I am having a really frustrating day at work and just recognized that I'm totally overeating.

Any tips on how to manage the urge to stuff my face because I'm pissed over something I have no control over?

  • You have to disassociate the feeling of relief/pleasure with eating. There are chemical reactions that are going on in your brain whenever you take a bite of a favored snack food it releases a "feel good" sensation. I personally have always taken out any frustration from the day in the gym; however, stress balls really work for me. Finding another vice is not preferred but finding anything to distract you from the sensation to eat is key.

If you can't help snacking during the day, prepare a few snack foods like blueberries, strawberries, and apple slices to grub on.

    Hope this helps!

I'm not a crazy water pusher, and I honestly stay hydrated in other ways most of the time, but try drinking water. It helps me.

I also have a tendancy to reach for the junk when my working day is getting to me. I find that just making sure I only have dried fruit or other low fat stuff like that in my drawer means I have no choice about reaching for the chocolate.

And then I go home and beat the crap out of a virtual person on my Wii Boxing games! That is a great stress buster.

I keep healthy snacks at work so that I make better choices when driven to that point ... prepackaged fresh fruit snacks, greek yogurt, cottage cheese and fiber one bars are my favorites. Sometimes you just need chocolate to keep from stabbing someone with a letter opener - the fiber one 90 calorie chocolate brownie is a fair substitute.

Crystal Light... Or some other "sweet" tasting drink that is low to no calories. It will release the feel good hormones without releasing your waistline.

I personally, glare and yell at my computer lol. And box at home. Just don't hit your co-workers, you can get fired and sued for that!

Having crunchy fruits and veggies around to munch on helps. Apples and carrots are good ones. Also realize that when it comes right down to it is a choice so having good, healthy choices around and no junk food helps you make the right choices. I also do a lot of self talk. While walking to the vending machine I'm asking if this is what I really want to do...is it worth a moment of "relief' to feel terrible later? Also I ask what is REALLY going on...why am I feeling so stressed. Instead of just feeling the emotions around whatever is going on I figure out the why.

It's not easy but it's worth it.

Thank you all very much! Yesterday must've been a full moon because everything seemed to go wrong. I just called in sick today and have to be cautious not to return tomorrow with a tan ;-).

I will keep the healthy snacks on hand and be sure I go to the gym afterwards to release the frustration .
