0 -
I am pretty much the same as you as well. Height 5' 4", SW 185, GW 165. I set myself a goal of 20 lbs to lose by June. I found that if I set a reasonable goal for myself, I wouldn't feel stressed out as I got closer to it and I haven't lost what I should be by then. I have mine set to work out 5 days/week for 30 min each time. I have 3 kids under 7, so this is about as much as I can do when they are with me. I have an eliptical and treadmill as well, but I have been focusing on using my Wii Fit Plus and the Biggest Loser Challenge for Wii. I have a good time doing it and it really works my core areas. So, just be sure that you set your goals reasoable and come up with a exercise routine that you can stick with every week. I find that if I choose the days that I am going to work out, it helps me stick with it. Good luck and add me as a friend if you like!!0

I'm pretty new here and struggling with goals as well. I want to be realistic and REALLY wish I would have started with photo's like I have been looking at today. They are very inspiring for me. I have decided to skip the scale for a few weeks and just take measurements, but that photo is being taken when I get home tonight. I wish you well!0

I need to take a before picture too, maybe tomorrow I am going to send you a friend request, if you don't mind. This way we can help each other along the way0 -
Hi Angela.
You can do it! :-) You have the determination.
One step at a time. I am 5'4 and used to be 199. A great way to exercise is to have fun with exercising. Maybe listen to music while you workout. The only exercise that I found that I stick to is Zumba.Weight lifting, walking, or going to the gym bored me to death. LoL. I also have a "cheat day" once a week. If I don't have a "cheat day" I cheat all the time. Plus I found it helps jumpstart my diet for the coming week. If you continually follow the same amount of calories all the time you hit a plateau. That is what my dr. told me a while back.
Good luck and if you need support I am definitely here for you. :-)0
